Sounds like the Keystone State is having deer overpopulation issues. Is it hard to get licensed to hunt up there?

I'm quite surprised that no one made a horror film out of this. Next to getting hit by vehicles and shot by hunters, this is a horrible way for deer to die.

Johnsonburg has a 2-lane bypass that was built about 10 years ago. It avoids the paper mill and the small "downtown" along old US 219.

There appears to be several bridges along the US 219 bypass. It's not entirely clear which one is shown in the image in the article.

I passed through Johnsonburg about a decade ago and I recall it being very slow due to construction and heavy truck traffic, so that would align with the timeframe of the bypass being built.

The deer are not suicidal, they are jumping over a guardrail that they think is mere feet above the ground on the other side.

Does it kill them? Of course.

Deer have no concept of bridges like this, especially when they can see the tops of the trees on the other side of the guard rail.

They are probably migrating to a known food source and when they ramble across the bridge and a car comes, they run and if they feel cornered they will jump the railing, thinking its a valid escape.

Have you ever seen a deer feed itself to predator? Of course not.

^^
Exactly.  Animals have no concept of human-made things.  That's why they're always flying into windows, getting hit by cars, and gnawing through wires.
Closest thing animicules have to 'suicide' is attacking a predator to defend their offspring.

Not a horror film but the scene from Tommy Boy where the deer got its revenge by scrapping the car is priceless.

Obviously I know that deer aren't really committing suicide. It's a takeoff of the spoof road sign image I've seen, "Suicidal Deer Crossing."

Maybe the deer have been listening to the M*A*S*H* theme song too many times:

I'm presuming this is a rerouting of US 219?

(Posted in Ohio Valley because this appears to be in the Allegheny River watershed.)

Johnsonburg has a 2-lane bypass that was built about 10 years ago. It avoids the paper mill and the small "downtown" along old US 219.

Drove over this last Tuesday. Didn't see any deer leaping to their deaths but you can see the whole town as you drive over the bridge.
