How is US 79 routed between Shearerville and Memphis?

Old maps showed it following US 70 to I-55. Current maps show only US 70 running along this road. Signage used to show US 79 headed north from US 70 to I-40 but there were no signs directing US 79 traffic to follow I-40 east. Current signage shows US 79 ending at US 70 and not reappearing until the Tennessee border. Does it officially follow I-40 or US 70? Google Maps shows it following I-40 but I believe Google Maps about as much as I believe politicians.

As of 2013 there actually was a sign pointing US 79 onto I-40 east. Has this been removed?

AHTD maps say US 79 ends at US 70. They don't give a shit about the part in Tennessee.

AASHTO's 1989 log says it uses US 70. The only relevant change was in 1976, when the 70-79 split was moved from Lehi to Shearerville.

If it weren't for the signage, I'd say it clearly uses US 70.

That sign wasn't there the last time I was there.

If it indeed was moved to I-40, when was it?

Personally, if US 70 is going to follow the surface road, so should US 63 and 79.

Which was? The sign appears to have been there in 2007 (if you move to the southbound to eastbound ramp you can see the back of it).

It probably wasn't explicitly moved.

When I drove through there in December it was still there. Of course once you are on I-40 it disappears into the AHTD black hole of US routes.

And only US 70 runs through downtown West Memphis. At least US 79 could have followed US 70 through town, but US 63 probably couldn't have, and AASHTO probably wouldn't have allowed AHTD to route it onto AR 191 to go into town.
