Elements of SH 20 (Doniphan Dr) corridor study go to the public this month

The meetings will take place on January 22 and 23 at Lincoln Middle School and Canutillo High School respectively.

EL PASO - Community members are invited to provide feedback on recommended improvements for Doniphan Drive. The Corridor Plan encompasses Doniphan Drive (SH 20) from the Texas/New Mexico state line to Racetrack Drive. These latest meetings are the third series before final recommendations are made. Identical study information will be presented at each gathering. These meetings are in an open house format with maps, plan details and animations, and will be staffed by TxDOT and consultants ready to answer questions in English and Spanish.


"We welcome people to drop by during this open house and get a sense of what is being proposed and stay as long as they would like,"  said TxDOT District Engineer Bob Bielek, DPA, P.E. "These public platforms provide the community an opportunity to learn about upcoming construction projects at their leisure and make an impact. It is important they be informed and have their questions answered ahead of any project starting."

Improvements in the plans for the 15-mile stretch include a median, a shared use path, drainage improvements, a roundabout in Vinton, a "High —T"  allowing thru traffic to proceed at Talbot, lane expansions, aesthetics and continuous lighting.

Sets of improvements are divided in phases as they relate to future transportation and development needs along the corridor through 2040.

Interesting that they (txdot) are looking at this before six laning parallel interstate 10.   I-10 from the split with I-25 on the south side of las Cruces NM was six laned for 16 miles south to the TX border at Anthony five or six years ago.   Doniphan Road is a death trap though, with a four lane undivided cross section from roughly Artcraft Road to Anthony.   Why this corridor wasn't rebuilt already is a mystery.  A cross section similar to the mid nineties rebuild of North Loop Road in Southeast El Paso would be ideal - raised median, concrete pavement, and good geometrics (something that is lacking often in borderland design in current times)
