CA 63
« on: October 11, 2017, 05:40:55 PM »

Did a full route clinch of CA 63 north from CA 99 to CA 180, the photos are up:

https://flic.kr/s/aHsm5WaijA

Before I write my road blog I can confirm that at least northbound that CA 63 jumps off of Noble Street in Visalia for about half of a mile onto the CA 198 freeway.  The signage is especially clear for northbound 63 traffic to use the 198 freeway, not so much for southbound from what I recall on Mineral King venue.  Most of the historical stuff in the upcoming road blog with all be probably from the whole J21/Boyd Drive thread.

If I recall correctly the last big debate we had about CA 63 was regarding two things:

1.  When SSR 63 was first signed in the field in the 1950s from US 99 to Orosi?
2.  Was SSR 63 ever truly actually signed over LRN 130 east out of Orosi to SSR 65

Really I'd like to resolve the two questions above if possible before writing a new road blog on CA 63, but I'll notate the questions if it really comes down it.  I think at this point really the only thing that is going to get some conclusive answers is some solid photographic proof, although I do recall Sparker saying for sure 63 was on LRN 130 in the early 1960s?

With that all in mind here is the rough cut of the notes I took regarding CA 63 from the J21/LRN 130 thread along with some new map research items:

By 1950 the state highway map shows 1950 CA 63 is signed from US 99 to Orosi:

1949 State Highway Map
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239570~5511880:Road-Map-of-the-State-of-California?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=57&trs=86
1950 State Highway Map
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239567~5511878:Road-Map-of-the-State-of-California?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=55&trs=86

A 1950 Topo Map shows CA 63 on LRN 130 east of Orosi:

1950 Topo Map Showing CA 63 heading east of Orosi to CA 65:
https://historicaerials.com/?layer=T1950&zoom=15&lat=36.545&lon=-119.261

As well as a Goshua Map I found from 1956:

1956 Shell Map Showing CA 63 running to CA 65
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~212044~5500195:Shell-Highway-Map-of-California--so?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:california%2Bhighway%2Bmap;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=24&trs=202

1964 shows LRN 130 renumbered to LRN 63 east of Orosi indicating the route was likely not signed at the time.  LRN 132 north of Orosi is renumbered to LRN 226:
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239525~5511850:State-Highway-Map,-California,-1964?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=27&trs=86

CAhighways has CA 63 being pulled back from US 99 to CA 137 in Tulare by 1965:
http://www.cahighways.org/057-064.html#063

The 1966 State Highway Map shows the modern alignment of CA 63 proposed north of Orosi but LRN 63 still extending east from the city:
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239519~5511846:State-Highway-Map,-California,-1966?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=23&trs=86

The former routing of LRN 130 east of Orosi disappears as a state highway off the 1967 state highway map while the alignment of modern CA 63 north to CA 180 still isn't finished:
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239516~5511844:State-Highway-Map,-California,-1967?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=21&trs=86

By the 1969 state highway map CA 63 is shown complete to CA 180:
https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~239513~5511842:State-Highway-Map,-California,-1969?sort=Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No&qvq=q:caltrans;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort%2CPub_Date%2CPub_List_No%2CSeries_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=19&trs=86

Wrote the CA 63 road blog based off all known historical information.  I will add a end note to the blog if any new or clarified information comes forward regarding 63:

Something tells me that it's a locally fabbed sign placed by, in all likelihood, the city of Visalia.  Besides the extra-heavy (albeit inconsistent) white border, the letters in the state name above the numbers are vertical rather than perpendicular to the state-name arc such as found in state-deployed signage.  Of course the "ROUTE" under the digits automatically renders the sign pretty damn weird!  Someone call D6, show them the image, and ask WTF?  :poke:

Fresno does the same thing but usually sticks their signs on streets connecting to a freeway, but I've never seen a shield with "route" in it.  Seems like that shield has been present for a long time on 63 north directing traffic onto Noble Avenue:

Which is interesting because the Caltrans spec BGS makes it clear you need to turn on Noble to stay on 63.

Made an update to the CA 63.  Turns out current CA 63 between Orange Cove and CA 180 was part of the initial route of Signed County Route J19.  J19 can be seen north of Orange Cove ending at CA 180 on a 1966 Goshua Highway Map.

Originally J19, when fully signed, was a major "cutoff" route for traffic from southward 99 (US and CA) to General Grant and Kings Canyon, particularly after 99 became a free-flow road north of Bakersfield.  Its southern terminus was at CA 198 immediately east of the 99 interchange -- in fact, there was a "to J19" sign on NB 99 up until Tulare County started removing the pentagons in the late '80's; control cities of Dinuba and Orange Cove were listed on the roadside BGS.  If the destination was along the eastern portion of CA 180, one could remain on 99 much longer and avoid both the slog through Lindsay and Exeter on CA 65 as well as the myriad of hairpin turns on SSR 65 (later 69 and then 245) south of 180.  Somewhat longer in terms of mileage but a hell of a lot faster than a straight shot up 65/245.

Fresno County was still signing J19 until the Blossom Trail signs were replaced last year.  I captured one of the J19 shields approaching Orange Cove on CA 63 back in 2017:
