Title: Cheesy/Downright awful local ads
Post by: CapeCodder on October 28, 2018, 01:09:39 PM
Every place has these. When I lived in St. Louis we had some outright horrendous ads.

#1 Midwest Hemorrhoid Treatment Center: The ads are cheesy as hell ("Midwest Hemorrhoid Treatment Center, don't suffer in silence!")

#2 Assorted car dealerships. There's one with assorted "western" noises like bullwhips and cowboy sounds. There's also one for a dealership called Johnny Londoff Chevrolet. The ads have been the same for years. You'd think by owning the building and lot he would have more money to make better ads? Dave Sinclair was just as bad. He would have "editorial" style ads.

#3 Mattress Giant. Need I say anything else?

#4 The Pasta House Company. From what I've heard, they're on their way out.

Chicagoland has a fair number, but this one takes the tamale.

Eagleman from Eagle Auto Insurance.  He (yes, he) was an egg laying eagle used in the ads.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Insurance

Bruce Boudreau did this ad when he was the Capitals' coach:

Now that they've won the Stanley Cup, there's a new ad for a truck starring current goalie Braden Holtby that has a similar theme; I think most of us assume it's a tribute to Boudreau's ad. I can't find it online, though, perhaps because it's currently on TV.

The following from the early 1980s is a legendary DC-area ad. It originally aired in 1983 after the Redskins won Super Bowl XVII. The following season, they went back to the Super Bowl but lost, and if you listen closely you can hear the somewhat sloppy editing job where they removed the words "World Champion."

This one aired for years (without the captions). The singer is Nils Lofgren of E Street Band fame. He even put this recording, minus the two kids at the end, on his boxed set. If you lived around here in the late 1970s/early 1980s, you found this ad to be somewhat ubiquitous on the TV. I have a feeling the PC Police would probably object to the two kids today.

Finally, the following from Baltimore is obviously fake. Warning, lots of profanities–be careful where you decide to watch this. It's a classic, though.

There are so many cheesy Eastern Motors ads that I couldn't decide among them. I think the cheesiest was this one starring Ovechkin, which was so bad it never aired as a commercial (it did air on TV, just not as a commercial). I like it when he sounds out "SUVs" as a word:

The "More Dams, No Trains"  ads around Fresno are an ever present reminder that people around here hate the current Governor and think there is some great untapped source of water in the Sierras.

You will always see a "NO LINE" sign on someone's front yard or by the highway near where a power line is due to go up.

My question - why post these signs.  What makes these schmucks think I care about this?

Almost any used car ad is usually pretty bad. Many locally-made new car ads are equally bad.

First, we have Airport Plaza Jewelers in Buffalo:

Then you have the Fuccillo chain of auto dealerships:

Foggs Automotive near Albany is a perennial offender. Their radio commercials often have Bush, Clinton, and Trump impersonators (sadly, I can't find any of those), but I did find some equally cheesy TV ads:

WBZ Radio has increasingly had on-air personalities do ads for several local businesses, typically with the "I'm a customer, you should be one too."  angle.  This sort of thing rankles me, because it immediately raises the question "OK, what sort of break are you getting for promoting this service on the radio?"

But the latest cheesy ad I've heard is for the pending public stock offering from High Times.  The ad itself, which lasts about 20 seconds, isn't that bad.  But the 45 second disclaimer that follows it is downright hilarious.  For one thing, it starts with the warning "Do not purchase this stock unless you can afford to lose your entire investment."

It seems that used car dealers have a common theme of having annoying as hell TV ads. In Madison, WI, Mad City Mitsubishi (formerly Mad City Auto before they became a Mitsubishi dealer) takes the cake. "It's a crime to pay more than a dime." "It's Mad City Mitsubishi's famous Nickle Pickle sale!" Honestly, the ads were worse before they became a Mitsubishi dealer. And the thing about these ads and their business model, is you know they're targeting people who are lower income and/or have poor credit in an almost predatory fashion.

Bob's Discount Furniture started out as one store in Newington, CT in 1990. It was up by Kitt's Lane off the Berlin Turnpike (US 5/CT 15). The current store is a mile and change south, on the southbound side. The woman in most ads is Kathy. I don't think she was with him on a personal level. I think their current base is somewhere in Manchester, CT, visible to the right from I-84 East, maybe a mile before you reach the Vernon town line.

A long running radio series here which gets on my last nerve is for Kia of East Hartford, CT. Their ads always feature a Trump impersonator. WDRC-FM 102.9 of Hartford (102.9 The Whale - Hartford's Classic Rock) plays those ads incessantly!  :banghead:

Pieroway's commercials in western MA were pretty horrible...and then he started trying to come up with catch phrases:  "Hey, It's Your Money".  Ugh.

There was also a car dealership in Duluth, MN/Superior, WI called something luke Englebrecht or Egglebrecht (?) where a plodding spokesman said, "...where you, the customer, are number one."  My father-in-law was in a band and he saw the guy in the crowd at a concert.  He said the venue's name and repeated the infamous commercial line.  The guy left after the crowd snickered.

Over the past two years or so in NY, we've had cheesy local ads from James Provenzano for his car dealerships.  He has dealerships across NY, and it seems like he's trying to be the next Billy Fuccillo.  I first heard him on Radio 95.1 out of Rochester.  When I first mentioned the cheesy ads to my friend who lives in Oneida, he said that he'd heard the ads on radio stations near him.

James is a "dealer for the people", and I noticed that "for the people" had a registered trademark symbol.  After a bit of Googling, I found other dealers using that phrase, and it turns out that it's registered to what looks like an ad agency in Florida.  I'm guessing it's an ad package that dealers can buy and use.

The best (or worst) part is how James delivers the ads.  Here's a long version of one of his ads:

Obviously, there's just the audio on the radio.

The cheesiest one was for Pokémon Go.  From my Facebook chat history when it came out:
QuoteHe caught a Jigglypuff at his dealership and said there were a bunch of other Pokémon there too.  He even has a $5 down promotion, which he promoted as "driving away for the cost of 100 Pokéballs".  I was LOLing through the whole thing!

They're so cheesy that my friend and I have started to look forward to the beginning of each month to see what his ad will be for the month.  I was a bit disappointed this May since he reused his "Yes You May" ad from last year.

Growing up in Chicago, my vote would go to those ubiquitous Empire commercials, when it was completely local and the number was just 588-2300, with the (800) part not yet in place.

I'm altogether very glad they didn't change the jingle when they added the (800), though.  I like how they snuck the (800) in within later commercials.

And kudos for @Brandon for posting the all-time worst cringefest I've ever seen in the very first reply to the OP lmao

Empire Carpet has locations everywhere now. We get the same stupid commercials in New York. I honestly didn't realize it was a Chicago company. I first thought the "Empire" name was a reference to New York, which was the only place I have ever seen commercials until recently.

The first one there is JUST like the radio ads for Foggs, all the way down to the voices, music, and the $350/week $30,000/credit thing.

$350/week?  Talk about predatory.

Well, if people have no credit, that's where predatory lenders come in.
We get ads for these types of "no credit/bad credit, no problem" places in Eastern Massachusetts from time to time - the last being JD Byrider (until the AG's Office slapped them with a lawsuit for defective cars and predatory practices).  But I've NEVER heard of a $350 per week car payment from one of these firms before.

I hear the ads for Fogg's all the time with the "bring home 350 a week, get 30,000 in credit", but my assumption has always been that you can get up to $30,000 in credit if you show that you have a $350/week in take home pay.  I don't know what portion of that $350/week they expect will become your car payment.  It is certainly a failure of math education if someone who takes home $350/week believes it's appropriate to borrow $30,000 to buy a used car.  I don't know if that "offer" is in conjunction with their "it's a crime to pay more than a dime" down payment program.  Talk about trying to get people into worse financial trouble than they're probably already in...

Speaking of annoying ads that originated in Chicago, I believe Luna originated there too, although I guess their ads no longer qualify as "local" for this thread. The ad a few years ago with the geek who sang "Free Floorin'" and his hideous wife was probably their most cringeworthy ad, IMO.

(To be fair, though, I'd probably rather see a Luna ad or any of the ads in this thread over all the negative campaign ads that have taken over our airwaves. For the past week or two, I basically mute the TV when they go to commercial and unmute it when the ad break ends.)

Local for Chicago as well, "Glenn Learner is the lawyer for you, call 222-2222"

What's funny is as the years went on, his commercials added more CGI and I saw his billboards is such odd places (Like US-30 in Big Rock IL, about 50 miles west of Chicago)

And given that NY is the Empire State, it would've been an obvious reason for your thinking. The spirit of Lynn Hauldren (the local actor who portrayed the company's mascot) is still there, as the ads evolved from sketches of him bursting into a woman's home and plopping down new carpet to CGIs of multiple brown-haired, mustachioed men with the glasses and blue uniforms scattered all over another house and doing different tasks at the same time.

The jingle/number for Luna has been changed to "877-241-LUNA", IIRC. The most annoying part is the sound of the phone dialing before the LUNA is sung. However, I don't mind that as much as Empire.

In Charleston there are several cheesy lawyers with commercials. You flip on the TV any time between 9-6 on a weekday and you usually see these 3-4 in a commercial set on the OTA stations.

George Sink "George Sink on the line, call 999-9999,"  Akim Anastopoulo (the guy from the "Eye for an Eye"  TV show), Shelly Leeke, Bill Green, John Hawkins. All have cheesy catch phases and mostly deal with folks who have been injured in accidents (which is much of the audience on daytime OTA TV).

There are also some bad ones you often see on the local news about this company that sells hearing aids "that are the size of a pencil eraser!"

But the most memorable one is probably Gerald's Tires. They are an institution here. They have had about 4 ads in a 30 year period. All of them still play. He has one that still plays which is from about 1993 or 1994. It shows a NationsBank ATM (that chain merged with Bank of America in 1998!), and in the commercial they were working on a Toyota Cressida (last model year was 1992).

Here it is: https://youtu.be/5QCuixgn3aQ

Here is one of George Sink's: https://youtu.be/uDzq-6Xk_Ec

I remember Empire commercials from the 80s and 90s and can still picture the man and hear the jingle–but did Luna have a catchy jingle for their phone number before the 773 area code came into existence?

Lynn Hauldren. Originally just the ad representative, became the face of Empire when he & the owner couldn't find a suitable actor.  He lives on as an animated character in current advertising.

There's a radio ad for a car dealer in the Mohawk Valley that attempts to use a traffic stop as it's theme.  It basically goes like this:
Cop: Are you [dealer owner] at [dealer]?
Motorist: Yes, sir.
Cop: Is that the place with [insert sales pitch 1]?
Motorist: Yes, sir.
Cop: With [sales pitch 2]?
Motorist: Yes, sir.

This goes on and on for a full minute or two.  It's downright painful to listen to.  But when listening to another ad for a local dealer, it got me thinking about how many ads try to make something that sounds like a normal conversation with all the talking points, and end up sounding like anything but because nobody talks that way.  I actually wrote an example (not a real commercial, though I did use bits of the real ones):

Real Life:
Wife (who sounds like a normal woman): I'm going to Foggs.
Husband (who sounds like a normal man): OK.  See you later.

Commercial:
Wife (who sounds like a character from a 1940s detective movie): I'm going to Foggs.  Foggs Automotive.  In Scotia/Glenville.
Husband (who sounds like a 1940s detective from a movie): Is that the place where every vehicle is only one dime down?
Wife: Yep.  And if you bring home $350 a week, you get up to $30,000 in credit!
Husband: And your engine is covered for life!
Wife: Even oil changes, for life!
Husband: And all you need is a dime!
Wife: One. Dime Down.
Husband: So head off to Foggs today!

My least favorite radio ads are the ones that make it sound like the ad is part of the programming.  There was one for a scam company called "Internet Speedway" which was promoting some wok at home bullshit where the ad started with a DJ saying "We'll return to the program in a minute..." or some such bullshit, and then he'd go into the spiel.

They seem to have a large number of billboards in a state where their product is actually illegal to use.  (That being fireworks and Illinois - doesn't stop the locals from going to Indiana to procure them every 4th of July.)

The fireworks places in New Hampshire, where the product is legal, do a considerable amount of billboard advertising in Massachusetts, where the product is illegal.

A regional chain of furniture stores based in Oklahoma, Furniture Factory Outlet (now known as FFO Home) featured Edna and Earl.

Another ad featured Earl saying "Furniture Factory Omelet", or "Funnier Factory Outlet".

Earl was Harlan Jordan. from Kaufman, Texas. His voice was heard on Wolf Brand Chili commercials "Neighbor, how long has it been since you had a big, thick, steaming bowl of Wolf Brand Chili? Well, that's too long!"

MN (illegal) and WI (legal) have a similar symbiotic relationship. I don't think I've seen many billboards in MN advertising WI fireworks shops, but I have heard radio ads for such.

I've heard a radio ad here in CT for a fireworks place in West Chesterfield, NH. It's just over the Connecticut River from Brattleboro, VT, along NH Route 9. I think it's called Area 51. I remember seeing a UFO looking fixture by its entrance while walking around there once. Funny to heard the ad distinctly mention "Take VERMONT Exit 3 and head east".

I have also seen ads for Phantom Fireworks in PA, along the interstates in NJ and NY near the border. One in particular was along I-80 West in NJ near Delaware Water Gap, PA.

I'd give an honorable mention to Bob's Discount Furniture...but he's not just Connecticut anymore. I think he's in like 12 or 13 states now, including ME, NY and IL.

Yeah Bob's is now as far west as CA and as far south as VA.

I think I stopped there once.  I was driving up US 209 taking the back way from Lancaster, PA to the Lake George area, and I stopped at a place called Odd Lots in East Stroudsburg just after getting off PA 33.  They had quite the supply of fireworks, including bottle rockets, which you can't get in NH.  Looks like the fireworks store is in a separate building now.

I can't stand this Capital One commercial that's been on both YouTube and streaming TV services for a while now.  It's the one that shows Taylor Swift choosing what to wear for the day, and all she has in the closet are cardigans.  Then the spokesman says of choosing to bank with Capital One:  "Is it really a decision?"

Yes, Capital One, actually it is.  There are plenty of banks out there, so here's how you sound to my ears:  If you don't bank with Capital One, you're basically an idiot.  Gee, thanks for being so condescending.  Someone thought that would be a good marketing strategy, huh?  No thanks.

The grocery store chain HyVee has some annoying ads running for about the last year. They've remade the 80's pop hit "Our House, in the Middle of the Street" into a jingle for their ads. It's so annoying hearing that jingle, and then to hear the actual song play half a dozen times throughout the day over the PA at work.

There was a furniture store jingle, "You've got an uncle in the furniture business, Joshua Doore."

Not a local ad, but one I thought never made any sense.  One of the chain office supply stores used, "Takin' Care of Business".  They neglected to note that the end of the chorus is "workin' overtime" - something I'm sure they didn't really want to associate with shopping at their stores.

I like to play the grammar police, but I'm not offended by CFA's ads.  I have no problem with words that are very obviously and intentionally spelled wrong for a reason (in this case, the reason being that they're written by cows).

The more concerning thing to me about CFA's "EAT MOR CHIKIN" posters (and just their posters, not going to get into their politics) is that they seem really out of step with the rest of their business. Their store in East Norman feels a lot like I'm in the kitchen of a bland suburban mom who cares very much about keeping up appearances, who has invited me over to express disdain for the fact that her daughter might not make the cheerleading squad this year–I half-expect to see a "Live, Laugh, Love" plaque on the wall somewhere. The "My Pleasure" routine definitely enhances the Stepford vibe of the whole place. And their more recent TV ads feature plucky music over people purporting to be CFA employees discussing their product while sitting on those too-high stools that people with more marketing degrees than sense think people like to sit in.

In comparison, the "EAT MOR CHIKIN" stuff feels like a vestigal remnant of a time when CFA was just that weird chicken place you could only go to as a part of a trip to the mall, before they had a drive thru or a lobby to decorate.

There's a furniture store chain based in Michigan that uses "The Stars and Stripes Forever" as background music in their ads, starting about a month before Memorial Day continuing through Halloween every year.  I like to consider myself patriotic, but hearing it 6-8 times per hour all day on the TV gets a little (a lot) annoying after awhile.

I remember back in the 80's and 90's when there was a grocery store chain in Flint and the Tri-Cities (I don't think Midland had one though) called Kessel. The owner did his own commercials and would toss items across the store lol. Dumb ad and then he'd be like Save at Kessel this week, why? Because we're with you.

The whole chain was developed to get rid of the union that Kroger had and the stores were bought back by Kroger in the late 90's.

There was a car dealership in Longwood, Florida that would smash the window of one of his cars in his TV ads.

Then a former Van dealer in Winter Park, before the owner ran for public office, used to jump up and down on his vans and scream during the commercial. Tropic Traveler Vans owned by Artie Grindle was that now defunct dealer.

He started in Las Vegas, then slithered into Phoenix about 20 years ago.  The firm is now Lerner and Rowe.  I didn't know he/they were in Chicago as well.

anyone who's listened to denver-area radio growing up:

'now you have a friend in the diamond business. The Shane Company. just off arapahoe road on emporia street, one half mile east of i-25'.

somehow i always felt more comfortable knowing i had a friend in the diamond business.

Twin Cities had their own version burned into our brains.

"Now you have a friend in the diamond business, the Shane Company. in Minnetonka at 394 and Hopkins Crossroads, and in Woodbury at I-94 and Radio Drive. Open weekdays til 8, Saturday and Sunday til 5. Online at shaneco dot com."

Others I remember:

"Sonju Two Harbors. Where the cars are."

"Go! Go now to Kia of (city)" in an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression
What was the car dealer, though?  Eggebrecht?  "Where you the customer are number one."

I knew someone in a band that played in a bar where he showed up.  So, they said between songs, "Welcome to Sparky's, where you the customer are number one."  They discovered he didn't like being made fun of. :D

I remember those Schwartzenegger ads in Orlando along with Bill Clinton and later Obama.

I also remember Sonny King Buick- GMC in Orlando had an Andy Rooney impersonator back in the 90s who even had me fooled right to the " I like that."   In fact at the time I watched it, I never knew of the real Andy Rooney. So when my dad watched 60 minutes back then and saw Rooney on their with his catchphrase, I thought he was the car announcer until my dad told me that the guy in the commercial was an imposter of him on 60 Minutes.

Here in the Maritimes back in the '70s our US TV stations came out of Bangor, Maine and one local program on WVII was 'Dick Stacey's Country Jamboree' along with some real cheesy locally produced commercials.

Dick Stacey owned some local gas stations around the time stations were switching to self-serve.....but Stacey's commercials were 'If your hands smell — we pump the gas!'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COmDN6BVIQE

He also did a commercial for 'Stacey's Plaza Motel' aimed at Canadians...taking Canadian $$ at par. The Jamboree had quite the following here and many Canadians would head down to Bangor to attend along with a weekend shopping trip!

There used to be a commercial on WNEW FM in NY back in the late eighties that had a man say " I love you."   He then came out with a jingle sung by some ladies singing "Uncle Steve he loves you"  with Uncle Steve in the background saying he loves his customers.

The problem was his accent where you couldn't figure out if his store is in Canarsie or on Canal Street. However I liked his commercials as though cheesy they were entertaining.

BTW I do not hold his accent against him nor think it's funny.  I know he tries and can't help his mispronunciations of common words and I welcome him being of service to us in industry.

Those ads were in San Francisco too on KCBS Radio and KGO-AM! Apparently Shane Company had ads in Minneapolis too besides San Francisco and Denver.

In the San Francisco Shane Co edition the locations were in San Mateo, Cupertino, Walnut Creek.

I'm unable to find an example online, but if you've ever driven through central Iowa and listened to local radio, you're guaranteed to catch at least one Capital City Motor Company commercial on Des Moines stations. "ApprovedByJoe.com, ApprovedByJoe.com, www dot Approved By Joe dot com!"

Annoying, annoying, annoying. I subscribe to satellite radio for that reason.

Any ad that gives the phone number or web address more than three times is fair game for changing the channel.

"Call today! 444-8111!  444-8111!  Call now!  444-8111!  Operators are standing by!  That's 444-8111!  444-8111!  Call NOW!!!  444-8111!"

I searched all over the net for video evidence of this one, but was unable to come up with anything.

Back in the late 1970s / early 1980s there was a series of ads that ran on local TV in the Jacksonville FL area for a company called (if I remember correctly) Southern Brick and Stone.

Their spokesperson was a fellow named Dolph, with a crew cut and Bermuda shorts with a telephone handset connected to his belt with a cord.  His schtick was frenetically yelling into the camera about how you needed his products and "Call me today at 555 - 9 OHHHH 92 (paraphrasing the phone number, but there was an "oh" in it), which waving the phone handset in a huge circle during the exaggerated OHHHH.

I later found out that he was Dolph Agloff who was the actual owner of the business.

By chance is there anybody who lived in the area during that time that remembers those cheesy ads?

How times change that by now it sounds funny to me to hear a phone number without an area code first.

Destination Kia's ads around here used to be fairly normal (aside from including their pets and kids for whatever reason).  Then the pandemic hit and they went animated - and never went back.  Before:

Those don't need to be searched on YT by me, not a day goes by that he, his son, and their sledgehammers parade around and almost get run over by truckers.  And that awful laugh at the end of one of them...

This guy was the original (now some woman does it), he busts windows and screams YEE-HAA!! for 2 places that sell surplus building materials.  As many times as the ad airs, I'm surprised they have any windows left  ;-) :-D
