Steel rebar is poking out of the piers... Anyone saying they didn't see this coming should be examined  :meh:

That's more than likely IDOT or CDOT chipping away loose concrete, which exposed the rebar. It's pretty common and gets patched when the temperatures are warmer. Just because rebar is showing doesn't mean the bridge is structurally deficient.

Another example of crappy roadwork in Chicago...

It looks more like CDOT's lack of maintenance.  Concrete can also fall off, exposing rebar, rather than being chipped off.

The whole thing is a joke. It's going to take a bridge collapse and people ending up dead for this state to take the roads seriously. Even if that happens it'll likely end up as a band aid approach. Idiots downstate are more concerned about legal pot and being 21 to purchase tobacco rather than the pension system or broken roadways.

PS: All for the legal pot, but take all the tax revenue and put it towards roads.

Time to worry is when the spalled concrete extends beyond the rebar.

When pigs fly.  Anything controversial always gets pitched as having the proceeds go towards "the kids".
Keep right except to pass.  Yes.  You.

I dooubt it's spalling as the missing parts are very linear.  Spalling usually shows in a more random pattern.  Looks like they were prepping it for patches. And no, the pier integrity is not necessarily compromised by what is shown.
When you come to a fork in the road... TAKE IT.

Never trust a politician that uses the phrase "national security," or "we must do it for the kids!"
I'm never wrong, just wildly inaccurate.
