Title: Longest distance between I-X0 / I-X5 crossings
Post by: webny99 on April 03, 2022, 12:00:13 PM
The below quote from another thread got me thinking: what is the longest distance that you can travel on a single interstate between I-X0 / I-X5 crossings?

I-90 has an absurd 734 miles between I-75 in Toledo, OH and I-95 outside Boston, MA, however it is overlapped with I-80 for the first part of that, so it's 656 miles without an I-X0 / I-X5 crossing starting where it splits from I-80.

That's probably the answer for an I-X0 / I-X5 route, but what about any interstate? I-94 goes 834 miles from I-90 in Billings, MT to I-35 in the Twin Cities. What other examples can you think of?

When you look at how much narrower the country is in the South than the Northeast it's really pretty absurd that Georgia has three I-X5's while meanwhile, I-90 goes nearly 750 miles (!!!) from Toledo, OH to Boston without crossing an I-X5.

How about I-90 between I-25 in Buffalo, Wyoming to I-35 in Albert Lea, Minnesota at 721 miles.

I-10 goes 718 miles between I-25 at Las Cruces, NM and I-15 at Ontario, CA without intersecting another 5 or 0.

Think about how insane it is that I-90 in OH/PA/NY/MA is still longer than that between I-X5 crossings.

I-5/I-80 to I-5/I-90 is around 800 miles.

Related topic for this thread, how about the longest distance between its final x0 or x5 interchange and its terminus? Here's a few 350+ miles I can think of:

I-70 - 464 miles between I-75 and eastern terminus
I-75 - 435 miles between I-10 and southern terminus
I-75 - 412 miles between I-80/90 and northern terminus
I-29 - 387 miles between I-90 and northern terminus
I-95 - 365 miles between I-90 and northern terminus
Future I-69/I-69E - 355 miles between I-10 and southern terminus
I-95 - 351 miles between I-10 and southern terminus

I-95 - 517 miles between I-40 at Benson, NC and I-80 at Teaneck, NJ. Probably the longest distance between two x0s east of the Sierras/Cascades.

It touches I-85 between those points, though.

Not in this multiverse...(your popcorn is appropriate)

About 554 miles between I-80/I-95 in Teaneck, NJ and I-80/I-75 in Rossford, OH.

The OP says it still disqualifies it, giving the example of the I-80/I-90 overlap.

It would count as 517 miles if looking just at intersections with I-X0 routes, but it would be only 365 miles if looking at both I-X0 and I-X5 routes.

Either way is fine; we're going to end up with a different set of answers for both, but obviously distance between I-X5 crossings for even numbers and distance between I-X0 crossings for odd numbers are primarily what's being looked for.

I-10 goes 718 miles between I-25 at Las Cruces, NM and I-15 at Ontario, CA without intersecting another 5 or 0.

And if you don't count the west end of I-20, it goes another 590 miles before crossing I-35 in San Antonio.

Surprisingly, it's "only" 586 miles along I-90 between the western end of the concurrency with I-15 and I-5.

It's also only 266 miles along I-15 between the eastern I-90 end of the concurrency and the Canadian border.

Think about how insane it is that I-90 in OH/PA/NY/MA is still longer than that between I-X5 crossings.

My Fritz-esque renumbering of the Interstate system renumbers I-81 to I-85, which would cut this roughly in half.    (I-85 becomes I-30, I-30 becomes I-32. Highly fictional.)

I always noticed, even as a child, that the distance between I-25 and I-35 is rather large, in general.  I bet the distances between those routes along any east-west Interstate would be pretty high.
