Just a heads-up that the new SR 99 Tunnel should finally be open in October. I hope we can have a few of us locals (and perhaps those from further out) meet up for the opening ceremonies/walkabout/whatever WSDOT is planning, and perhaps a day-after drive through the new toll tunnel.
---
UPDATE: Reserve your free tickets at http://99stepforward.com/ and we'll try to coordinate on the day of. Let's walk the tunnel and viaduct all together as a group, and perhaps go on a tour of town afterwards.
I'll definitely be there!
The funny thing is that I generally find 99 over the Viaduct to be a way more viable way of getting past downtown over I-5, especially southbound. Hopefully the tunnel actually does something to improve traffic flow, granted it was built largely due to quake damage on the Viaduct.

Should be better than today's viaduct. No fewer lanes, but no downtown exits or entrances. Basically a giant bypass road.
Bruce, did WSDOT actually announce any intention to host a gathering? Even if they don't, I think it would be cool to have a get-together and ride thru for any and all interested.

That should help somewhat, those ramps on the Viaduct were worthless anyways. When do demolition on the Viaduct start? Any word if the US 99 BGS will be preserved?

The viaduct removal will start very soon after the tunnel opens, and will take six months. Removal of the Battery Street tunnel, also starting after the tunnel opens, will take about 24 months.
According to Bruce, on the other (linked) thread, there are currently no plans to preserve the US-99 BGS. But, WSDOT is open to preserving it, just not on their dime. The space-age gantries on the north end of the viaduct are being preserved.

Why save the gantry and not the sign? Am I the only one confused about this?

It's a US 99 shield located on one of the ramps:

I remember you posting that picture elsewhere. I live the sign. Seattle needs to try to save that small part of their history...both sign & gantry.

I did a whole series on the Gribblenation Facebook page on the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the previous roadways that led to it being built. There was a little bit of speculation as to when US 99 proper was moved to the Viaduct that was never resolved, it's all on the Northwest Board.
Hell I'd love to have the sign if I was local enough and had the means to remove it. The Viaduct and US 99 had a huge role in the history of local transportation in Seattle, it would be a shame to see the sign go.
If I know WSDOT, they'll make it as difficult as possible to acquire the sign. They have a pretty strict "recycle" policy.
The gantry and the sign are separate installations.

This trick only works outside of peak hours. The viaduct is heavily congested because it carries a big chunk of West Seattle's traffic (which will now be forced to divert onto other streets), so it may work as a shortcut in the future.
As far as I'm aware, WSDOT plans to host a public celebration for the viaduct sometime in October. As soon as I learn of the date or details, I'll post in here.
I have a feeling WSDOT would be willing to sell the sign to someone if they're willing to pay current scrap value for it. Offer $1-200 and see if they're willing to part ways with it.
Wish I could make this thing, but sadly, I cannot. Was out there last month, though, and the tunnel looked nearly done from what I could see.

That would be my expectation. Of course, we'd need to find a way to transport it, pay to have it removed, etc. At least as I understand it.
The tunnel is indeed
very close to opening. Long time coming...
Unless thia is delayed to Thanksgiving weekend, there is probably no way I can attend due to college obligations and cross country season starting soon.

WSDOT has announced that the viaduct will close on January 11, 2019, and the tunnel will open approximately three weeks later.
More time to plan if you want to head up here. Dates are not final, however, and are dependent on weather.

The grand opening for the tunnel will be February 2, 2019. Free sign up here: http://99stepforward.com/
So we should have a non-car (gasp) meetup on that day and a drive-thru shortly afterwards, if we're gonna do this. I plan to do the entire tunnel and viaduct (in that order).
Got my tickets for the event.
Happy to meet on-foot! My plan will be to park at one of the downtown garages (would park on street but...time restrictions) and then walk to wherever the festivities take me (apparently on a shuttle to the north at one point).
I've got my tickets too. Looking forward to it!
I should probably swing up for this- count me in!
I'll just sit back - unfortunately, I won't get a chance at driving the viaduct.
I've put my tickets aside. Now to find the cheapest flights to the West Coast.
This is certainly shaping up to be quite the meetup. At least by PNW standards.

Yeah, our isolated little corner of the country will get our time in the spotlight.
Anyone want to volunteer their cars for a driving tour of some highways, assuming that our out-of-town visitors are staying for the Sunday as well? I don't think we'd have time for anything more than a dinner together after the tunnel/viaduct walk.
I could probably arrange a vehicle.
Anyone else doing the bicycle ride on Sunday?
I'm going to be spending time with various folks so I won't be around for a tour. I could do a brunch before the ribbon cutting.
Due to cost and distance plus inclement weather, we're out.
Why running club. I have a track meet that was just scheduled in Seattle the week after this meet. That may put costs into question considering I'm surviving off of top ramen :bigass:

OK, I really need to get to Washington state again, and this seems like a really good reason to do so. But I need more clarification on what and how we would be meeting.
Some of you mention getting tickets; are those time-sensitive and is there a specific time to shoot for? How will there be a meetup if people have different ticket times? Would the meetup be Saturday only, the day of the walking, or Sunday too, with driving? Hearing the horror stories from Mom, I want to drive in Seattle as little as possible.
I want to be in on this, but second-round vacation requests are due Thanksgiving so I'd like more information.
(And it looks like plane/car will set me back $650 before I set foot in a restaurant or hotel. Yowza.)

http://99stepforward.com/ (http://99stepforward.com/) I plan to be at the ribbon cutting, then catch a shuttle north, check out the old viaduct/tunnel and walk the new tunnel back south. Based on the schedule of events, I'm assuming that any meetup would be limited to seeing each other at the ribbon cutting and a post-event dinner.
I wouldn't be able to attend on Sunday, unless someone decides to drive 40 miles out of the way to pick me up. We should definitely do dinner together, though it would be better to find a place a bit out of downtown where food gets cheaper.
Generally, Sunday driving in Seattle isn't particularly bad. Trying to drive on a weekday during "rush hour" (which bleeds into each other, thanks to the express lanes) is pretty bad if you're not used to city gridlock. A few streets may be closed for the event, construction, or other activities, so just keep Google Maps handy.

Yeah I was only going to be there Saturday. I assume that's the preferred day given the ribbon cutting.
I thought the only thing happening Sunday was the bike ride? Which I am doing, as I previously mentioned.
For the record, my tickets are for 1230-1530. It also mentions meeting at Portal A first for the tunnel walk, then the viaduct walk after that.
I have tickets reserved in the earliest three slots, but I'm going to try and join the media scruff at the ribbon-cutting before joining you guys (one of several groups I want to walk the tunnel with...going to be tough to juggle everything, but this is a challenge worth taking on).

I shall imagine that you probably know, for example, your STB guys a bit better than you know us, so I certainly wouldn't be heartbroken if you joined someone else. But I'm always up for meeting new faces! Even if only for a bite.

I have the same tickets you do, so we should definitely coordinate. I think you may be conflating the existing Broadway tunnel with the new tunnel, because the last activity is to walk the new tunnel 2 miles back to the south end where the ribbon was cut.

I didn't think I was reading that right. As long as someone out there is herding us, I'll be okay.

Absolutely. That's why I'm doing the bike ride on Sunday. I'll look back on my childhood twenty years from now, and be glad I got to use and see the viaduct. There's lots of bridges in the Seattle area that have been demolished that I would love to have seen; glad this won't be one of them! Its time has come, but history is history, and it served its purpose well.
I've just signed up too. Hope we can see each other.
Can't remember how these road meets are usually organized, but I'm looking forward to seeing some new faces myself.
As was mentioned earlier, depending on how many of us end up on the same ticket, a full meetup may be relegated to a dinner afterwards or something. But that's better than nothing!
I'm planning to take a day trip up to Seattle to see you guys. I will take Amtrak Cascades to get up there, and would only be in town for roughly 12pm-6pm. Would that be enough time? Also, I wonder if I should bring my bike along (wished I can do the bike ride Sunday, but it doesn't fit into my schedule).

I think that will be sufficient time to see the sights and make the walks. Perhaps leaving too early for a dinner meetup, but no time has been set just yet; stay tuned!
I have a viaduct/tunnel ticket for 1:30, the earliest available. I do not understand why they are not running shuttles in both directions (website says south to north only).
Airplane ticket and car rental has been arranged.
LET'S DO THIS. (Meaning, if there's going to be an evening meetup of some sort, plans would be good.)

I believe that the shuttles are just the regular parking shuttles that the Downtown Seattle Association runs on the waterfront, which are one-way loops.
It will be much easier to park outside of downtown and take the bus in/around downtown on the day of the event. 50K+ expected, which means things will be packed.
I told my family that I was going down to this event and now they all want to go. So I'll probably be bringing them all down there with me.
EDIT: I had to switch to the 1:30 timeslot in order to get the 10 tickets for everyone in my family since the 12:30 time slot is sold out.
Lil update, I got my tickets a couple days ago. 12:30pm sold out, so I have viaduct/tunnel tickets for 1pm and 1:30pm just in case.
It might be worth organizing a viaduct last ride a few days before the final shutdown on the 11th. There's only two full weekends left.
Best to do it sooner rather than later, and preferably when it's not raining. It's supposed to be partly sunny on Sunday.
I'm going to be in Seattle pretty much all day tomorrow and Friday (driving Lyft, my job). If anyone is in the city and wants to meet up for a drive through or something, definitely send me a message. AARoads PM, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I'm happy to drive through it as much as anyone wants, though the turnaround is all the way down at Diagonal Ave, so it's not a quick drive!
Are we thinking about putting together a Facebook event for this meeting? Or something informal on here? If something on here, we might want to use the chat function the day-of so we can find each other prior to any sort of official meetup, especially if two or more people are on the same schedule (since the itinerary is slightly different for some of us).
If we all want to have a larger meetup, somewhere downtown in the evening might be our best shot. Occidental Park, one of the piers, Victor Steinbrueck Park, Seattle Center, etc. Or since we might all be hungry, we can set up a food location instead (which might make more sense). Since WA has really restrictive rules on alcohol-serving establishments, meeting at a true pub will only work if we're all 21. Doubt that's the case.
If not a restaurant, Occidental Park is great since it's reasonably close to the viaduct/tunnel, 3rd Ave busway, King Street Station, and the Pioneer Square Link station.

I would be up for a brunch/breakfast thing assuming I am back in the area by the morning. But if the ribbon cutting is at 11:30 will there be time to do anything before needing to get to a place to park?

Park first, eat near the ribbon cutting, walk over. Well, I'm not seeing anything that's normally open that early, so maybe not, unless someone volunteers to cook and we all pay him back.
There's been talk of an old sign at the ferry terminal just north of the ribbon cutting, so I'll be up there rather early. Also, my flight gets in around 8:30 and I'm just going across the street to the hotel from there, so if anyone wanted to meet Friday night, that can work. If interested, please respond to one of the below:
* Saturday: Planet Java Diner, 72 S Washington St., let's say 9:30 AM and we can walk down from there around 10:45.
* Friday: Mecca Mediterranean, 16324 Intl Blvd., around 9:00 PM (need to get up there from a scheduled landing of 8:25).
If I don't see votes, I may not be at either place, so please speak up!

Scratch that, I may be able to make the breakfast...or at least walk through during the earliest tunnel slot with everyone. I do have other obligations that will have to be made later in the day, so I might walk the viaduct with another group.
I am out for dinner Friday. Ended up in Seattle today instead of tomorrow. Dinner with family tomorrow.
Definitely will be great to finally meet some new faces! Saturday should be a blast.
We should have a way of coordinating besides this thread. Telegram, Twitter, SMS/MMS...any will do.
Also, if anyone is driving past Marysville to make the breakfast, perhaps you could pick me up? Otherwise I'll be taking a very early bus to be on time.

It is, in fact, Bro-um. Two syllables.

Awesome! What's your sitrep? (As in, what are you doing right now?)
I am currently riding a bus to the north portal to walk the viaduct. Already walked the tunnel.
It was nice putting faces to usernames. It's a bit unfortunate that we had to split up for the actual walk, but I think we'll have plenty of time to chat during our next roadmeet.
My only regret is not being able to snag one of the tote bags with the commemorative logo on them.
Crap, I didn't even know that was a thing. Oh well!
It was indeed great to see everyone, hopefully not for the last time!

Local police officer who was old enough to know the announcer.

Apologies for being late with this post, but at the time you posted, I was at the front of the line at the Seneca Street entrance to the viaduct. I've wanted to do the viaduct first then the tunnel. Ended spending a huge portion of my time at the viaduct (never been on it before) that we only had a little bit of time for the tunnel. It's alright I didn't get to see you guys. Seattle is so beautiful, we'll be back for spring break to check out more of the tunnel.

I did the opposite - I've driven the viaduct a few times and it's just a big concrete monolith, so I only went as far as the interesting NB signs and then made my way back. Spent a lot more time photoing the tunnel.
