Title: No-longer-necessary one-way pairs on numbered roads
Post by: US-175 on April 26, 2017, 02:55:53 PM
(Seeing the recent one-way topics here got me thinking about another one-way topic....)

I saw pictures of streetscapes in McLean, TX a while back.  One thing that caught my eye was that the Bus I-40 (old Route 66) section in the downtown area is a one-way pair, with very little traffic.  The very-little-traffic part of course is understandable since I-40 came through town in the late 1960s and took most of the traffic away from the center of town.  But when the one-way pair remains, in an area that has much less reason for it, is it really necessary to have it any longer?  The area in question:

GSV along First St. (WB Bus I-40) ... https://goo.gl/maps/vTb6z5bppxm

I would guess there aren't very many situations like this, but it would be interesting to see what else is out there.

I'm not sure why you would go to the trouble of reconfiguring roadways to make those streets two-way traffic.

US 17 had a one way pair on Post and College Street in the Riverside/Avondale neighborhood in Jacksonville from the 1940s until the 2000s. After i10 was built around 1960  it wasnt needed but it took decades of lobbying by the neighborhood historical association to have us17 routed onto 10 and 95. The streets are two way and really helped the streets become more fitting for older street car suburbs
