The forum rules are "political discussion is discouraged."  It is illogical to limit the talk to the "signing, striping, and roads of CHAZ" in an forum called "Off-Topic."

I mean are we only allosed to talk about the road-related aspects of the Coronavirus in that topic?

So what do you plan to talk about w/r/t CHAZ that isn't politically charged, other than roads?

The Capitol Hill neighborhood has an interesting history or at least was more documented than I expected.  Then again, Seattle had a lot of neighbors and districts that have a unique history to them.  Ballard, Pioneer Square, Queen Anne, and West Seattle were four that I ended up even featuring on Gribblenation.

Besides, a lot of the heated political commentary on the COVID thread ended up being deleted just the same as thread.

TBH, any discussion of CHAZ really belongs in this thread:

Nah.  Those CHAZ road signs look much better.

They also don't exist.

And there is no secret war with the police.

What?  No OTAZ (Off-Topic Autonomous Zone)?   :sombrero:

Much agreed.  If we were to limit discussion to signing, striping, and roads only of CHAZ, it belongs here: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?board=27.0
This is for everything else.

Forum rules still apply to Off-Topic, and always have.

The rules are about political speech, and you know that.  Limited Off-Topic discussion to roads renders the off-topic section meaningless.

We used to have a now-banned poster called "marf".  Wonder if that was what his handle was supposed to mean?  :-D

I guess I agree if this is supposed to be just about the roads, it doesn't make sense as an Off-Topic thread. Good ol' General Highway Talk seems like a fit...

I think the problem is it's hard to have a rational discussion of politics without someone throwing a grenade into the middle of it.

The only grenade I've seen in this thread is MisterSG1 (which was quickly deleted before anyone could respond). NE2 seems to be nowhere near as active as he was before.

Rational discussions of politics are definitely possible.

Not to bring in a large political debate, but this is an accurate prediction of where we are today.

Forum rules still apply to Off-Topic, and always have.

The rules are about political speech, and you know that.  Limited Off-Topic discussion to roads renders the off-topic section meaningless.

All 36 forum rules apply to the off-topic section. Period. The off-topic section exists to allow users to get to know each other outside of the context of roads. It is not a free-for-all; "off-topic" does not imply "all topics".

Generally, if there is a chance that a thread will operate within the forum rules, we prefer to leave it running as long as it doesn't cause a problem. Threads that are inherently political will get shut down quickly. The "2020 Minneapolis riots" thread was shut down within 48 hours, for instance. This thread would have been shut down too, but the discussion of the signs upthread caused us to hold off on shutting it down because we wanted to see if we could have a thread focusing on those, without controversy. Apparently not.

Bruce, I appreciate your providing a look at conditions on the ground at CHAZ/CHOP (amateur photojournalism is a thing the world needs more of), but unfortunately I don't think there's any way to have the conversation here without it becoming controversial.
