Title: Favorite Musicians/Artists
Post by: achilles765 on October 21, 2012, 04:40:16 AM
The song covers topic made me curious: what are everyone's favorite singers/bands?

For me it's Bob Dylan for solo artist and my favorite band ever that I could listen to everyday for the rest of my life is Led Zeppelin.

Best concert experience, by far:  Tommy Emmanuel.  I saw him once at a Chicago bar, and once at a theater in Hutchinson, KS.  'Initiation' will blow your mind.

Great artists to listen to on headphones:  Delerium, Chasing Furies, Silversun Pickups

Driving music:  R.E.M., Garth Brooks, John Mayer

Weird stuff:  Frank Zappa, Huun-Huur-Tu

My #1 favorite band is Pink Floyd (only the original British and I listen from albums- not a concert person).
Others I like (just a few):
AC/DC, Metallica, Nirvana, R.E.M., Rascal Flatts, Styx, Rush, Weird Al Yankovic, ZZ Top, Journey, Foreigner, and even Nickelback (please don't hate me for that  :-o).
I'm into rock, rock n' roll, metal, country, and even rap.
I think there's already a thread for this.

Carole King is my favorite solo artist, with Tom Rush and Gordon Lightfoot a close second and third.

For bands, I'd say it's a tie between America, the Eagles, and Simon and Garfunkel.

Here are some of my favorite musicians: Billy Corgan, Rob Dickinson, Trent Reznor, Maynard James Keenan, Bruce Dickinson, BT, Steven Wilson, Eddie Vedder, Rob Halford, Tori Amos, Tricky.  There are literally hundreds more but these are some of my very favorites.

I'll throw in Rush, Rush, and let me think, Rush. :)

I like everything from Rush from "Moving Pictures" on back. Haven't had much luck connecting with chicks on them, though. So I go with Arcade Fire, Art vs. Science, Florence + The Machine and whatever cool new band appears in the next few months.

I would like Rush but I can't stand Geddy Lee's voice.  They have an instrumental song that I kind of like though.

Imagine Dragons ;) I've not heard much Art vs. Science, just a drumstep remix of "Magic Fountain". I think the only Arcade Fire album I've heard is The Suburbs, and it was pretty good. The Killers' most recent album was disappointing, but I've liked what I've heard so far of The Gaslight Anthem's new one. I was expecting a pop-punk album, given the catchy first single "45", but it's turned out to be mostly alternative. I also really enjoyed the most recent Raveonettes release, but I know they're not for everyone. It was great listening to an album that actually gets faster as it goes on (what a novel concept!), and as I mentioned at the outset of this post, Imagine Dragons have a pretty good debut out.

Bruce Springsteen
The Gaslight Anthem
Mott the Hoople
The Beatles
The Who
Stones
The Corrs
The Jam
The Kinks
U2, although I haven't listened to their latest stuff very much

I have one album by Pink (Funhouse) and it's very good, but I haven't heard most of her other stuff. I might pick up some more of it. She strikes me as someone whose talent is probably obscured by her flamboyant tendencies and her often-creepy appearance (I find all the piercings and such to be strange and I don't understand why people are into doing that to themselves).

No particular order:

The Who, Pete Townsend, The Cars, The Rippingtons, Foo Fighters, R.E.M., ABBA, Prince, Jeff Lorber, the Cardigans, Roxette, Darude, The Mamas & the Papas, the Association, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Temptations, U2, Yes, Lee Ritenour, Wynton Marsalis, the Police, Sting, Billy Idol, Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Fourplay, Johnny Cash (I am not much of a fan of Country & Western, but how can you not like his voice and his music?), Frank Sinatra (his voice made him as immortal as Johnny Cash), Wes Montgomery, Journey, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, Dave Koz, Joyce Cooling, Anita Baker, A-Ha, Loverboy, Suzanne Vega, Joe Sample, the Jackson 5 (when Michael was normal-looking and normal-sounding).

I could add more, but this will have to do for now.

As far as composers go, I'd have to say John Williams (obligatory), Jerry Goldsmith, and Martin O'Donnell.

My other favorite groups include Pink Floyd, Queen, Boston, Journey, Yes, King Crimson, The Band, Pet Shop Boys, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Trocadero, and Them Crooked Vultures. I tend to prefer music that actually involves real people playing real instruments and actually singing vocals. As noted previously, I'm a sucker for a good film/video game score, too.

I love the sounds of TSO.  Now its Christmas time, their music is played all over the place.  Love Wizards in Winter and the videos that accompany it.  It might be wise next year to catch em in concert for the spectacular laser light show they supposedly have.  According to what I have read, the band's main influence is Pink Floyd, ELP, and Yes, which may explain the light show aspect of their concerts.

How did I miss this thread?

Definitely in no order:

Chicago, Kiss, Aerosmith, BTO, Ted Nugent, Foreigner, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Scorpions, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Metallica, Accept, Bad Company, Black Sabbath, Brian May, Deep Purple, Fastway, Genesis, Grim Reaper, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Rainbow, Rush, ZZ Top.

I finally gave in and looked at what's on my player. Needless to say, I have a lot, lot more, but these are the ones to which I'll default.

You'll notice the list is top-heavy with 70s and 80s bands.

ZZ King almost happened, but apparently Billy F. Gibbons thought better and came up with the name that has stuck since. Judas Priest got their name from a Bob Dylan song,

Speaking of which, Billy F. Gibbons has gone back to the early ZZ Top sound in his solo work. It's better for him to do that because he can still show where his roots in music are,

ZZ King almost happened, but apparently Billy F. Gibbons thought better and came up with the name that has stuck since.

I thought he put the name together as a mashup of Zig Zag and Tops rolling papers.

C'mon, not a single Deadhead on here? X-(

Also like The Stones, Beatles, Dylan, Phish, Rush, Yes, CSNY (and its many permutations), Queen, and many other 60's/70's acts.
I like the Dead.

My list of favorite musicians/artists may be too expansive to list here, but here are some whose discography I have explored most comprehensively thus far and listen to very often:

Blondie, U2, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Cream (and other music by Eric Clapton), Elton John, Black Sabbath, Yes, The Moody Blues, King Crimson, The Who, The Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Cars, The Smiths, Bread, Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Charley Pride, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett, John Denver, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Bee Gees, KC & The Sunshine Band, David Bowie, The Allman Brothers Band, and many more

There are many great artists whose music I have not yet heard (or heard much of) but plan to check out in the near future, so this list will grow ever longer.

I've never gone too far in on "Deadhead" culture itself - I have been to 2 shows of iterations of the group since Garcia's death (and none before), with friends and had a good time....
But, while I'm a pretty big fan, about at least 80% of the time I put on some Grateful Dead, it's the studio albums as opposed to the live stuff.
I've found there's a lot of people that just think of them as the hippie jam band (for good reason, of course) with nothing but spaced out 30 minute songs - but they had a stretch of studio work that was much more meticulously put together  (I personally think American Beauty is one of the best albums of all time), mostly concise standard-length songs that isn't much like the live stuff at all.

I listen to Toad the Wet Sprocket a lot at work.

Honestly, I first learned about them because, when I had Columbia House back in high school, I thought their name was cool so I bought the album In Light Syrup.

You should check out some post-1980 music, especially alternative rock from the early to mid 1990s. I can recommend some artists if you're interested.

You'll notice the list is top-heavy with 70s and 80s bands.

can't fault you for that.

same era for me, different genre:
joy division
new order
depeche mode
taxxi
blotto
siouxie and the banshees
talk talk
flock of seagulls
thomas dolby [b-side of 'golden age of wireless' is an experience..]
human league

etc.

when i was 12, i was rocking the 'flock of seagulls' hairdo.

Speaking of which, Billy F. Gibbons has gone back to the early ZZ Top sound in his solo work. It's better for him to do that because he can still show where his roots in music are,

ZZ Top just played in Corbin on Sunday night (an hour and 15 minutes from me.) I didn't go, but some friends did. They reported that Hill was not on stage and that the guitar tech was filling in for him. And then I read today that he was off the tour because of a hip problem, but that's probably not what killed him.

My friends reported that ZZ Top may have lost a few steps due to age, but they still put on a good show, even with the stand-in for Hill.

That got me to thinking about how bands that used to fill big arenas like Rupp Arena in Lexington are now playing much smaller venues. Foreigner is playing in Corbin later this year, and Ted Nugent played in Pikeville some time ago. (I saw both in Rupp Arena in the 1970s). Styx played at Eastern Kentucky University a few years ago and is playing at a new concert venue in extremely rural Sharpsburg (Bath County, between Mt. Sterling and Flemingsburg) later this year. Chicago never made it to Rupp, but they played Freedom Hall in Louisville on just about every tour. They played at EKU a few years ago as well.

I saw the Smashing Pumpkins in 2018 in the Chesapeake arena in Oklahoma City, then about 5 months later on the same tour at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, which is a small venue with a capacity of 2800. A lot of bands will go on tours that are arena-only, then go on a club tour.

HB, which do you prefer: arenas or small venues? I like the sound and intimacy of small venues, but many of them are standing room only, which forces me to stand up for several hours. Arena shows give me the opportunity to sit down, which is much easier on my worn out body. 20 years ago, I preferred small venues by far but in the last few years, I've learned to appreciate a good arena show.

What, no Iron Maiden?

And Saigon Kick surprises me; I figured they would be a little too "hair band" for your tastes.

As to your arena vs. theater question, I haven't been to a concert in eons. Most every one I ever saw was in Rupp Arena. My wife has seen a number of shows in outdoor amphitheaters over the years and seemed to like them, although the weather can be a factor sometimes if it's really hot.

I don't dig the arena shows just because I don't feel like I'm part of the show.  The best thing ever is a big band in a small venue.  I saw Jane's Addiction at The Beaumont (now closed) in Kansas City and it blew my mind.  If I'm going to be in a slightly larger space, I'd much prefer it to be outside and I'm very spoiled to have Red Rocks in my vicinity (coincidentally, also where my high school graduation was, which is realistically the coolest place in the world to have a high school graduation).

I was listing 1990s bands, I consider Maiden more of a 1980s band. Even they're still going as strong as ever.

I don't really consider Saigon Kick to be a pop metal band. I just consider them a "metal" band. Their third album Water is about as far from pop metal as you can get. They had their mullet ballad, but the rest of their stuff is much heavier than the Warrants and Poisons of the world. They got unfairly lumped into a genre they never really embraced, and unfortunately, that killed their careers. If they hadn't gotten typecast as a hair band, Water might have been an alternative rock hit.

Over the past few months I have delved into the discography of these artists, who have great music, and I highly appreciate the suggestions.
