CA 84/Dumbarton Bridge

On my recent Bay Area trip I had only only bridge crossing of San Francisco Bay to complete; the Dumbarton Bridge.  My approach to the Dumbarton Bridge was westbound on CA 84 from I-880.  Really I kind of found the Dumbarton Bridge to be the most bland of the crossings of San Francisco Bay, the modern design sure isn't a pleasing aesthetic (odd how it works somehow the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge) to the eye.  The road surface quality of CA 84 past the tollbooth was pretty poor and is sorely in need of repair.

Hi Max: some background info about the Dumbarton Bridge for you:  the span in use today replaced an old two lane lift span bridge in 1979 that had been in use since Jan., 1927.  It was originally built with private funds and was privately owned until the state of California bought it from the owners in 1951, and was the first automobile bridge across the bay.  The original toll booth was at the lift span itself, not on the Coyote Hills as it is today.  During the Great Depression, people actually walked across the span as well as rode horses to reach their destinations on the other side!  This structure was finally removed in 1984.  For a view of the first structure, check out the 1979 Times-Life coffee table book titled San Francisco.  Addenum: construction on the new span began in 1979, and opened in Oct. 1982.
