Mauna Loa started erupting on Sunday.  After a new coat of lava for the summit caldera, activity has shifted to the northeast rift zone of the volcano and lava flows are currently heading toward the Saddle Road.

While still a long ways from harming property, if the lava takes out the Saddle Road, that will be a huge inconvenience for residents and visitors on the Big Island.

^ The lava flows have already cut off power and access to the NOAA weather observatory on Mauna Loa, which among other things monitors atmospheric CO2 levels.

Mods: I suggest this and the preceding post be moved to the separate Off-Topic thread about the Mauna Loa eruption, so all current Mauna Loa discussion is in one place.

Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

Quake hits the Eureka area.

(for those who don't click the links: magnitude 6.4, despite the URL implying 6.1)

Aside from the power outage the only real structural issue I'm hearing about a house collapse in Rio Dell.

Looks like there was some minor damage to the old (built in 1911) Fernbridge over the Eel River.

I seriously don't know how the Fernbridge has managed to survive this long between all the floods and earthquakes it has been through.  Probably the only reason it was retained after the 1964 Christmas Floods was that it was repairable when so many other structures (like the Douglas Memorial Bridge) were not.

Was it rehabbed in the mid-1990s?  Its substructure and superstructure ratings improved from 'Poor' to 'Satisfactory' and 'Fair' (respectively) between the 1995 and 1998 inspections.

I believe that was the last time it has been rehabilitated.  Quite the achievement getting a fair or satisfactory rating out of a structure as old as the Fernbridge.

I see Kilauea decided late last week that one month was entirely too long to go without spewing lava.
Back to the arduous task of trying to fill the 2018 caldera with lava.

Note this is one of many buildings that collapsed in Turkey. In some cases there are buildings that collapsed while there were rescue operations.

The Turkey quake is a searing indictment of architectural practices in that country.
