While SMC has had to deal with the  tragic construction accident south of Alabang on the Skyway extension, the NLEX operators have gotten into hot water with the Manila suburb of Valenzuela, due to traffic problems related to glitches in RFID tolltag implementation at the tollbooths approaching that city.

The deadline has been moved back twice from November to December, and from December to January.

For that matter, the current tollbooth setup on Philippine expressway is not high speed cashless, but rather traditional low-speed tollbooths being converted to ETC.  (This in part explains why the NLEX toll plazas in Valenzuela have not been flowing well as of late)

Further north, in Tarlac/Nueva Ecija, the Central Luzon Link Expressway project is progressing nicely, with a targeted completion of April 2021.  Essentially a spur route off NLEX, the CLLEX will bring the communities of Cabanatuan and Aliaga onto the expressway network (and significantly reduce travel time both to Tarlac/Pampanga and to Metro Manila).  (An analogy: NLEX is to I-65 in Decatur, Alabama as CLLEX is to I-565)
