Mn/DOT scanned their archives (minus two editions) for the Minnesota Digital Library. If I ever get around to playing in an image editor to stitch the two files together, I have most of the old Michigan maps in electronic form that were scanned by the Library of Michigan. (The maps were larger than the drum scanner, so they had to get them to me in two passes each.) I can legally put pre-1958 online since the Michigan State Highway Department didn't copyright their maps before that year.)

My link was fine, but the forum software borks FTP links. It may be an older version anyway; changing to yours.
Actually, it seems the forum software (now?) handles FTP links, but they have to be identified using a FTP tag instead of the URL tag despite the fact that both HTTP and FTP locators are URLs.

Nice. That's at least a third of the states with good temporal coverage.
North Carolina has one from each decade at its NCDOT site: http://www.ncdot.org/travel/mappubs/statetransportationmap/ (http://www.ncdot.org/travel/mappubs/statetransportationmap/)

They upgraded their delivery system for this. Here is the new link:
http://digitool1.lva.lib.va.us:8881/R/BQMV91RVBBJGP41886TECQ4VVBTXPP3SJX9U3696FTR2JBIVE7-00753?func=search (http://digitool1.lva.lib.va.us:8881/R/BQMV91RVBBJGP41886TECQ4VVBTXPP3SJX9U3696FTR2JBIVE7-00753?func=search)
Click on search, enter the county you want, then in the "select collection" pulldown choose map collection.
They did not add any of the missing 1936 maps to the collection...still about 80% of the counties covered.

At least every other year from 1918 to 1946, every year from 1948 to 1967 (during the major freeway building era), then every few years from 1969 to 1990.

Sweet thanks for posting the link! I was using the UF map site and this gives more years than what they have and the option to view the PDF all at once instead of an in-browser viewer.
I recently finished updating all of the Santa Rosa County and Hernando County pages on the main site. Was working on Escambia, and now I see that SSR 293 went further south, over what is now part of SR 292 (before Sorrento Road was built). Looking at Hernando, SR 50 did go all the way out to the coast on what is now CR 550, SSR 420 was replaced with CR 578, etc.

I've posted my Louisiana highway maps online. The only years that I have are 1930, 1937, 1940 Census, 1955, and 1958. 1955 shows the final year of highway renumbering. 1944 and 1988 are being uploaded this week, with the census maps being added as I can find time to sit down and download then upload. The census maps are in sections, so you will have to pan from one map to another map by closing and opening files.

To do some Wikipedia research on US 8 and US 141, I visited WisDOT's library in Madison in April 2013. When I was in contact with them at the time in 2012—13, they had said they were planning to scan their old maps and get them online "within the next year". I think that project was pending some specific funding or something, and it hasn't come to fruition yet. I haven't found any other institutions who have scanned them and put them online yet either.

Some historical South Carolina maps:
http://www.scdot100.org/maps.aspx
Are any legible pre-1966 images available?
I'd ask the same thing about the post-1966 images. I'm looking at Jasper County, and I still can't get a clear view of it when I zoom in. For all I can see, I-95 always had mileage-based exit numbers, and the segment of US 17 that crosses over into Savannah today could've been part of US 80!

The pdfs they have for the post-1966 maps are fairly clear even when zoomed in...
For I-95 in Jasper County you can see multiple scans at the bottom of this page - http://www.vahighways.com/scannex/route-log/i095.htm - the 1976 scan comes from that SCDOT site.
1976 was the first SC Official to show exit numbers on any of their interstates...

It has now been 6 minutes since I posted that message, and they're still blurry. On your site, they're quite clear, though.

Just curious, are you trying to view the pdfs in your browser? Or are you downloading them first and viewing them in Acrobat?

I'm not sure I can get Acrobat anymore. Some of the recent updates to my PC over the past year or so killed a lot of programs for me.

I'm not exactly sure about the "better quality state maps" link; this is the start page for accessing UNR's "Historic Maps of Nevada and the Great Basin" collection and maybe it can be narrowed down from there but I couldn't figure it out quickly:

Not necessarily state maps, but Ohio has added to its digital archive
Aerial Imagery Archive
The office of CADD and Mapping Services has implemented a new innovative way to search for historic aerial imagery. You can now access the entire ODOT Aerial Imagery Archive through a single Google Earth (KML) file.
To use our Google Earth (KML) file you must have Google Earth installed on your desktop computer.
Next, all you need to do is download the Aerial Imagery Archive (KML) file.
http://tas.transportation.ohio.gov/Imagery/KMZ/ODOT_AerialArchive.kml (http://tas.transportation.ohio.gov/Imagery/KMZ/ODOT_AerialArchive.kml)
Now open the Aerial Imagery Archive (KML) in Google Earth and begin your imagery search!
We have structured the Google Earth (KML) file as follows:
Top level is sorted by DECADE
Second level under DECADE is sorted by YEAR
Third level under YEAR is sorted by DATE of imagery
Forth level under DATE is sorted by each IMAGE
The ODOT Aerial Imagery Archive contains over 500,000 individual images. Each image is represented in Google Earth as a single center point for each image. The image center point is displayed as a camera icon. The Google Earth time slider has been enabled for searching through specific time periods depending on the imagery loaded or toggled on. Also, when searching for images try to load specific years or single decades and not the entire aerial archive as this may result in Google Earth crashing due to the extensive amount of image points being loaded.
The aerial images available for download are not orthophotos therefore, will not overlay properly when loading in Google Earth or other GIS applications.

Yeah, UNR libraries has been undertaking a massive update/migration to all their digital archives over the last couple years. The NDOT map collection, originally hosted on the DeLaMare Library Map Collection site, was a better reference source cause their map scans were much higher quality than the PDFs on NDOT's website. The UNR maps were inaccessible for nearly a year, but they are now back online–however, they don't have the same direct categorization they used to, so you have to wade through other maps to find the road maps.
Another state puts its collection online: lots of historic highway maps of South Dakota, here: https://history.sd.gov/Archives/
Not super easy to search, as some maps are tagged with the subject "highway"; others are "road maps"; and still others have neither of those tags. But altogether I've found over 20 highway maps ranging from 1926-1973 (most produced by the state; some by commercial publishers).
I didn't see anyone else post this one:
www.oldmapsonline.org
Click on "Browse the old maps" and you can zoom in and out as well click and hold the cursor to move the selection box anywhere in the country. The right pane will show available old maps you can view for FREE.

That site doesn't exist. The domain hasn't even been registered (https://www.whois.com/whois/historicmapsonline.org). Did you perhaps mistype the URL?
My mistake, I have edited the URL in my above post to the correct site. Apologies.
The Mississippi link has changed: https://mdot.ms.gov/portal/maps (https://mdot.ms.gov/portal/maps)
It's not as convenient as it used to be, as there doesn't seem to be a master list of historical maps as there was before. But the maps are still there. Scroll down a bit and look for the archive search box, where you can type in the year you want and see the results.
South Carolina now has older issues available on-line via Univ of SC...
Many state officials from 1922-51 can be found here (https://digital.tcl.sc.edu/digital/collection/sclmaps/search/searchterm/roads%20--%20south%20carolina%20--%20maps!south%20carolina%20--%20maps/field/subjec!subjec/mode/exact!exact/conn/and!and/order/nosort/ad/asc)
NJ General Highway Maps from late 1970s/early 80s (https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/business/localaid/maps.shtm)
I can't seem to get the PDFs to open directly from my Firefox browser but am able to download and open in a separate viewer.

I downloaded all of the historic maps of Mississippi a few years ago. I can upload them to a cloud service or I can email you the maps if it's easier.
The "(also county maps)" link for North Carolina currently brings up a 404 Page Not Found error.
ODOT (Oregon) had their GIS guys scan their official state highway maps from 1919 through 2002, and the ODOT librarian had them added to the Oregon State Library archives:
https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A67676 (https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A67676)
There are a few gap years that may or may not have had maps published -- I have an official 1950 state highway map in my collection that isn't in this archive -- but it's remarkably thorough. There was even apparently a map published in 1945, possibly right after the end of the war.

Nice, thanks! That makes 40 out of 50 states with historic DOT map collections online. I don't know if the original list in this thread is being updated anymore, but I am using this thread to help keep
this page (https://www.usends.com/sources.html) updated.
