Can you start a challenge even though you don't have a photo to kick it off?  I want to create this challenge:

June 12, 2018:  The ABC River challenge.  Post signage for a river whose name starts with A, then post rivers that start with the next successive letter of the alphabet.  Creeks, streams, brooks, runs, and other flowing bodies of water are also acceptable.

That would be more suitable for a long-term game than a one-day event. Once you get to Z, reset to A and don't reuse the same stream.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

I didn't think it would be appropriate for a long-term challenge, because there is no way we're getting through X, Y, and Z

Still could be a multi-day challenge.

I don't normally take river crossing photos, but I've already dredged up from my 2012 photo archives a G___, an L____, an M____, and an S___.

And also, from 2007, a D___ to continue the chain:

Dangerous River (at the end of a forest road out of Yakutat AK -- the "dangerous" part is icebergs from glaciers upstream):

I don't know about our chances for X and Z, but I have the Yukon River standing by if we get that far.

Sure; such a Challenge would remain open until someone does post a photo, or the calendar day ends, whichever is later.

You could make it an open-ended Challenge, as long there's a clear sequence and a predictable ending point (such as the alphabet). I normally prefer not to start a new side Challenge while there are others still open (of which we've got at least one), but that's not a set rule or anything.

Well, it's monthly recap time...I guess...I mean there were only like 3 Challenges this whole month. :-P

Actually...

June 1, 2018: The first photo you ever posted on the aaroads forum.
June 2, 2018: Two locations on the same sign that begin and end with the same letters.
June 3, 2018: All four cardinal directions in one photo. Bonus points if they're all on one assembly or sign.
June 8, 2018: A city/town and a modification of it on the same sign or assembly.
June 9, 2018:  Haha it's 6-9 the sex number dude bro man dawg cuz.  Post routes that add up to 69, or have a difference of 69 when you subtract them.
June 10, 2018:  Meta-ramps!  Post exit ramps off of exit ramps.
June 12, 2018:  The ABC River challenge.  Post signage for a river whose name starts with A, then post rivers that start with the next successive letter of the alphabet.  Creeks, streams, brooks, runs, and other flowing bodies of water are also acceptable. (Next letter up is the letter E.)
June 13, 2018: Sign/road photos with aircraft in the sky.
June 27, 2018: Post a picture/pictures you took on June 27, whether this year or any previous years.

And because I can, here's a challenge for June 27:

QuoteJune 27, 2018: Post a picture/pictures you took on June 27, whether this year or any previous years.

Taken in Indianola, Iowa, on that date in 2018. What's missing here?

QuoteJune 27, 2018: Post a picture/pictures you took on June 27, whether this year or any previous years.

OK, here's an 18-year-old June 27 photo, taken in 2000 on the San Bernardino Freeway.

And here's some eastern Iowa on June 27 only 5 years ago.  Taken on US 6 West and Iowa 28 South.

It's the 28th now, but I wanted to contribute even though it doesn't count.

I took a whole boatload of sign photos on June 27 of 2016, mostly between Columbus, OH and Fort Wayne, IN on the way home from Ohio's capital city.

And now for a new challenge:

QuoteJune 28, 2018: Post photos of the start of a state highway that leads to nowhere.  Post a state highway marker that sits along the alignment of a state highway that starts at another US, Interstate, or state highway, and dead ends without intersecting any other such highways.

Ohio 319 starts at Ohio 118 and dead ends off to the west without intersecting any other highways

OH-319-118WR by Paul Drives, on Flickr

Illinois 155 starts at Illinois 3 and dead ends.  This is an end marker, which counts since it's along IL-155's alignment:

IL-155-WT by Paul Drives, on Flickr

The western segment of CA-169 counts, as it dead ends shortly to the east, even though CA-169 exists on a separate segment to the east.  I imagine a bunch of rural stubs in the mountain west would work great with this challenge.

It does count, because under the monthly recap, all June Challenges would be open through the end of the month.

QuoteAnd now for a new challenge:

Well, typically the monthly recap would itself be the Challenge for June 28th, although I didn't expressly state that this time since I figured the thread was pretty much deceased... :-P

9 is much better than 3!

Hopefully this next month (July) will be even more fruitful. I do have three different challenge ideas in my head currently that I may post within the month. I do still have faith in this thread, and I don't think it's over just yet!  :D

I have no way to know the actual age of almost any of the things in my photos, so I'll just guess that this warning sign on Route 100 in Whitingham is among the oldest road signs in my collection.  Picture is from June 25, 2016.

Original-design Minnesota state highway markers from the late 1920s/early 1930s. Not in the wild though–in the safe confines of my residence. :)

QuoteJuly 2, 2018: TO two or more roads.

Clarification: If it says TO two things, but they are both the same road, it still counts.

Taken two days ago. Haverhill, MA.

If this sign was correct, it would not qualify for this challenge. 4 and 16 begin together. Portsmouth, NH.

Lowell, MA. "TO (495){3}" is a very common sign assembly in Lowell, but most of them aren't unisigns. The Lowell Connector is never mentioned by name on surface roads.
