Woah way neat! Those would have been pretty neat to have seen those in person!

that font is one of the heavy influences on Highway Gothic.  Connecticut was using it as early as 1933.

Best I can describe this to you is that our "Outline shields" are CT answer to high visibility button copy shields.  Unlike Button Copy white shields with black legends, the daytime visibility of our numbers isn't reduced by putting the buttons over black numbers.
