So, there are some things that are soon to happen when this comes around. Just a bit worried.

When I turned 18, HS graduation had already taken place, I had done a summer job as an AV tech at $2 an hour and was working at stocking shelves at night for a discount grocery store for $1.65 an hour.

Gas was less than 30 cents a gallon.  It was the last of the Good Old Days as it turned out.  The Yom Kippur War came in October, our frenemies the Saudis led an OPEC embargo, the Soviets blocked cease fire attempts and then when the war went in favor of Israel, they threatened to invade with 250.000 paratroopers.  We increased our Defcon level and were on the precipice of a nuclear was as the Israeli army was within 25 miles of capturing Cairo and Damascus.

Funny but sad to think as you are about to turn 18 that the world is in a mess and some things are still expensive while minimum wage has less purchasing power than it did for me back in 1973.  Hope you can survive the rest of your life!

I have a birthday this year too!!

My next one (next year) is what I call a "speed limit birthday." I guess it could also be an "audiophile birthday" if you were to go downstairs here and see the collection of 7-inch records.

I do hope you have an adequate supply of plastic or metal inserts...

Thanks all! I plan to purchase a handgun sometime within that time frame, I am still trying to read up and understand Arkansas' legislative jargon. So, until then, it is just a dream!

Nope.  :-P Arkansas is a constitutional carry state, so in theory I won't need a permit... I am unsure of your state (since I do not live in Connecticut, but I have heard it's a beautiful state!)

Move 2,400 miles from home a week after your birthday, change of scenery never hurt anyone once the parental units no longer have control.

Where shall I go? If I could go 2,400 miles in any direction I would, but there are resource constraints associated with that kind of movement. Would you have the means to sponsor me in that venture? :bigass:

All I really have planned is to go register to vote :-/ That's it for now. I do plan to find a rent house around town, my dad is explaining it would be best to invest that money (in its accumulated form), instead of filling someone else's bank account with it. (He isn't wrong). I am kinda stuck as far as that plan goes...

Hey you could always enlist in the military once you graduate, that would sure give you the resources to move somewhere different than where you are now....granted if that's what you want.  I didn't move when I turned 18 but rather a week after my graduation, I bailed out of Michigan for Arizona....suffice to say I had to save quite a bit to make that trip.  A move could be done if you really want it to be.

Beautiful state, but hold on to your wallet.  We're not quite as strict on gun control in The People's Republic of Connecticut as NY and MA are.  Have to be 21, no felonies or domestic violence convictions of any kind, complete an 8 hour certification course including practice firing, background check, picture, 2 forms of ID, and all fees get you a carry permit.  There was a backdoor gun control measure to quadruple permit renewal fees, but that never made it through the legislature.  And yes, we have the two senators who love using tragedy to advance their agenda to abolish the Second Amendment.  In reality, we do have red oases, but the three giant blue blobs known as Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport control the election.

Technically cisgender men and transgender women.  Transgender men can't register even if they want to.

Or, at least, I should be. Hopefully.

There are some lyrics from a song titled "Father To Son", done by Queen in their second album that you will experience if you live long enough.  Here they are:

Take this letter that I give you,
Take it sonny, hold it high
You won't understand a word that's in it
But you'll write it all again before you die

That song had a powerful impact on me when I was 19.  It is so true.  Ponder it now so you'll have a chance to do better as the decades pass than we did and in turn you can give the same gift to your children (should you have any) and they in turn can go into adulthood with an even bigger leg up on all that is to come.

I have no idea what "cisgender" means (I could look it up but am not inclined to do so), but here is what the Selective Service website says. I don't know whether this means the same thing as what you said. (I note it doesn't say anything about people who change their sex.)

QuoteTRANSGENDER PEOPLE

Individuals who are born female and changed their gender to male are not required to register. U.S. citizens or immigrants who are born male and changed their gender to female are still required to register.

OPM notes that "transgender" refers to people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from the sex assigned to them at birth (e.g. the sex listed on an original birth certificate). The OPM Guidance further explains that the term "transgender woman" typically is used to refer to someone who was assigned the male sex at birth but who identifies as a female. Likewise, OPM provides that the term "transgender man" typically is used to refer to someone who was assigned the female sex at birth but who identifies as male.

Well, good thing I am just me! I was actually looking into registering to vote and the SSS today. I need a state ID made for voting though.

Does that mean you don't have a drivers license yet? For a member of this forum, I am shocked.
My dad talked me out of it, plus I don't have a job (damn it! It's tough getting a job in this shit-hole of Fort Smith) for the insurance, my sister bought a car for the trip between Fort Smith and Arkansas Tech. The insurance for just liability alone was $130/mo! So for now, until I need to go greater distances, I'll wait. I can use public transit or bike in less trafficed areas. I've been in the process of studying electronic maps of cities (through the Arkansas GIS Office), one of those maps is of Fort Smith.

Getting a drivers' license for millennials isn't as much of a rite of passage as it was for those of generations past.  I know when I turned 16, I was jonesing to get mine.  Turned 16 in November, but I didn't get it till the next July, but back in those days, anyone who was 16 could drive with an adult who was licensed for a specific amount of time, so my mom let me drive all the time.   I probably drove at least 1000 miles before I got my license (that includes driving golf carts around my dad's business, plus my dad let me drive once when I was 14. )

I never said it was due to me being a millennial, but rather due to expense nowadays. I'd be happy to have a car, but maybe once I get my finances figured out.

Cost is, in fact, the main reason Millennials and the iGeneration both are less enthusiastic about cars.  Millennials came of age in the middle of the recession, and so often couldn't afford cars, then got used to just doing without them.  Both generations are affected by graduated licensing laws making driving less prestigious in high school as well (strangely, these laws usually are based by age and not driving experience, even though studies have shown that age is in no way related to teenage driving safety).

With that I'd say the older the more reckless. But, even that depends (despite the sterio-type)

While not directed at me specifically, I thought I would note that despite the fact that I myself am turning 18 years old in less than a month, I have no driver's license. A few short years ago, I was driving with a permit, and I was doing good - but then, my mental illnesses started sharply getting worse, and eventually I was put on a tranquilizing medication (that also causes tremors and more), among other things. Needless to say, my driver's permit has expired long ago, and I am legally no longer able to drive in any way. In these times, the collective effects of all my mental and physical health issues make me personally practically unable to drive. As a younger person, I thought it would be unheard of for even some roadgeeks to have no driver's license (due to our interests and such), but now I know otherwise, especially from my own experience. You would be surprised at the number of us roadgeeks that actually don't happen to drive.

I'm 18, and I don't have a driver's license either. I know the local bus system very well, though. In addition, the bus system is free for UMass Lowell students (and I am one).

I love the way you put it! I could drive (I want to), but I substitute that with knowledge of how things are done within my state and maps. I have begun to make signs in Inkscape! To me, driving isn't to big of a deal because I ride shotgun all the time!

In my town, you can't survive without a car.  The nearest rail service is at least 15-20 minutes away, and there is one bus per hour that has one stop in our town that makes a run to a regional transportation hub about 15 minutes away.  Our town doesn't even have its own cab service; Uber and Lyft have relieved that somewhat.  The rail service does offer connections to NYC, but getting to Boston by rail is almost impossible.  The rail service will eventually offer commuter service to Hartford, New Haven, and Springfield; but by the time you get to the station and wait for the train, you could drive to one of those places.  The nearest Greyhound terminal is also about 15 minutes away and requires taking the local bus to get there.

I guarantee, there are people in your town without a car, and they survive.  I've lived in a town without any public transportation at all, while my wife worked out of town, and I managed.  A bicycle, asking for rides, hitchhiking, your own two feet:  there are possibilities that most people don't really consider but are certainly possible.

I would agree, I have a commuter bike, that thing "could" go cross-country. So, I certainly have options outside of owning a car. But, it would most likely be cheaper owning a car rather than taking a taxi, to say Little Rock from Fort Smith. All-in-all, I do get around quite well! :bigass:

Well, I turned 18 a few short months ago, and I'm surviving  :D
I assume the one major difference is that you're still in school, while I graduated at 17 this past June. Correct me if I'm wrong there. Anyways, I wouldn't stress too much. And cheers on being born in 1999, best year ever

As the fourth person from my immediate age group (after 1, adventurenumber1, and the OP) to post to this thread, I'm... well, shocked, to say the least... that the others dont have drivers licenses. I got mine as soon as possible, but perhaps I'm underestimating the trend away from doing so. Still, I don't know what I'd do  without one now :wow:

So this thread has been an interesting eye opener!
The good thing about that year, I was able (as a child) to experience a lot of TV shows, like the A-Team BEFORE it's re-runs were taken off air. There were other cartoons BEFORE they got remade into shit like Teen Titans (The one well before 2012 (correct me if wrong)). But, you get the point! Also, movie were awesome, like Nemo! We watched that movie countless times!

Let the thread proceed...
Seems like my age group is a common one. Would be interesting to hear others speak up on the license matter.
Why must you obsess over weird post count nonsense? Is there a meaning to this? I don't think I will be mature enough to drive in 2 years.

It's honestly not that big of a deal, it's a matter of choice... I know plently of people that also got their license to drive later in life.

I didn't think it was a shocker regarding the matter. :-D

Depends on your definitions. He is more rude and vulgar than you, but he also posts a lot less frequently than you. And he is somewhat of an expert on certain roadgeek topics, especially historical routings (whence comes his username).

You tend to write a large number of content-less posts and seem to have little roadgeek knowledge to contribute. He tends to alternate between insulting troll posts and valuable information pertinent to a topic.

I have been wondering whether other people perceive me as being fine. I generally don't write more than a few sentences per post unless I'm making a list, and my road knowledge is mostly limited to my area. I know Takumi once said that I was gradually becoming like a certain other poster (I still don't know if he meant Roadgeekteen or NE2).

I think you are perfectly fine. As a matter of fact, I think you are incredibly mature and intelligent for your age. Also, I've never gotten the impression that you didn't have all that much knowledge on roads - the opposite seemed true, at least to me.

I don't even have a clue what people think of me - I try my best, but because I am severely mentally ill, I may do some strange crap sometimes, which may make me look like I came straight out of a mental hospital.  :ded:

I do not have that much knowledge on roads yet, mainly because 1) I am still very young, and 2) I am very, very slow at learning things, even if it is what I am most interested in. But I am always becoming more knowledgeable and experienced, and what information on roads and such that I know at any given moment, I take in deeply and love it immensely, and I try to contribute as high quality material as I can.

Getting my dl was so important to me that I took drivers ed at school & gave up my summer play for drivers ed. Do they still offer drivers ed at schools? I always was very anxious to drive (I dont know why :hmmm:) Most of my jobs have involved driving, pizza delivery, newspaper delivery, taxi cab, 20 yr truck driver. After 20 yrs of living in a truck except for 2 days a month at home :banghead: I've lost the will to drive as much. Tho in my younger daze I would come home in the truck then pack the car & drive 500-1000 miles for vacation, driving to Detroit to see family or drive to the Smoky Mtns to chill out in a cabin alone. Obviously I dont mind being alone for long periods of time. I'm that loner that you hear about that sometimes cracks up & does something bizarre............

BOO!!!!!!

Yes, there is still Driver's Ed offered in most (if not all) schools (still). I know Greenwood, AR School District offers the chances for Driver's Ed.

They offer Driver's Ed at least at Dalton High School. I took the course in 9th Grade (2014-2015), when I was still driving (and had just gotten my permit), and I even got a 99 in the class. It was a very good educational experience for improving one's driving skills, experience, and knowledge. IIRC, my Driver's Ed teacher said that at some point in the beginning of the 2000's, the state of Georgia stopped offering Drivers Ed courses at their public schools, but as of several years ago they have been brought back as it has been proven that students being offered the class are less likely to get in wrecks and such.

Also, here is a treat - my binder cover from that class, which I drew and colored myself..  ;-)

I know you're trying to keep your threads on the rails, and rightly so.
But, I find it a bit depressing that your standards are so high. I don't think it's necessary to express dissatisfaction every time there's the slightest deviation from the topic, especially in the off-topic board.
There's only so much that can be said about the original topic. I'd say take what comes; it's not like this is spiraling towards a thread lock or anything. And if it was, that's no reflection on you personally. Most good threads (this one included, probably) don't end with a lock. Believe it or not, there can be happy endings to threads around here.

(IMO)
I think his is asking for a lock in that post.

I got my license as soon as I could. My school didn't offer driver's ed, which is a shame because I'm sure that I would've really enjoyed that class. I got my licence in June of 2014, and now over three years down the road, I have my CDL and I drive a bus for work.

Seriously, after all these pages of replies, no one said "happy birthday" on his actual birthday? Sorry I missed saying it yesterday, but I wasn't online, so I'll say it now. Congrats on becoming an adult
Thanks, we went bowling at Bowling World around town. We had fun!

Next Up: 21 and 25 :bigass: :-D

I truly had intentions and plans to wish you a happy birthday on that exact day, but I simply forgot, and so I do apologize for that.

But now I will say, Happy Birthday and congratulations on being 18 now, man!!

  :bigass:

I will get there myself on November 13th, in just two short weeks.

We lost my Social Security card, we have a .pdf ss5 form complete, we just need to print it off and take it with us. Would the Arkansas Workforce halp or no? There's a Social Security office on Dallas St.

We'll get it! :bigass:

The best thing I remember about turning 18 was being able to stay in the swimming pool during rest period.  My birthday was in the middle of summer, and I went swimming pretty much every day.

It'll be nice to do that once we start travelling, again.

Should be easy. When I renewed my drivers license, I was asked if had registered. Also if I was an organ donor.
