Title: US 160 over Wolf Creek Pass
Post by: Max Rockatansky on March 29, 2020, 11:34:49 PM
Back in 2015 and 2016 I drove US Route 160 over Wolf Creek Pass twice.  Wolf Creek Pass is surprisingly a relatively new path of travel having opened during August 1916 as part of the Spanish Trail and Grand Canyon Highway.  When the US Route System was created in 1926 US Route 450 was aligned over Wolf Creek Pass.  In 1934 US Route 160 replaced US 450 over Wolf Creek Pass and it has remained since.  Wolf Creek Pass is arguably more well known for the Song and Album which carry it's name:

I drove it just the other day. There is some construction going on in the area so if anybody happens to be traveling 160 through the area, take that in mind. It shouldn't take them that much longer to get the project done. It's a pretty good road with lots of nice scenery...some "white knuckle" curves too...like the double hairpin turn. :)

I have not been there, but I was well aware of it from stories of my dad having cycled across it in the rain.

If everything works out as planned, though, I'll be crossing North La Veta Pass, Old La Veta Pass, and Cordova Pass before too long.

Whenever I hear Wolf Creek Pass, the first place I think of is where Utah 35 crosses the Great Basin Divide. Then I remember there's a more famous one in Colorado.

I've been across it once as a kid, though it was in the opposite direction than that '48 Peterbilt was going.

A favorite road of mine, in no small part because every time I've traveled it, it was to ski at Wolf Creek, which is also a favorite of mine.  So all of my travels over the pass have been during the winter or at least the ski season.  Some of the rides were in significant snowstorms.  One such ride got me one of my favorite road sign pictures, from the morning of February 8, 2004, on my way up to the ski area from Pagosa Springs:

Sadly, it's been quite a few years since I last made it out there.
