Title: What Section of Interstate NOT in your state have you been on the most?
Post by: Roadgeekteen on May 18, 2021, 03:45:56 PM
For me, either I-95 in New Hampshire or I-84 in Connecticut east of Hartford.

I-90 in IL between South Beloit and the northwest suburbs.

Meh.  Doesn't really work by state for me.  That said, probably the pre-completion I-95 segments in NJ, DE (from I-295) and MD.

Probably I-35 between Oklahoma and I-435, owing to regular trips to Kansas City over the years. I-44 between Oklahoma and exit 72 in Springfield is likely a close second, since that was my exit when I was going to college in MO.

Easily I-90 between the NY/PA line and Cleveland. Second would be I-81 between the NY/PA line and Scranton.

If the QEW in Ontario counted, it would be the easy winner in a blowout over anything else in the US outside of NY. Bet I'm the only US user for whom my most-traveled freeway segment outside my state is in another country!

Having lived in both Kansas City and the Twin Cities for about 60% of my life, the very easy answer is I-35.

Because you don't leave an interstate and get on another at the state border.

Like many in the Mid-South who take trips to the beach, I'd have to say I-10 in Alabama/Florida.

I read the OP differently than others it appears.  I read it as "which interstate that doesn't exist at all in your state have you been on the most", not which stretch outside of your state.

I don't think it changes my answer any, but it would likely affect a lot of the above answers including the OP's (as both of his interstates are also in MA).

That is also how I read it at first - and my answer to that is likely either I-25 or I-40.

If it's an interstate not in my homestate, we're in I-79 in WV from Morgantown to I-77 territory.  I-68 would be close, but I was travelling down I-79 when I-68 was US 48.

If it's simply the segment of Interstate I've been on the most outside Virginia, it's easily I-395 in DC between the 14th Street Bridge and the 12th Street exit. I used that road to commute to work for many years and in non-pandemic times I use it regularly to go to Caps games.

If it's the Interstate that doesn't exist in Virginia that I've been on the most, it's likely I-270 in Maryland. I don't know that for certain, but I'm positive I've been on I-270 more often than unsigned I-595. Less sure about I-895 in Baltimore, which is a road we used on trips to New York when I was a little kid and the Fort McHenry Tunnel wasn't open yet.

(Edited to fix a typo.)

Gotta be a toss up in North Carolina between the I-40/85 overlap and I-95 south of US-64.

If it's a road that doesn't enter Virginia at all... than either I-40 between I-85 and I-87, then I-87 for its entire current length.

I'll answer this one too: I-64 between MO 340 (exit 19B) and MO 141 (exit 22), but that was from when I used to live in the St Louis area. If excluding states that I used to live in too, along with all interstates that go through those states, then it's I-465's southern loop between I-70 and I-74 for me. If excluding 3dis too, then I-65 between I-865 and IN 38.

I-80/90 (Toledo to Sandusky)

From going to Myrtle Beach almost every year to visit my maternal grandmother, mine would be most of I-95 in both Virginia and North Carolina. Between Dumfries (my paternal grandparents' old exit) and Carmel Church (the entry point for those coming in from 301 via 207), I have been on it less frequently, because when we went with our dad he preferred 301 to avoid Northern Virginia's congestion. After my parents split, my mom preferred 95 because she didn't like the endless traffic lights on 301. Additionally, my dad would take 295 around Richmond and Petersburg while my mom would take 95 through them.

My exception for North Carolina is the 13 miles between I-74 and the South Carolina line. Leaving 95 at 74 was always hassle-free for us, especially once the new interchange opened.

If we are talking about a section of Interstate that is outside MI, then I-75 in OH.
If we are talking about an Interstate that is not in MI at all, it could be I-80, various sections.  Or maybe I-465 or I-469 in IN.

Going with the "which stretch outside of your home state" interpretation, mine by far would be the whopping 3.4 miles of I-75 between the Michigan/Ohio line and I-280 in Toledo.

Going with "which interstate that doesn't exist at all in your home state," that would be I-80 in Ohio between I-280 and I-76.  If plans hold, I will be driving it again this coming Saturday.

Out-of-state portion of interstate that enters your state: I-64 east of the KY/WV state line to varying departure points (WV 10, US 60/29th Street, WV 193, I-77). In my youth, it was I-75 south of the state line to Knoxville.

Interstate that does not enter your state: I-77 or I-79 in West Virginia, I-81 in Virginia or Tennessee, or I-26/former I-181 in Tennessee. At one time, I-640 in Tennessee would probably have been the leader.

If limited to Interstates that don't enter CA, my present residence, it would be the western I-84.  Disclaimer: I lived in Portland for 4 1/2 years in the early/mid '90's while attending grad school.  If the OP refers primarily to sections of any Interstate existing outside of CA it would definitely be I-5 in OR and WA, partially travels relating to the aforementioned academic stint and partially business and recreational travels to the Seattle area before, during, and after my Portland residence.

My guess is I-57 between Mount Vernon and Ina, IL.  Either that or between Ina and Whittington.

I used to drive a delivery route in that region, and almost every single day's route would have used that stretch of highway, no matter what other routes I drove that day.

Hard question to answer, because I have lived in multiple states.  If I exclude all interstates that enter into any of those states, the road most travelled is probably I-86 in NY/PA and I-88 in NY.

If I only exclude interstates that do not enter into my current state (Ohio) it is probably I-96 in Michigan, or I-68 in WV/MD.

I-35 between Des Moines, IA, and Minneapolis, MN (visiting relatives in Minnesota).
I-70 between Troy, IL (I-55 junction east of St. Louis) and Columbus, OH (family trips out east).

Beyond Columbus, the route depends on where our destination is:

I've lived in four different states (MA/NY/OH/VT). Not counting the interstate sections of those states, I would probably say I-95 in CT between Bridgeport and New Haven.

If we're doing the more restrictive definition and not counting any interstates that pass through any of those states, then probably either I-696 between I-275 and Telegraph or the I-69/I-94 multiplex in Port Huron.

I'll do it by state (in order from most traveled to least traveled)

LA: I-10 across the Horace Wilkinson Bridge
AR: I-30, I-440, and I-40 from Texarkana to Memphis
TN: I-40 between exits 14 and 18
MS: I-55 (pretty sure most of it)
AL: I-10 through the Mobile tunnel
FL: Probably I-10 through the Panhandle
NC: I-85 between Charlotte and Kannapolis
CA: Probably I-5 between I-8 and downtown San Diego
SC (and GA): I-85

Other states I either can't remember or didn't use an interstate.

Sections of Interstates that don't enter my state (VT): I-495 between MA 2 and MA 123
Sections of Interstates that do enter my state: I-91 between MA 2 WB and the MA/VT line
I've been on the latter much more than the former for reasons that should be obvious  :D

This is a tough one.  I might say I-20 between the Louisiana/Texas state line and Shreveport because I made a lot of trips that way as a kid.  But, it might be a toss up between I-10 from the Louisiana/Texas state line to New Orleans and The Texas/New Mexico state line to Las Cruces.  I have taken several trips to Las Cruces plus the ones with points beyond.  also lots of trips to New Orleans plus points beyond.

Since I moved here to Mason City, the easy answer to this is I-35 in Minnesota up to the split in Burnsville.

When I lived in Nebraska, the easy answer was I-80 east to Des Moines.

If only states I never lived in were considered, it would have to be I-90 in Wisconsin from Tomah eastward.

For interstate that also passes thru my state: I-95 in Delaware
For interstate that doesn't exist in my state: A few miles further to I-495 in Delaware

For me it would have to be I-17 & I-10 in Arizona. I used to visit Phoenix most every year from 1983-2004 to attend IndyCar races at what used to be known as Phoenix International Raceway (PIR).

If you include FUTURE Interstates, I would say I-11 (US 93), as I made the drive up from PHX to Las Vegas many times. Haven't been there since parts of I-515 officially became I-11, but have driven it all (except the Boulder City Bypass portion). And the last time I was in the area ten years ago I did get to drive (and walk) across the Tillman-O'Callaghan Memorial Bridge.

I-95 in North Carolina. Probably have clinched that interstate 25 times minimum.

Probably because of traveling to and from college on it so much, I-70 in Missouri (and sadly, it is my understanding that it hasn't been upgraded much since then).

I suppose counting I-69 north of Bloomington, Indiana would be cheating as it was just SR 37 for the vast majority of the trips I've been on it. Setting that aside it'd probably be I-65 north of Indianapolis. If we further restrict to states I've never lived in, then most likely it's I-295 north of Portland, Maine. As that was formerly designated I-95 I'm not sure whether or not it would still win out if we only count trips when it had the I-295 designation.

Probably all of I-270 in Maryland, and the segment of I-495 between the MD/VA state line and I-270.

What about any section of interstate outside of your state?

That would most likely be I-71/75 in Kentucky from Dixie Hwy to the Ohio River.

I started thinking today about which highway it would be in a state I've never lived in (I've in 5) and I think it's probably I-29 between I-35 and I-435 in Kansas City.

Oh, that's easy.  I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road) between Exit 144 (I-69) and Exit 77 (South Bend), mainly for Notre Dame football.  Even in a pandemic, the campus is great for occasional mental health trips.

Lifetime:

- I-40 in Arizona & California.
- I-15 in Utah between Provo & Ogden
- I-84 in Utah (except the stretch between I-15 and I-80), Idaho, and Oregon (mostly between Ontario & La Grande).

In more recent years:

- I-10 in Texas between the New Mexico border & El Paso.

The aforementioned 3 interstates that I've been on the most that aren't in New Mexico (my state), it's because when I was younger, my family and I would take road trips to either California or Oregon almost every year to visit family (mostly on my late mom's side).  And also, my dad used to regularly attend music workshops in San Luis Obispo.  Until my great aunt on my mom's side passed away in early 1998, my dad would be in San Luis Obispo while my mom and my sister would be with my great aunt in Reedley (sometimes we would go shopping in Fresno).  The last time I've been to Reedley was in June 2001 when my family met up with two of my aunts from eastern Oregon and Washington state and we all stayed at a bed-and-breakfast.

It is either I-90 between Beloit and US 51 in Madison or I-94 between IL State Line and I-894 in Milwaukee.

I think 1 & 2 for me are the Borman Expressway/I-80/94 in NW Indiana and the Missouri side of the Poplar Street Bridge/I-55/I-64/Former I-70

Which is 1 & 2, not sure, but now that I'm living in Southern Illinois, my PSB usage is going up, while my Borman usage is staying pretty static
