Nine Span Bridge Officially Done - Hammond, IN

Another one of Northwest Indiana's bridges is closed for demolition.

The locally famous "Nine Span" bridge, which carries Indianapolis Boulevard (Indiana 152) over a massive rail yard and transport station, will be torn down and replaced with a new structure. The truss bridge was deemed to be in poor shape.

The old structure won't be completely gone; it will be converted to a bike/pedestrian trail. The entire project is set to be finished by the end of the year. Those looking to continue on Indianapolis Blvd. or reach the East Chicago South Shore train station will be detoured on I-80/94 East, Indiana 912 North, and U.S. 20 West back to Indianapolis Boulevard. The inverse route is used for southbound traffic.
