A new month means ... a new bunch of headlines. Here are your headlines about California Highways for August. For a year that seems to drag on and on it is going by seemingly very fast. As always, ready, set, discuss.

Now that I'm not banned from Los Angeles County because of COVID I'll be likely visiting the Old Ridge Route with my mountain bike probably in December.  When I ran from Sandberg to Tumble Inn I noticed that the gate was open, supposedly people were making it through to Castatic.  I highly doubt that Los Padres National Forest wants to put much money into preserving or reopening the Old Ridge Route given they signs saying it isn't maintained in their boundaries.

I might be in the minority on this but I prefer Postmile Paddles.  The Postmile Paddles contain way more information (provided you know how to read them) over a standard Mile Marker System.  I'm not opposed to Mile Markers as a supplement I would just hate to the utility of Postmile Paddles go by the wayside.

I agree that all things considered that one tiny curve on CA 25 isn't all that dangerous in the grand scheme of how twisty that highway is.  It was a waste to build a straightening cut, it was executed terribly, and it is pretty laughable it will take to 2023 to be repaired.  At this point given how much of a fuss it has caused in San Benito County it should've been abandoned and the old highway made permanent again.

Good to know others are tracking down old highway alignments in the northern counties but I can swear that Lincoln Highway alignment has been posted on Facebook before?

Interesting that the rail portion of the High Desert Corridor is being looked at for near-term development now that the freeway portion has been shelved -- particularly with the privately funded semi-high-speed Victorville-Vegas passenger rail service, much of which will utilize the I-15 median, gaining traction in terms of timely deployment.  On the surface it looks like the rail HDC will allow that service to extend into L.A. County, where it would intersect Metrolink at Palmdale, providing all-rail service (with a transfer of modes in Palmdale) between central L.A. and Las Vegas -- with the HDC portion being subsidized via its public funding sources.  It'll be intriguing to see how all this shakes out -- and whether any "grease" was applied by the backers of the Victorville-Vegas service to "front-burner" the HDC's rail portion in order to increase their potential ridership.  Since originally that rail was slated to occupy the median of the now-dropped freeway, will the HDC ROW be reduced to only accommodate the rail portion, or will it still take in the full width required for the entire project (since technically the freeway portion was only indefinitely postponed rather than completely eliminated).  How this is handled -- and possibly who deals with the matter on the public side -- may determine how the corridor is initially configured.

Another vote for postmiles. More info in the same sized package. It's interesting that the inquiry refers to actual MUTCD milemarkers as postmiles in the second sentence, just to make it confusing.

CA 67 was always a mess north of Santee. It's a wonder the road isn't a bigger deathtrap than it is in practice.

Last month we drove segments of the Lincoln Highway in the Donner Pass area.  Very scenic, though we got "off the path" in a couple of places where the route crosses over I-80.  We were just following posted signs; I did not have a map.

The completion of the San Miguel project means that the only left-hand entrances on 101 between the Bay Area and LA are in Salinas, Arroyo Grande, Montecito, and interchanges with the 405 and 170.
