Article about major construction projects for 2018 in the Kansas City area. 2018 construction list in Southwest Missouri. If I find any other articles for other regions in the state, I will update this post.

Also, a gas tax increase will be debated again this year in the legislature. The 21st Century Missouri Transportation System Task Force recommended an increase of 10 cents, among other revenue sources for roads. If it passes through the legislature, it will go to a public vote in November. I'm cautiously optimistic it will pass, but then again it is Missouri  :-|.

MODOT will be converting the I-70/I-435 interchange near the stadiums to a partial turbine interchange. Say goodbye to those left hand exits.

https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/big-change-coming-to-busy-interchange-in-kcmo.
QuoteKANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Changes are coming to the I-70 and I-435 interchange near Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadium.

The interchange sees about 100,000 cars every day. It's also seen several crashes over recent years, especially involving tractor trailer roll overs.

"On those ramps, there are pretty tight turns, especially for tractor trailers. And if they aren't paying enough attention, they simply cannot navigate it and the trucks tip over," said Chris Redline, the Assistant District Engineer for MoDOT.

That was the case Wednesday morning when a tanker truck rolled over and spilled chicken fat in the interchange, causing a ramp closure for more than five hours.

In 2019, MoDOT will start replacing some of the bridges in the interchange to help make is safer. They will be building what is called a "Partial Turbine" configuration.

As part of the project, crews will make the two loop ramps less sharp and more rounded. The interchange will also get rid of the two left exits from I-435 to I-70 and instead feature flyovers around the interchange. This will help with congestion on I-435, especially during the evening commute.

The project is estimated at $40 million and is fully funded by MoDOT.

When the project starts next year, there will be ramp closures and even full closures of parts of I-70 as they tear down and rebuild the bridges.

EDIT: The I-70 Second Tier Combined Final Environmental Impact Statement has been submitted.  They do not have funding for construction except for the I-70/I-435 interchange and the recently completed Manchester Trafficway bridges.

http://www.modot.org/kansascity/metroi70/
QuoteThe I-70 Second Tier Combined Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision document has been submitted for publication in the Federal Register on Jan. 19, 2018.

MoDOT and FHWA combined the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) in accordance with provisions on environmental documentation in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.  MoDOT and FHWA have addressed all agency and public comments from the DEIS in the combined FEIS/ROD.

The combining of the FEIS and ROD means that there will be no comment period on the FEIS.  However, MoDOT and FHWA previously invited comments based on information provided in an EIS update packet provided to DEIS commenters and made available on this website.

With the signing of the combined FEIS/ROD, FHWA approves MoDOT Preferred Alternative as the Selected Alternative for I-70 between the Paseo Boulevard and Blue Ridge Cutoff in Kansas City, Missouri.

The final study document is now available on this website, as well.

MoDOT thanks all the community members, organizations and agencies who participated in the study and helped us develop the preferred environmental alternative.

Any word on what is planned (more lanes? roundabout)? Seems like every few years, MoDOT redoes this intersection.

It looks like they are lengthening the eastbound right-turn lane and possibly also updating the signals.  Plans (about 4 MB) are available at this link:

http://www.kctv5.com/story/37610649/modot-to-permanently-close-ramp-from-nb-i-435-to-rt-210

They're demolishing the flyover from 435 NB to 210 WB. This will enable them to finally get rid of the lane drop near that intersection and make it three continuous lanes through there.

The I-435/Rte 210 project is supposed to be completed by the end of this year.

Next year they will start the I-70/I-435 interchange project (tentative letting this August). That will get rid of the left exits at that interchange and most of the 435 beltway in KS and MO won't have any left exits (with the exception of the MO-350 exit off of 435 SB and the 435EB to 71NB ramp). It should be at least three lanes everywhere except between exits 22 and 49. The concurrency with I-29 is also at least 3 lanes.

I think I got everything but I probably missed something. Feel free to correct me if you guys see any wrong info.

EDIT: 435 is only two lanes through the Grandview Triangle interchange.

I found links to the INFRA grants that MODOT applied for: http://www.modot.org/plansandprojects/documents/TheMerchantsBridgeRehabilitationProgram110217Final.pdf and http://www.modot.org/plansandprojects/documents/MissouriDOT-INFRA-Grant-2017-10-30-v3.pdf

The second link is more interesting because if they get the grant, there could be a lot of important projects that they could do, including widening I-70 from Wentzville to Warrenton, the I-270 North Project, and the I-70 Missouri River bridge.

They might be considering a gas tax increase in the legislature this week. If they pass a 10 cent gas tax increase (I'm not holding my breath), it could go to a public vote depending on how the increase is implemented. If it's all at once, then it would go to a public vote. If it's phased in over something like 5 years then it might not need to go to one. I'm not sure what the threshold is that triggers a public vote.

I am not a tax nut but this is needed. I support a 5 cent fed gas tax as well. 8 cents on diesel. I would support 2 more cents for both to support Amtrak so they can have their own trust fund and stop the madness with them.
