* MA: extending I-290 that far south dilutes the meaning of the number. (agreed)

CT: Extending I-395 that far north dilutes the meaning of the number. :D
It makes no sense to have one route terminate at another route's beginning when they run on the same line.
I agree it should be I-695 or even better given the length, I-97/99...if not I-93...with current I-93 being I-97/99.
So dumb that I-97/99 are where they are.

99 being assigned thanks to Bud Shuster was and is infuriating.
97 at least kinda fits the grid and serves a state capital.
With 97 and 99 taken, how about I-101 for 395/290?  :P

(190 being orphaned from another x90 is bothersome if 290 were renumbered. Would it need to become an x95? Probably not necessarily, but it would be more consistent--if they are that worried about 290 vs. 295, then they should be worried about an orphan x90 too.)
Fuck Bud Shuster, let's just rename I-99 and get a real interchange at Breezewood.

Personally, and granted this is fictional territory, if I-290/395 were to become I-695; one solution to the I-190 orphaning issue would be to have it redesignated as I-395.  Problem solved.

The other alternative, fiction-wise, could be to have I-395 continue north taking over I-290 from the Pike to I-190 and then I-190 north to MA 2. The rest of I-290 could be redesignated as an East/West I-695.

Perhaps we should just accept the fact that these two Interstates are numbered 395 and 290, and move any discussion about renumberings to Fictional Highways.

For what it's worth, the idea of extending I-395 over I-290 is a real MassDOT idea.  However, everything else on changing to a different number, renumbering I-190 (I think the I-x78 numbers in NYC are perfect evidence that policy makers don't care about whether 3dis get orphaned), etc. is indeed fictional.

But why was it two interstates in the first place since it continues straight?

I think it's because 290 was constructed first (1960s) - I believe 395 didn't come through MA until the 1970s, and even then it was MA-52.

That’s right. I think I-395 didn't even exist until the changeover from CT/MA 52 in 1983-84.

My opinion about 290/395 in the Worcester area is that they should renumber 290 to 395, because it is an east west route, but it runs only around 12 miles east/west, but it still runs around 7 miles as north/south, so I think they should decommission 290 fully. The other option would be to make 395 run up 290 until the 190 junction, and then decommission 190 fully, and make it 395, and still have 290 from junction with 190 to eastern terminus at I-495. I wish this could happen as the roads there are really confusing.

Roads I have clinched- I-84 (MA-CT-NY-PA), I-78 (NY-NJ-PA), I-395 (DC-VA), I-695 (Both DC and NY), I-490 (NY), I 390 (NY), I-787 (NY), I-287 (NY-NJ), I-795 (NC), I-140 (NC), I-295 (Both VA and MD), I-270 (MD), And I am only 13 so I have much more to clinch.
