HOV lanes serve no useful purpose, especially on the left side. You just end up stuck behind left lane hogs who are even more so because they think they can go even slower because it is not a passing lane. The inability to legally enter and exit them worsens traffic and they would be better if they were just an additional normal lane. In Long Island everyone knows to avoid that lane.

In Hartford HOVs use it at rush hour because it's faster than being in stopped traffic. People routinely cross the double line to enter and exit it though.

Including myself though, as there are typical hogs that block, and that extra wide gap between them is a waste of a lane.

Maybe the HOV lanes should be HOT lanes. That way they could be utilized more efficiently.
