The rules for this game are very complex. I understood the A rule to come into force only if the name starts and ends with an A.

That's the way I remembered the rule at first too, but I was wrong.

Here's my translation of the basic rules:

You should be able to make a chain out of every place name, except that a final letter A is a wild card.

Example chain
[CALGARY]
[YORK][LINCOLN]
[KALAMAZOO] ** has to start with K, not N
[OTTAWA][KANSAS CITY]
[YOUNGSTOWN] ** could have started with an A or a Y
[NORTH NEWTON]
[NUEVO NACAPA][SALTILLO]
[ABILENE] ** could also have started with O
[EDMONTON]

Actual pictures only, actual town names only, don't go twice in a row unless 48 hours have elapsed.

Luke's signs come to the rescue.

Nunica -> Alexandria

Ft Belvorir->Rathdrum, with the most pointless instance of signing an adjacent state's highway I can think of.

Ontario => Oregon City ("Boring" is a separate community on OR 212, much as jokesters like to pretend it's part of the city name on line 2):

Good luck. (Massachusetts, from alpsroads)

Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

Xenia, OH would work. (I drove through there a few days ago, too bad I didn't take a picture.)

Xenia, you say?  Essex -> Xenia.  I-71.  June 4, 2003.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

Invoking the OP's rule 4, Bend => Deadhorse:

Deadhorse to Eastman (QC 112 and A-10)

If someone can get a B, C, or P into the game, that would be good. Those are rare ending letters, but not that rare to begin with.

Actually, you have a C ending letter in the post preceding yours (and many other Quebec place names ending in "Lac"), though that name wasn't put into play. Fond du Lac, WI too.

You can go across the pond to find a Zagreb. Of course, Z is not a real common ending letter, either.

I'll put a P into the game, if I'm awake (and not beaten to the punch) when someone posts a name ending in R.

In my collection of "welcome to" type signs, I have nothing ending in B, Quebec and Taghkanic (NY) ending in C, and  Lilliwaup (WA) and Winthrop (MA) ending in P.  I don't have an easy way to search my collection for other road signs with town/city names ending in specific letters, so I might have more.

Ogden => Norwood (MN), kind of wasting the "Y" opportunity for the town known for rebate processing:

NorwooDillon - pasted on as an afterthought after somebody in Dillon lobbied to have it added.

How did this happen??  The name of the town is Norwood Young America, Minnesota.  Norwood hasn't been a separate town since the 1990s.  The next town name in the chain should have started with A, not D.
