Some folks are quick to blame this on Amazon, but I wonder if it's more from big boxes like DSW.  After all, you can't try shoes on first, when getting them online (at least for now... who knows?)

Their parent, a private equity firm, claims the company is deeply in debt.  IMO, it sounds like another Fast Eddie.

Payless Shoes: Why pay more?  Quality, perhaps?

They've been teetering on the edge of the cliff for months.  Got one in my town in the same plaza that once housed a Radio Shack, Zayre's/Ames, and Fashion Bug.
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

If dollar stores are thriving, why wouldn't Payless also be thriving?

It's reasonable why they closed. That can't make a profit because you don't need to pay to get their shoes.

You mean just get them elsewhere?
Nope. All the price tags say "payless" which means they are free.

It wasn't really intended as such, I just meant "this was so dumb, you didn't even have to read it to feel dumber," but yeah, that works too.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Roadgeekteen. I've always been irked by businesses calling themselves "Payless".

Also, the quality of shoes were rather poor.

Not 20 years ago.  I used to by shoes from them -- they had a great pair of simple brown casual shoes that would last a few years.  Once they stopped carrying them, I stopped shopping there -- quality did take a nosedive somewhere in the early 2000s.

Local store here was very busy Sunday, the first day they had signs posted. It's not been busy at all since then. We'll see what happens this coming weekend.

Tangentially related, the local Rogers Jewelry has closed.. They've been going out of business since November. They were still open yesterday, but today they had signs stating they had closed.

Hello, Sue.

Someone posted the "Who What or Where" video, and it went from there. The last reply I saw was the one immediately after mine; I went to bed, and it was gone in the morning.
Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.
