So apparently I-80 is going to be rebuilt in the whole area. Opinions?

Good it was needed at least 30 years ago last time I was on it

They're doing it in stages, but I have no idea when or if it'll ever be 3 lanes through the town. It needs to connect sections from the I-80/380 merge through to Exit 4 in NJ... good luck convincing the EPA on that one.

Looks like they are going to address the entrance ramps particularly the weave between Main Street and US 209 that has only 1000 feet of separation.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

I take it they won't touch the last exit heading east towards New Jersey? I haven't been on that part of I-80 since maybe the late 2000s. I remember how narrow some of the road was even then.

Well it's gotta be 2 lanes crossing the Delaware for the near term so that'll limit things.

There are long-term plans to widen it between 380 and the Columbia-Portland Interchange. I wonder how the hell they're going to rebuild that clusterfuck anyway.

I have no clue how they're ever going to rebuild in NJ. PA can get it up to the bridge, you might in 20 years have a snowball's chance of getting a 6-lane bridge put in, but that snowball's gonna melt before you can widen in NJ. It's gonna be easier to pull an I-78 and do a new alignment south of Stroudsburg and tying in at I-380.

I-480 to Bangor, anyone?

I did some fantasy musing scribbling on USGS topo map photocopies of the area a while back (late 1990s/early 2000s) and yes, upgrading I-80 to six lanes would be a major undertaking whatever way one goes there.  A six-lane ticket turnpike bypass (straight west from US 46/NJ 94 to the PA 33 corridor and back to present-day I-80)?  Start thinking about European-style tunneling and viaduct bridging.

A wild thought that I just had, and it is probably a complete non-starter, but how possible would it be to rebuild I-80 through the 'Gap' as three lanes westbound on the New Jersey side and three lanes eastbound on the Pennsylvania side?

I think the PA side is protected. I don't see anything happening there with PA 611.
