They should get rid of this loop and replace it with a flyover. The AADT on the loop is over 10,000 and it gets bloody congested. And yet, it opened in 2007.

You know what, make this whole interchange a 4-level stack. Easy.

Too many to count, and for good reason. DOTs and other road-building agencies can't find money quickly enough to keep up with increases in travel demand.

How do you create a 4 level stack when a leg of the interchange is missing?

Just demolish the whole interchange and start over

There's no need for a 4-level stack when only three legs exist for the interchange. Only a 3-level stack would be necessary.

Well, in fairness, they are going to be constructing the southern portion of NC-540 within the next decade, so it will extend eventually.

The ultimate build could be a four-level stack - though the movement from NC-540 North to I-87 South could suffice as a loop as planned - but yes, not now.

Honestly, the only improvement that needs to happen IMO is that flyover from I-540 East to I-87 North. The rest of the interchange can remain as is or as planned.

I-70 and US 63 in Columbia, MO is rather infamous for using a diamond and traffic signals to make a freeway-to-freeway connection.  https://goo.gl/maps/jArJrT2ciPh3Jwyw9  .  Good luck coming up with a design for a free-flowing interchange that doesn't take a ton of property, though.

Could you argue that some of the Houston area interchanges are underbuilt?  I'm thinking of situations where two freeways are accessed via frontage roads and not direct connectors.

Does TX-249 have some like this?  Newer portions of the Grand Parkway?

Cause they don't take up as much space?

Don't forget I-70/E470 in Denver! Though, that one actually has a free-flowing movement from NM E470 to WB I-70.

Yeah, the interchange between the Hardy Toll Road and Sam Houston Tollway leaves a lot to be desired.
