One of the most interesting things to me as I learned about highway geometry in college, is that vertical curves are always designed to be parabolic.  I thought for sure he would mention this.  Anyone who said that quadratic equations have no purpose in real life needs to think again!  My degree and job are both in civil engineering with a transportation focus.

The non-engineers that don't have to use quadratic equations to determine parabolic curves far outnumber the engineers that do.
