Lets play a game.  This game is called "find the quickest route" between two destinations.  The twist is that there will be restrictions on routes, states, counties, towns etc. that you cannot use in determining the quickest route between the two destinations.

First one is find the quickest route between Denver and San Diego.  You may not use I-70 or I-15 to get to San Diego.

Seriously, though...  This game is inherently flawed, because who's to say how long a particular route takes?  Google Maps will vary based on what time you query it.  And an off-Interstate route might show fastest, but you're realistically able to speed more on the Interstate than on that route.

This is a trick question. What you do is start in San Diego and use I-15 and I-70 to go to Denver. :sombrero:

To play it a bit more honestly, using Google Maps and the starting points provided by the city names alone, I get 18:54 for I-8 to I-10 to I-25, including the cut off of NM-26. Taking I-8 to I-10 to I-17 to I-40 to I-25, including the AZ-347 cut-off, is a bit faster at 18:34. Taking I-8 to AZ-85 to AZ-303 to I-17 to US-160 and US-285 is a bit faster still at 17:58. Random clicks here and there suggest that this last routing is about the best you can do (except for the Forbidden Routing, which, for comparison purposes, clocks in at 16:01).

So I looked it up using the "Do not use highways" feature, which I think might be a good game to play. At 12:19 MDT today, Friday, October 5, the quickest route NOT using highways is 22:23.

Main Routes: US 85, US 285, US 160, US 550, NM 516, NM 371, US 491, NM 134, AZ 264, BIA 15, AZ 87, AZ 260, AZ 89A, AZ 89, AZ 71, US 60, AZ 72, AZ 95, US 95, CA 78 into SD Metro.

I-5, I-84, I-86, I-15

Due to the I-15/I-90 multiplex in and around Butte I would recommend MT 41 to MT 2 instead.

Phoenix to Salt Lake City.

Cannot use I-15 or US 89.

Edit: Round 2: You can use any road you want, but you cannot cross directly from Arizona to Utah.

I-17 to I-40 to US 191 to US 40 to I-80.

For round 2, simply US 60 to US 93 to I-80. US 93 has a concurrency with I-15.
