CA 183
« on: October 21, 2017, 12:57:30 AM »

I've been working on photo albums and road blogs all evening.  I drove all of CA 183 from Castroville to Salinas this morning, so far all I have is the photo album complete:

Given that I got through the larger road blogs/historical pages on CA 25 and the San Juan Grade I'm anticipating hitting this one tomorrow.  For the time being the route photos ought to suffice for anyone curious as to what 183 looks like.

The pictures just remind me how silly the south end of CA 183 -- "doubling back" toward northbound US 101 via the old 101 in-town alignment -- actually is.  Whoever in District 5 who had the foresight to place "TO CA 183" trailblazer BGS attachments to the NB US 101 Market Street exit should be given a medal.  I know Caltrans absolutely hates adopting new stretches of urban street, but in this case swapping Market just west of 101 for the current 183 alignment would have been a more useful approach.

The crappy thing is that 183 is actually a pretty hand crossing across Salinas Valley aside from that weird turn on Main Street.  You can't even turn South onto US 101 from Main Street which is a huge problem with route continuity.  I ended up using Laurel Drive to get to southbound US 101.  156 or 129 makes more sense for people heading from Castroville or Santa Cruz to reach US 101 northbound over 183.  The only real advantage 183 would have is southbound US 101 traffic.

IIRC isn't that portion of Main Street that carries Route 183 part of a US 101 business route?  That might be why that was chosen for the final mile of 183 (though it isn't a particularly good routing, to concur with the previous comments in this thread).

Interesting that in the area you have two situations of near-intersections between state routes that don't ever cross: 183 and 68 in Salinas, and further north there's 129 and 152 in Watsonville.

At least in Wastonville there is "To" signage directing traffic between both routes via Main Street.  Neither 68 or 183 have such signage which would be a natural fit to install at Salinas Street.
