How Many 2dis Have You Clinched on Only One Trip?

Started thinking about this when looking at the "Longest You've Stayed on One Highway on a Given Trip" thread.  Which primary interstates (just limiting it to that for now since otherwise we'll go down the black hole into state highways and everything else) have you clinched in one shot?  Stopping for the night is fine, but getting back on the highway at the same spot is a must.

Also, if you want, highlight the longest one you've done so.

My list:
I-A4
I-4
I-11
I-12
I-17
I-19
I-22
I-24 - Longest at 316.36 miles
I-27
I-37
I-45
I-49* (when it was just Shreveport-Lafayette)
I-68
I-73* (when it was just between Rockingham and Ulah)
I-76 (western)
I-82
I-86 (western)
I-88 (western)
I-88 (eastern)
I-89
I-91
I-97
I-99* (when it was only in Pennsylvania)

20 current 2dis, 23 if you include ones that I clinched the entirety of them as they existed

The most notable for me was I-65 which was often the Route of choice between the Great Lakes states and Destin, FL on family visit trips.

I-8
I-11 (as it exists now)
I-17
I-19
I-66
I-68
I-88W

I-44 I got all that existed the first time I was on it but have not been back to get the rest.
I-76W I missed the part west of I-25 the first time I was on it so close but not quite.

And kept on it from Montgomery to Mobile?  Seems like that would be out of the way.

I've clinched three different Texas 2dis in one-day trips: I-27, I-14, and I-37 (the last two on the same day).

Certainly helped that we frequented a lot of places along the coast near the state line.  My Dad was what we would consider a Roadgeek too, staying on course was he would do to finish a highway.

Olive Garden must be stopped.  I must stop them.

Don't @ me. Seriously.

The only 2di I've even clinched in one trip is I-12, which I did 11 years ago. Coincidentally, it is also the only 2di I've clinched.

My list is pretty sad. In fact, it doesn't even exist unless you count NY's portion of I-99.  :sombrero:

Doesn't help that most of my 2di travels have been on very long routes - I-90, I-80, etc. So for a lot of the shorter 2di's, I either haven't been on them (I-68, I-97) or have been on segments, but not clinched them (I-78, I-83, I-88 NY, I-99).

SkyPesos

Just I-78 for me. The only other 2di I've clinched is I-71, but that was done with multiple trips.

bassoon1986

I-12, I-49 (original LA portion), and I-45. 45 being the longest.

Eastern 88 – in one sitting without getting off, and also the only 2di I've clinched.

It would be reasonable to stay on I-65 until Georgiana (between Montgomery and Mobile).  You can then easily take AL 55, FL 85 and FL 293 to Destin.  Alternatively, AL 55, US 29, AL 137, FL 189, FL 85, FL 293.

I would go pretty much that way annually (although actually going to to Fort Walton Beach, eschewing FL 293).  I preferred it to US 331 and all those small towns with 25 mph speed traps limits.  Even though longer, it was about 10 minutes faster.

Assuming (as usual) allowing for stops for gas, food, and lodging.

All my 2di's driven beginning to end in one shot (my "Travel Mapping" log used as source) :
     I-85  (677 miles)
     I-84  (232 miles) (Eastern version)
     I-88  (118 miles) (Eastern version)
     I-68  (111 miles)
     I-99  (86 miles)
     I-97  (17 miles)
     I-87  (13 miles)  (Southern version)

i think the only 2DI I've clinched in a single driving/riding session is I-24

I don't think I've ever single-tripped I-88/IL from I-290 to I-80

sparker

On my 3rd cross-country trip of 1989 (the 2700+ mile stint on I-80 was on the first of that year), I managed to clinch the following:  I-66, I-97, I-83, and the eastern I-88 (the last about 3 weeks after the final connection to I-81 was opened).  So far that's a personal 2di record for a single trip.  I spent about 40% of that year on the road -- and consider it one of the best years I've had to date!

I-59 is the longest that comes to mind.

I-68, I-82, I-88 (NY) and I-97, also.

I'm picky when clinching, so the very closest would be I-30, except for what's probably a half-mile outside of Dallas, where I did a short detour to snag a county.

For I-66, I never started up by the Kennedy Center or wherever it ends and headed all the way out to I-81, but that's another close one.

To make sure I'm clear on the concept, this doesn't mean "the most 2dis you've clinched on one single road trip," right? In other words, if I take a two-week trip to Florida to visit relatives, I'm not adding up how many 2dis I clinched in the course of that overall trip, right? (I think the maximum number for any such trip was one, that being I-4, and for most such trips it's been zero.) You're asking overall how many times have we clinched a 2di in a straight shot without exiting other than for things like gas/food/toilet/tourism/overnight stops as long as you re-enter at the same interchange, right?

We had a thread like that about five years ago, "Longest Interstate clinched non-stop," but as the subject line indicates, the OP there imposed the very strict criterion that you couldn't leave the main travel lanes for any reason, not even to stop at a rest area to hit the head.

In reference to 2dis, my answer there was only I-4 because on I-68 the one time I've driven the length of the road on a single trip I stopped at the West Virginia welcome center to hit the head. (At the time I had not yet been on I-88 in New York and I hadn't completed I-97.) Assuming I'm interpreting the question for this thread correctly, I believe my current list is I-4, I-68, I-85 via its old alignment in Greensboro (the new alignment didn't exist yet), I-88 in New York, and I-97.

I don't count North Carolina's I-87, in part because I travelled that segment in the mid-1990s when there was no thought of it being an Interstate, and I've never gotten I-66 in one shot (makes sense given where I live) nor I-83 (while I've clinched it, it makes little sense to head into downtown Baltimore to pick up the southern end if I'm on a longer trip).

Living on the East Coast in the DC area makes this a bit of a challenge because the more important 2dis around here (I-95, I-81, I-70) are less susceptible to clinching in a single shot; of those three, someone living around here would probably have the best shot at doing this as to I-70 simply because you're closer to where it ends (or begins) in Baltimore , whereas for the other two you're midstream such that a single-shot clinch would involve a lot of travel to one end of the road just to turn around and drive the whole thing.

Your interpretation is correct.  Not most interstates in one trip, merely which interstates have been driven from end to end in a single trip without draconian limitations.

I-68 (at least a couple times)
I-76 western
I-96

I've driven all of I-66 but not in one trip.

Only 1...but it's a goodie...I-76 Eastern, from NJ to OH.

paulthemapguy

2di's I have clinched: 12 24 39 41 43 55 57 65 68 72 74 76w 84e 86w 88w (15 of them)
Of those, I have clinched (12, 41, 68, 76w, 84e, 86w) each in a single trip.

side notes- I-59 was nearly clinched in a single trip but the viaducts were closed in Birmingham, rerouting me onto I-459.  I-65 was almost clinched in a single trip, too, but I took a detour between exits 45 and 77 in Alabama.  I clinched the remainder of I-65 later on a separate trip, but I never got back to I-59.
Avatar is the last interesting highway I clinched.

I decided to look at my numbers further.  I've clinched a total of 25 2dis, and all but 7 were one in one shot. (I recently edited my OP since I forgot about I-A4 and I-82).

The only ones I haven't clinched all at once were:
I-16 (I-95 to Macon in 2001, and the portion east of I-95 in January)
I-25 (Albuquerque to Las Cruces in 1988, Colorado Springs to Denver in 1992, Castle Rock to Albuquerque & Denver to Cheyenne in 1994, and Cheyenne to Buffalo in 1995)
I-44 (First clinched a bit of concurrency in OKC in 1988, then Tulsa to St. Louis in 2003, and Wichita Falls to Tulsa in 2011)
I-70 (Denver to Grand Junction in 1992, Kansas City to Denver in 1995, Kansas City to St. Louis in 1999, St. Louis to Indianapolis in 2001, Indianapolis to Bedford in 2003, and BALTIMORE to Bedford in January)
I-72 (Champaign to Springfield in 2002 and Hannibal to Springfield in 2003)
I-83 (I-695 to York in 2003 and downtown Baltimore to I-695 in January)
I-84 (western) (Ogden to Hermiston in 2005, Ogden to Echo in 2010, Hermiston to Portland in 2020)
