NJDOT's main high-profile, high-dollar construction projects really haven't changed much for the past several years: The Pulaski Skyway and the 295/76/42 interchange project.

You can consider the I-95 resigning a high-profile project that is quick and easy.

The GSP will be wrapping up the southern end of their 45 mile widening project.

Illinois. US 34 Freeway is shut down and traffic is being diverted to Illinois 164 old 34 until October. There are sporadic closures on 34 around Galesburg and near Biggsville as well as 4 laning in Kendall county. If you want to include the 110 which includes part of 34 there is the Macomb bypass opening. 74 was mentioned in Iowa.

bzakharin

The Scudder Falls Bridge replacement and the PA Turnpike / I-95 interchange round out the high-profile projects in my area along with what @Jeffandnicole already mentioned.

For VA its by far the Transform I-66 project(construction just began and is expected to last until late 2022). The Rappahannock River Crossing Project(southbound) on I-95 is probably a distant #2, with the continued widening of I-64 up to Williamsburg #3.

There is the $3.4 billion I-64 HRBT and approaches expansion between I-664 and I-564, but that is scheduled for 2019 award.

The $410 million I-64 High-Rise Bridge expansion, and widening of 9 miles of I-64, began in 2018.

What about the Thimble Shoal tunnel?

Kansas:

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct (WB I-70) reconstruction project began in February and will continue for two years. Subsequent phases of the project will replace the EB viaduct and eliminate the "death curve."

The transition to open-road tolling on the Kansas Turnpike continues this year. The eastern terminal (MM 217) conversion was completed a few months ago. The East Topeka (MM 183) project is currently underway and is expected to be completed this coming November. The southern terminal project will take place in 2019.

The third major project is the East Kellogg (US-54/400) improvements in Wichita. By 2021, Kellogg will be a full freeway between the KTA toll plaza and K-96. The project also includes improved access to the Kansas Turnpike. Project overview and timeline: http://eastkelloggimprovements.com/about

NY:

Tappan Zee (duh)
I-81/NY 17 Prospect Mountain

Both of those are in their final stages. Everything else is relatively low-profile. I-87/NY 155 (starting this year) is a level down, I-390/490 a level below that.

What?
Not sure what you mean by "a level down", but it sounds kind of insulting. I-390/I-490/NY 31 impacts way more of the motoring public than Prospect Mountain. Pretty sure it has more new roadway mileage, too, and if you're talking about importance, it's badly needed.

I had to Google Search NY 155 to even find out where it is, nevermind what the planned improvements are.

In Tennessee, I can think of three off the top of my head:

- Memfix 4 project for I-240 in east Memphis, replacing the Poplar Avenue bridges and the Norfolk Southern bridge and rehabilitating the Park Avenue bridge. Work started in January with total ABC closures starting this summer. Project completion June 2019
- I-440 reconstruction in Nashville, replacing the old concrete with asphalt, removing the grassy median, and widening to 6 lanes throughout (this is badly needed, especially on the bridge through the I-65 stack). Project completion 2021
- I-75/I-24 interchange project in Chattanooga, reconfiguring the interchange to eliminate confusing weaving patterns (and emphasize 75 as the thru route). Project completion unknown

I-5 reconfiguration in Tacoma continues

I-5 in Seattle is being repaved over weekend-long closures and lane reductions

The I-90 express lanes are being converted to light rail use

The SR 520 project is moving into the next phase (rebuilding the SR 513/Montlake interchange and replacing the eastbound approach bridge)

The SR 99 Tunnel is scheduled to open in October, followed by demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct

I'd put them closer on par with each other.  Sure 390/490 has more traffic, has congestion issues, and is needed, but it didn't involve a major river bridge or adding C/D roads across that river, or blasting the side of a mountain.

In terms of intensity/volume of work being done, I'd give that title to 81/17/Prospect Mtn...

Prospect Mountain is also fixing a major safety issue and is under the I-86 banner.  It's definitely a major project - there's a reason why both phases put together are taking over a decade to complete!

NY 155 is more commonly known as the Exit 4 flyover.  That exit is pretty congested.  Exit 4 SB and the ramp to I-87 NB both tend to back up quite a bit in rush hour, the latter of which causes congestion on both the mainline and Wolf Road.

Yeah, no question that Tappan Zee and Prospect Mountain are the top two statewide. But I-390/I-490 is still a fairly large-scale rehab; no matter how you define your "levels", it must be somewhere in the top ten projects.

I'm grasping at straws for Maryland.  Nothing is really that high profile.

But a project that's supposed to commence this year is upgrading US 219 from I-68 to the PA state line.

And reconstruct the I-270/MD 85 interchange starts this year:
http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/WebProjectLifeCycle/ProjectInformation.aspx?projectno=FR3885110

In progress is widening I-81 at the Potomac River:
http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/WebProjectLifeCycle/ProjectInformation.aspx?projectno=WA3445221

And ongoing work on the SW quadrant of the Baltimore Beltway I-695.
http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/WebProjectLifeCycle/ProjectInformation.aspx?projectno=BA727513

And the new exit 12 for I-270 is underway:
http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/WebProjectLifeCycle/ProjectInformation.aspx?projectno=MO3515115

As for MDTA the Canton Viaduct project starts this year:

So that explains why Watkins Mill Rd continues west of MD 355. Always thought it was just a pointless stub when I lived there.

For many years there has been a part of Watkins Mill Road on the south side of I-270 as well which ends at MD 117:

Historical Aerials shows the first part of that road in as far back as 1989.  It was extended over the RR tracks much more recently (around 2007).  The north of I-270 part which you referred to was built around 2011. The county has been waiting for the state to build this for a long time.  It's needed to relieve the MD 355/ MD 124 intersection.

There's the Goethals Bridge replacement and Bayonne Bridge raising that are finishing up.  But are those NY or NJ?

For NY, the second span of the Kosciuszko Bridge has begun.  Also the ongoing project to replace several bridges on the Belt Parkway.  And as part of the LaGuardia Airport Terminal B project, a completely new road network is being constructed.

On the NJ side, in addition to the others mentioned, there's the ongoing Wittpenn Bridge (NJ 7) replacement.

Delaware:

  • The US-301 mainline project (toll road)
  • The I-95/US-202 interchange
  • A series of grade-separations on State Route 1
Anything happening on Route 404 or thereabouts?

fillup420

For North Carolina, specifically western NC, definitely the US 321 widening. It has been going for over 10 years, and they are finally 98% done! The last section has 4-lane road markings, but cones still form a 2-lane road. It can only be a matter of time now until 321 is 4 lanes all the way from Lenoir to Boone!

In no particular order, the biggest things in Georgia right now are probably

  • Completion of the I-75/I-575 express lanes
  • I-285/GA 400 interchange reconstruction
  • I-16/I-75 interchange reconstruction
  • Extension of I-85 express lanes
  • Widening of the northernmost freeway portion of GA 400. There are also plans for a new interchange at GA 369, but I'm not sure if that's part of this project or a separate one.

I'm not sure of the status of this proposal/project or if it is all talk, but an I-16/I-95 interchange reconstruction may soon make the list as well. It's possible it is still a ways into a future for now, though.

Western Colorado traveling along I-70 will see a good share of single-lane/crossover construction zones due to bridge and/or pavement rebuilds between Eagle and Palisade.  Surprisingly, I have seen no mention of resurfacing of an extremely rough stretch of I-70 between Parachute and DeBeque.  US-6, which parallels I-70 in that stretch was paved last year and is a much better drive, albeit 20 MPH slower than the interstate.

There was a phase involving I-41 north of the interchange that was killed, but the rest of it will be completed.

Oklahoma: I-35/I-240 Interchange reconstruction which will convert the full cloverleaf into a parclo with two flyovers and widen I-240 to six through lanes over I-35. This project, like many others in Oklahoma, is being strung out into tons of phases and is scheduled for completion in the early 2020s.

I-40 Crosstown/OKC Boulevard: the only remaining work is for the Boulevard which will wrap up the largest construction project in the state's history. The OKC Boulevard will be a four lane Boulevard with an elevated structure built on the west end. Should be finished in a year or two.

I-35/I-44 interchange: starts this year and will rebuild the entire interchange moving the ramps to the right side of the I-35 mainline and joining it together removing the large grassy median. Will widen multiple ramps and rebuild several bridges over the Deep Fork Creek. I'm not sure when it's scheduled for completion.

I-44/I-235 Interchange: will rebuild the entire interchange to a 3 level stack and add C/D lanes. Completion is set for early 2020s.

Kilpatrick Extension: will extend the Kilpatrick turnpike in SW OKC.

EOC Turnpike: eastern Oklahoma county turnpike will be a new 21 mile fully controlled access facility connecting from I-44 to I-40.

I-40 east OKC widening: will widen I-40 from Midwest city to Shawnee to six lanes and replace several interchanges.

There is also a project with US-69 in McAlester that will convert a mile or so to a freeway or something. I can't remember but it's a fairly large project.
