Any U.S. shield with specs more recent than 1961 are ugly.

(This one seems to be a standard 3dus shield in New Jersey)

The Garden State Parkway has plenty of bad looking US route shields:

The thing about that US 60 photo that I posted isn't necessarily the shield shape, which is commonly seen around Kentucky these days (the US 23 sign posted upthread is a good example) but the garishly large numbers.

As a matter of fact, I do own the road.

That lead-off US-322 sign IS horrible (and variants can be found sporadically around the state).  Though a pic or 2 down, the one with two 322 shields overhead doesn't look all that bad.
I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

That looks suspiciously like a Rhode Island sign.

That it is. This is on the ramp to US 1 from the T.F. Green Airport connector road from I-95.

Not "Ugly" per se, must slightly misproportioned

Some very ugly shields. Do the contractors that make these signs even care?

Now if you want a really ugly sign, look no further than LA1 in Shreveport (since replaced)

The US 71 shield isn't bad, but that LA 1 shield is horrific!

is that in Texas?  If so, wow that's very old for Texas.

Georgia has quite a few ugly shields.  Here is one paired with a nice '61 spec state route marker.

that I-84 is quite the rarity - a '57 spec shield in Connecticut.  It happens to be a bit worn.  But it's not ugly at all.

This style is, sadly, rather common in certain areas of south Florida:

And it's hard to badmouth Florida Kodachrome, but I'll make an exception for this one:
