Title: What is US 3 like in far northern New Hampshire (near Canada)?
Post by: Roadgeekteen on August 07, 2020, 05:43:42 PM
I'm probably going there latter this summer. What is the road like and what is there to see up there?

Two lanes and near the headwaters of the Connecticut River.  I like Berlin, NH.

It's gorgeous and much longer than I expected. I've been all the way up 93 enough times and have always thought, "Oh there's just a little more to New Hampshire beyond here."  Wrong.

The customs guy gave me instructions to hike to Fourth Connecticut Lake, source of the river, but I had to keep moving. It is possible to straddle the whole of the mighty Connecticut, though, if you know where to look.

I would love to travel all of US 3 myself from Boston to the Canadian Border.  Hope it is sill around in a few years after this chaos dies down as I have yet tackled the rest of NH and I-93 as well as VT highways and ME highways.  Been on them as a kid but never drove them in great lengths gown up as only did NH 9 and 101 back in 2003.

Which?  US-3, Boston, or the Canadian border?

I believe just the other side of the border on QC 257, there is an extremely steep grade (15%) that is almost straight downhill.

There is, and the view from the overlook there straight across to Mont Megantic is breathtaking.

Up 257 a couple miles (or a few km) there is a magnetic hill that is fun.  When we were kids, on one of our many trips we hit that and I still remember my dad reading the sign which was only in French at the time but he knew enough to translate it.  (The magnetic hill is an optical illusion where you think you are rolling uphill but are rolling slightly downhill.)  Somewhere in boxes of old photos and negatives we have a picture of me and my brother shaking hands across the border when we were both much younger on that trip.

I traveled up yesterday. Very nice, exceeded expectations. Didn't get to hike the fourth lake trail though.

Congrats. Surprised by how desolate the last 20 or so miles of US 3 are? Cycling up there for me was awesome, though a long drive to take a bike ride.

Québec has some fun roads.

For example, a sign showing varying grades at a brake-check stop: https://www.google.com/maps/@47.5796693,-70.2135912,3a,15y,266.14h,91.83t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSoeVroH5p4kGxO44lodYqw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
