Tonight and tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of the big, surprise northeastern snowstorm of October 4, 1987. My house in Amsterdam, NY, probably had 6 inches of snow, which is no big deal unless it's heavy, wet snow on trees still with full canopies of leaves. We didn't lose power but many outlying areas which received much more snow suffered extensive tree damage and many places were without power for weeks.

It was the earliest measureable snowfall in inland CT since records were kept in 1905. Only a trace fell at Bradley Airport and in the valleys, but up to 9" of heavy wet snow fell in portions of the Litchfield Hills. It was nothing compared to the damage that would take place 24 years later with the October 29, 2011 storm that left most of the state without power for up to a week.

I remember that storm well. Lost power for five days in Columbia County. Cold indoors with no heat. (50 degrees inside!!)
The day after my parents got married!
