Title: Closest stretches of road you have NOT clinched
Post by: NWI_Irish96 on September 28, 2016, 01:52:29 PM
From your current residence, what is the closest stretch of road you have NOT clinched in each of the following categories:

Interstate Highway
US Highway
State highway

For me:
Interstate: I-69 between I-64 and IN 68, 98 miles away
US Highway: US 421 between IN 56 and IN 62, 45 miles away
State Highway: KY 2054 between Alt US 60 and KY 1931, 15 miles away

Interstate: I-190 MA
US Highway: US 20 east of Lee
State Highway: MA 2 east of MA 43

That's not very interesting and a result of Albany being so close to the state border, so I tried it with past locations:
Rome, NY:
-Interstate: I-80 west of I-380*
-US Highway: US 7 between US 4 and VT 22A
-State Highway: NY 41 southeast of Skaneateles

Potsdam, NY:
-Interstate: I-93 between Boston and Manchester
-US Highway: US 7 between US 4 and VT 22A
-"State" Highway: QC 132 west of A-15

Rochester, NY:
-Interstate: I-80 west of US 15 (future I-99 is closer)*
-US Highway: US 20A west of NY 246*
-State Highway: NY 238 southeast of Attica*

Sidney, NY:
-Interstate: I-80 west of I-380*
-US Highway: US 11 south of New Milford
-State Highway: NY 10 between NY 8 and Walton*

*Will change by end of year assuming no change in clinching plans

I'm northeast of Baltimore in Harford County and these are my distances, as the crow flies.

Interstate: Maryland's entire I-270, 57 miles away
U.S. Route: U.S. Route 1 between U.S. 40 in west Baltimore and MD-100 near Elkridge, 27 miles away
State Route: Maryland Route 159, 13 miles away

I only clinch interstate highways.

I-781 is the closest, 196 miles.  (Not on the frickin' way to anywhere)
I-190 between its last exit and the Canadian border, 291 miles.
I-95 from Howland to Houlton, ME, 438 miles.
I-94/I-69 from Canadian Border to M-25, 478 miles (cutting through Canada).
I-94, south of I-69, 482 miles (cutting through Canada)
I-94, south of I-696's eastern terminus, 524 miles.
Tie: I-75 south of I-96 / I-96 north/west of I-94, 532 miles.
I-75 south of I-475's southern terminus, 572 miles.
I-270 west of I-71, 585 miles.
I-270 south of I-670's eastern end, 596 miles
I-70, east of I-71, 597 miles
I-70, west if I-71, 600 miles

(Only stretches of I-70 I have left to clinch the entire interstate are east of I-71 to I-270 and west of I-71 to I-670 in Columbus)

Fun exercise.  Edited this a bunch of times since my brain isn't working today.

I-95
US 30
NJ 38

I-95 (8 miles away) I am actually kinda close on clinching.  But there's a stretch in Florida between Daytona & Ft. Lauderdale that I'm missing, and in Maine north of Portland to New Brunswick.

US 30...(6 miles away) Well, not clinching that 3,000 mile road anytime soon.

NJ 38...(17 miles away) Just a small section on its eastern end I've just never happen to drive.

From current residence (Wakefield, MA), closest non-clinched sections of road:

Interstate Highway - I-95 from Augusta ME north - 155 miles away
US Highway - US 20 from Albany NY west - 203 miles away
State Highway - MA 117 from Weston west - 28 miles away

I don't think I was clear in my instructions.  I'm looking for the closest segments of unclinched roads.  If the only parts of I-95 you haven't driven are in Maine and Florida, then your closest unclinched segment is not 8 miles away.  Same with US 30.  You live 6 miles away, but the parts you haven't driven are likely much farther away.

Ah, OK (although amazingly with US 30, not much further!!).

In that case (as the crow flies, which is probably just a little shorter than actual distance)...

I-695 around Baltimore (80 miles)

US 30 near the Philadelphia Zoo (9 miles)

NJ 38 near its eastern end with 206 (22 miles)

This feels like something I should code up in TM, not do by looking at TM maps as I'm doing.  But here's what it looks like for me.  Based in Amsterdam, New York.

I: parts of I-95 north (east) of New Haven, CT, about 165 miles away
US: US 9 south of Kingston, NY, about 90 miles away
State: NY 32 south of Glenmont, about 40 miles away

I-87 south of the Berkshire Connector. (68.5 mi)
US 20 west of NY 22. (51.5 mi)
NH 137 between US 202/NH 124 and NH 101. (33.5 mi)
Distances are as the crow flies from my location in southern Vermont to the closest point of the unclinched section of highway, rounded to the nearest half mile.

From Bakersfield:

State: CA 166
U.S.:  US 395
Interstate:  I-210

I was going to say I-15 until I realized that I never have taken I-210 from I-5 for whatever reason.  CA 166 is just a "meh" highway for the most part and I haven't really had a ton of interest.  The only part of US 395 I haven't been on is north of Spokane.

From my current residence in Delaware County, PA (southwest of Philly)
For sanity reasons, all listed distances are as the crow flies:

I-78 east of I-287 in Bedminster Twp., NJ: 62 miles

US 30 east of Berlin, NJ: 23 miles

PA 611 north of Philadelphia: 14 miles

From my former residence in Marblehead, MA:

I-295 south of RI 37 (Cranston): 60 miles

US 3 north of MA 16 (Arlington/Cambridge): 15 miles

MA 60 west of MA 99 (Malden): 10 miles

Not at all actively trying to accomplish any clinching outside of Ontario, but:
State Highway - MI-136 at Port Huron/Fort Gratiot, 111 km
US Highway - US-12 in Detroit, 191 km
Interstate Highway - I-475 south of I-69 at Flint, 216 km

Within my home province, where I'm making more of an effort:
400-series: no sections remaining to clinch
King's Highway: Highway 144 north of Benny, 619 km
Secondary Highway: Highway 637 west of former highway 69, an even 500 km (weird)

Tough.

I-81 north of the I-78 split (73 miles)
US 30 west of the PA Turnpike (41 miles)
PA 995 south of Kaufman Road (2.5 miles)

Guess I got the closest.

From southwest of Hartford, CT:

Interstate: I-684.  The little connection from the split with SR 984J to I-287 (about 75 miles away). Longer stretch: I-87 from I-84 to US 209 (about 80 miles away).

US Route: US 7 from CT 55 to CT 341 (about 45 miles away)

State Route: CT 17 from CT 103 to the southern junction of CT 22 (about 21 miles away), CT 222 (all but a few feet) (22 miles away)

Interstate - There may be streches of I-94 on the Detroit east side -  I can't remember if I was on all of it.  About 15 miles away.
US - some portion of US-24 in Detroit, 15 or 20 miles
State:  One of the Detroit arterials, maybe part of Grosbeck M-97 about 10 miles away.

Interstate: I-59 south of Fort Payne, AL (95 miles away, straight-line distance)
US: US 29 between South Fulton Pkwy and GA 92 near Union City (17 miles away)
State: GA 6 inside I-285 (13 miles away)

Interstates:  clinched all mileage in CA, OR, WA, NV -- so the nearest would be either of 2 sections of I-15 in Utah, between I-70 at Cove Fort and US 50 near Holden, and between US 50 near Scipio and US 6 near Spanish Fork.  Have done all of I-70/I-80/I-84 in Utah; also missing I-15 north of I-84 (all the way to I-86 at Pocatello, ID).  Most UT trips have been E-W, so the missing portions of I-15 just haven't been in the cards to date.

U.S. highways:  US 395 north of CA 36, all the way to OR 140.  Never been to Alturas; since they severed the old SP Modoc line, never had any reason in recent years to go there (taking RR pix).

CA state highways:  never traveled on CA 108 east of Twain Harte; so never had the pleasure (or grief) of Sonora Pass!  Might do so before I croak, might not.  Never know!  Also, the existing portions of CA 162 between US 101 and I-5 have gone unexplored -- again, never had any reason to go there.

For me:
Interstate Highway: I-95 at the Canadian border near Houlton ME.
US Federal Highway: Alt US 1 near Hamlin ME. US 1 near Van Buren ME for a mainline.
State Highway: ME 229 at the Canadian border near Limestone ME.

However, it will remain the same forever, as the closest one (Alt US 1) is 3,229 miles in a straight line away from me. Amending the categories to freeway, national highway and regional highway (1st and 2nd order), I miss:
Freeway (both national and regional): AP-2 East of the ARA-A1 interchange. Surprisingly, it's A-14 for the toll free category, I thought it would be the 3 miles of A-2 around Fraga that would give me a complete clinch of all toll free freeways in my home region of Aragon.
National road: N-II East of Pina.
Regional road (first order): A-125 West of Ardisa.
Regional road (second order): A-1222.

Bonus: French departmental highway: D 439, just North of the Somport tunnel.

Interstate: I-580 in Nevada (I have been on approximately 60% of it)

US highway: I haven't been on all of US 101 in California yet, or on any of US 199.

State highway: Route 84 west of Route 35.  Route 131 (which I have barely been on)

From Pueblo CO:

I have driven all Interstate Highway mileage in the state. I have clinched end-to-end I-25 and western I-76. On i-70, you have to go east to Kingdom City MO to get to a segment I haven't driven. (Hope to fix that soon).

U.S. routes: I haven't driven the Colorado portion of U.S. 84 at all, and I'm missing pieces of several other routes (6, 36, 34, 385). All I'm missing of U.S. 40 are the annoying local street segments around Denver; I've driven the independent segments west of Empire to Utah, and east of Limon to Kansas. U.S. 24 isn't even continuous, so I'm missing one or more hanging end frontage road segments along I-70.

State: My guess is that closest one is the south end of CO-167, because I have had no reason to go to Fowler Airport.

Mine are pretty pathetic given that I live up toward the northern end of Manhattan:

Interstate: Sheridan Expressway (I-895) in the Bronx
US: Broadway (US 9) between I-95 and the Broadway Bridge
State: Bergen Boulevard (NJ 63)

State Highway: MD 229 (52 miles)

Interstate:I-40  100 miles (I have only been as far west as I-25 on it.)
US Mainline: US-17 I can walk to it in 5 minutes (I do have all of it in NC and SC, but lack substantial portions in VA,GA and FL)
State Highway: NC-43/NC-55 (both pretty much 5 miles from my house, I have only used them locally)

Because I am a 46 year old moron I need to modify this. The closest Interstate to me that I have not clinched is I-95 at 79 miles. I have been from the southern terminus in Miami to the Throgs Neck Bridge exit in NYC, never any farther than that. Not sure what I was thinking when I first answered  :pan:

Interstate: 5
Only Salem to Ashland remaining. Hopefully I'll get up to Oregon soon. 680 may actually be closer, and I've never been on the Benicia-Martinez Bridge.

US: 50
101 is the only one remotely close to me, but I've clinched that. Historically, the closest is either 40 or 99, both of which I haven't clinched.

State: either 25 or 35
I really should get on both, because they're both very scenic. Except for 1, most of the state routes near me are pretty short and were just clinched through random drives on errands.

Interstate: I-435 (Need the segment between I-70 in Kansas and I-29 near the airport)
US Highway: US 50 (Literally down the block, but need a lot of segments on both ends)
State: I guess K-10, even though it's in the next state over? It's actually closer than the closest Missouri highway I haven't clinched, which would be MO 9.

Not even going to try to guess a Kentucky state route, because there are so many, and lots of them dead-end.

As for US, my best guess would be US 22 heading east and US 42 heading north out of Cincinnati.

Interstate? The new I-69 in southwest Indiana.

For me in SW suburbs of Jacksonville FL closest non-clinched would be:

I -16 between Dublin,GA and i95 ~120 miles

US 82 between Waycross, GA and I-95 ~75 miles

SR 120(NE 8th Ave if I recall) in Gainesville FL ~40 miles

I've clinched Idaho already, so"

Interstate: I-80 from Winnemucca, NV to Elko, NV (~250 miles away)
U.S. Route: the branch of US-30 through Huntington, OR off I-84 (84 miles away)
State Highway: Oregon Route 414 (160 miles away)

When I moved from Helena, Montana back in June, it was a bleaker picture, having clinched the entire state highway systems in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming. At that point, it was:

Interstate: I-80 west of Salt Lake (568 miles away)
U.S. Route: US 191 south of the Wyoming line (517 miles away)
State Route: Utah SR 23 (394 miles away)

That's part of why I had to move!

Interstate: I-293 north of Exit 1
US route: US 1 near MA 97 (I haven't been on US 1 between Danvers and Newburyport, and this section is closest to me)
State route: MA 28 north of MA 110, just a few miles away
Title: Re: Closest stretches of road you have NOT clinched

Interstate: The spur routes of I-895 near Baltimore (missing a smidgen of each) or the stub end of I-70 inside the Baltimore Beltway (whether the latter is or will be decommissioned is irrelevant to me because I count it as part of I-70 either way). In terms of a full Interstate not travelled at all, I-795 in Maryland.

US route: US-1 between Laurel and Baltimore

State route: About three miles of MD-414 inside the Capital Beltway.

Yes, I live in Virginia, but since my house is about six miles from the Maryland state line on the Wilson Bridge (intentionally ignoring that sliver of DC), many segments in Maryland are closer than many segments in Virginia. BTW, for purposes of the "state route" issue I interpret the question as referring to primary routes for Virginia, because otherwise it'd be both trivial and too difficult to figure out because I'm not about to try to figure out which streets are VDOT System streets and which are HOA-owned in surrounding neighborhoods.

From Valpo:

Interstate: I'm missing a mile of I-57 in the far southern suburbs that I bypassed due to traffic, 35 miles away.
US Highway: US 20 around Michigan City, 17 miles away.
State Highway: SR 55 in Merrillville, 16 miles away.

From Davenport:

I-39 north of Mendota, IL, 80 miles away.
US 30 east of Morrison, IL, 37 miles away (or US 52 north of Sabula, IA, 40 miles away. Not paying too much attention to the accuracy of my distances)
State: There's a couple that are around 25 miles away: IL 92 east of the IL 82 intersection, IL 81 at US 150, and IA 22 west of Muscatine.

From here in Papillion, NE
Interstate: The closest I am certain about is I-80 west of Kearney, NE.  My brother lives there and I have thus far resisted the temptation to get a Rocky Mountain high.  I am not sure about whether I have all of I-229 in St. Joseph, MO.  I might have in one of my earliest trips to Kansas City, but that was before I really kept track of things.  I do not have all of I-435 or I-635 in KC.
US Highway: US 34 going west from NE 79 in the far NW corner of Lincoln, NE
State highway: In Nebraska, I have not been on NE 128 between NE 50 and NE 67.  The closest spur route I have missed is the one in Saunders County that goes to Malmo.  In Iowa, I have almost completely missed IA 173 and IA 48 (only the E-W section in Shenandoah)

EDIT (10-16) There's another Iowa highway roughly as close as IA 173 and IA 48 I have missed almost completely, which is IA 44.  The closest segment I don't have is the segment between IA 191 and US 59.  I have a small part of it in Harlan, and then none of the rest going eastbound to IA 141.

I'll add more categories:

Closest stretch of Interstate in either direction: Southbound lanes of I-95 near Exit 54 in MA, about 15 miles away (I have been on this segment northbound only)

Closest exit: Exit 3, Lowell Connector, about 12 miles away

Closest exit that I didn't turn around immediately afterwards: Exit 52, I-495 (due to detour, not missed exit)

Closest freeway of any type: US 1 in Newburyport (freeway for only 1 mile), about 15 miles away; if that doesn't count, MA 128 (section that is not I-95) east of Exit 18, about 25 miles away

Closest town not set foot in: Boxford, MA (closest point about 1 mile away as the crow flies; I have been through it, but never set foot)

Closest town never in at all: Pelham, NH, about 5 miles away

Closest 2di (closest 3di was mentioned in my first post here): I-95 (MA) south of Exit 20, about 30 miles away

Closest numbered state border crossing: NH 121A, about 10 miles away (there is no MA 121A), however, I have been really close to it

Closest year-round public transportation: Bus 01 on MVRTA, 0.6 miles away (I have been on a closer section)

Closest Interstate I have traveled none of: I-190

Closest US route I have traveled none of: US 1A in Maine closest to New Hampshire border

Closes state route I have traveled none of: NH 128 (I have traveled none of MA 108, but I consider MA/NH 108 one route)

Although I'm not 100% sure, I believe I've never traveled I-295 between exits 34 and 36 due to the fact that I use the former to go south and the latter to go north. If this is true, it's less than 2.5 miles away. If you exclude that, I've never been on most of the NJ section of I-676, 7 miles away.
Closest 2di segment: I-76 PA Turnpike, 29 miles away
Closest Interstate I've traveled none of, at least as a driver, is I-176, 56 miles away
Closest entire 2di: I-81, 110 miles away
Closest US route segment: US 130 south of I-76, 7 miles away
Closest 2dus segment: US 30 south of NJ 73, 12 miles away
Closest US route: US 301, 52 miles away
Closest 2dus: US 15, 120 miles away
Closest state route segment: NJ 41 north of Lenola Road, 2.5 miles away

For me

I-95, anything north of Bangor ME and south of Richmond VA
US 20, anything west of Albany NY save for small stretches in NY west of there

State routes are hard, I've ridden all of them in MA and most in NH, a lot on bicycle and car, so something in either southern Maine or northern CT or RI.

I technically haven't clinched I-79 because I've only ever gotten off at the very last off-ramp onto WB PA 5/12th St and haven't driven the last couple hundred feet onto Bayfront Pkwy.

U.S. Route would be U.S. 19, which I'm nowhere near clinching the entirety of, but most confounding is the small portion that weaves through Dormont, PA, where it's split from Truck 19. I just haven't ever had reason to drive those particular roads, as the truck route is much more direct and navigationally useful.

State routes are trickier, probably the actual closest to my house is the stretch of PA 88 south of South Park until its terminus at PA 837.

Interstate: I-84: I can see it from my balcony! Like, 0.5 miles away or so. For driving myself, I need everything east of Boise (exit 57)! (as a passenger, from I-15 to Echo, UT)
US: US-30, see above, and beyond.
State: ID-69. About 2 miles away... Yeah, it's a very short route, I could leave my house and clinch it within 15 minutes, but haven't done so yet. On the bright side, my answer is not ID-55, which is closer to my house, but I've clinched that one.

Staying with Interstates, the five closest... based on my very informal estimation...
- I-94 Dan Ryan Expressway/Bishop Ford Freeway (formerly Calumet Expressway) South of where the Skyway splits until the Southland Interchange - ~35 miles
- I-57 between I-80 and I-94 (former Dan Ryan West Leg) - ~40 miles
- I-94 between Downtown Milwaukee and Madison, WI - ~80 miles
- I-80 short stretch between I-74/280 interchange and I-88 interchange near the Quad Cities - ~100 miles
- I-74 between I-280 and I-80 in Quad Cities - ~110 miles

I'm going ATCF for distances:
Interstate: I-77 between US-421 and I-85 in NC.
US Highway: The small bit of US-219 in VA near Narrows.
VA Route: VA-177 between Radford and I-81.

From Northern WI (Rhinelander, Wausau, Stevens Point)
*M-69 in the U.P. as I have finished all of the WIS routes (closest unfinished one is WIS-95 south of Niellsville)
*A US Route is hard to find and US-169 in MN (West of I-35) wins (WIS and the UP are finished wrt U.S. routes)
*With all the Interstates in WI, MN and IA done, the closest is I-96 in MI.  Requiring a ferry to get to it obviously.

From SW Wisconsin/NE Iowa (Platteville and Dubuque)
* IA 13 SW of Dubuque (The closest WIS route is WIS 95 (coincidence?)
* US 30 around Cedar Rapids
* Again with IA and WI finished for Interstates, and MO and IL mostly done - I-72 east of Springfield is the closest (even still far away)

From Santa Clarita, CA - which because of only half of a year duration has a closer range
* State route 150 N or Santa Barbara.
* US 395 out of Victorville off the 15.
* I-5 north of ... wait for it... I-505, though I-15 north of I-70 in UT comes close (AZ being done pushes the east way back)

You are not missing much by not having driven I-83, at least north of the Maryland/Pennsylvania border. There's construction getting started on the segment between I-81 and I-283 north (east) of Harrisburg, and the segment between the Maryland border and the I-283 interchange is mostly PennDOT-bad with a narrow right shoulder (sometimes no right shoulder at all) and absolutely no left shoulder, though there is some construction around York that will presumably make it less bad, and (as I have stated in these forums before), the Dead Man's Curve south of York (at the southern terminus of Business I-83) was remediated some years ago - after decades of crashes.

I-83 in Maryland is two distinct sections - north of I-695 it is mostly a fairly typical rural Maryland freeway, south of the overlap with I-695 it's an urban freeway (the Jones Falls Expressway, JFX for short) with many curves and tight interchange ramps that comes to an end at an at-grade signalized intersection on the east side of downtown Baltimore (and within the city limits of Baltimore, one of the relatively few freeway-class roads outside of New York City that is maintained by the municipal government, not a state agency).

Thanks for the info - sounds like I haven't missed much.  The interesting thing about not having driven on I-83 at all, let alone clinching it, is that Central and Western Pennsylvania is one of my favorite places to go on vacation.  Besides being a roadgeek, I enjoy railfanning and visiting historical sites and museums.  In my pursuit of all these interests, on various vacation trips beginning in 1990 and occurring about every two years on average, I've managed to travel on, and partially or totally clinch every Interstate and freeway in Pennsylvania EXCEPT for I-83.

I like the new categories some of you have introduced. Tough stuff to figure out! I'll add some new ones of my own.

Closest 2di I have never been on at all: I'm pretty sure it's I-88 based on measuring distances with Google Maps. I-71 is further away from home. I would debate whether to count I-99. I've never been on there since it was numbered as an Interstate, but I was on the same road several times in the pre-Interstate era. I also find its number odious, but at the same time, it does have an Interstate number.

Closest 3di I have never been on at all: Already mentioned, I-795 in Maryland.

Interstates in my home state I have never been on at all: I-464 and I-564 near Norfolk and I-381 in Bristol.

Interstates in my home state I have yet to clinch in said state: The aforementioned three plus I-64 (need the westernmost 27 miles), I-77 (need the segment north of I-81), and I-195 (I have just over 1.4 miles left and will knock off most, but probably not all, of it on our Christmas trip down to Meadows of Dan).

Unclinched mainline US route in my home state I am closest to clinching in said state: Bizarrely, US-13 at 86%. I've only been up Virginia's Eastern Shore one time, back during high school, but I knocked off most of the Virginia portion of said route on that trip. US-17 is a close second at 82%. The Norfolk area is what will almost certainly keep me from getting 100% of the Virginia mileage on those two routes.

Regarding I-83, I will perhaps disagree slightly with cpzilliacus about it not being much of a miss because of one aspect of the road. On the whole, I agree with everything he says, but a few years ago when I knocked off the final segment of that road I had yet to get inside the Baltimore Beltway, I found said segment to be a fairly interesting drive. Not for the road itself, however, but rather because I never realized Baltimore was so hilly or that the road ran through what might almost be termed a bit of what felt like a slight gorge. (No doubt the fact that it was February and there was a fair amount of snow on the hills made it look more impressive than it really is.) It was totally different from any sort of scenery I ever expected to see in that part of Maryland. Any trips I ever took to old Memorial Stadium were through the city streets, never via I-83.

I'll add more categories:

Closest stretch of Interstate in either direction: Not sure, since I don't keep track at that level of detail, but my best guess would be part of northbound I-985 near Gainesville (~40 miles away).

Closest exit: I don't think I've ever had occasion to use exit 40 on I-285 (3 miles away). If it's not that, it's I-20's exit 66 (~5 miles).

Closest freeway of any type: The freeway portion of Sugarloaf Pkwy in Lawrenceville (21 miles). Closest state-maintained would be the southwest part of the Athens perimeter (49 miles).

Closest town not set foot in: Clarkston (~3 miles)

Closest town never in at all: Pine Lake (5 miles)

Closest 3di: I-124, if it still exists (105 miles). Otherwise I-385 (133 miles), just barely beating out I-459 (136 miles).

Closest numbered state border crossing: A rough tie between US 78's and GA 166's crossings into Alabama (both 61 miles).

Closest Interstate I have traveled none of: I-124 or I-385 (see above)

Closest US route I have traveled none of: US 378 (91 miles)

Closes state route I have traveled none of: GA 3 Connector in Marietta (17 miles). Closest mainline route is GA 360 (19 miles).

Quote from: 1995hoo on September 30, 2016, 07:00:02 PM
I'll add some new ones of my own.

Closest 2di I have never been on at all: I-22 (146 miles)

Closest 3di I have never been on at all: see above

Interstates in my home state I have never been on at all: None.

Interstates in my home state I have yet to clinch in said state: None. In my previous home state, Maryland, I'm missing just the half-mile or so of I-70 between I-68 and the Pennsylvania line.

Unclinched mainline US route in my home state I am closest to clinching in said state: By raw mileage, it's actually US 378 - I haven't been on it at all, but Georgia's segment is only a little over 20 miles. By percentage, probably US 78 (clinched from Temple to Lexington).

Ok, this is fun to think about. I'll use 1's categories for my two homes (Davenport/Valpo):

Closest stretch of Interstate in either direction: I-39 north of Mendota (no change)/I-94 Southbound on the Bishop Ford Freeway

Closest exit: I-80 exit 280 Iowa (Stockton)/I-65 exit 255 (61st St/Merrillville)

Closest exit that I didn't turn around immediately afterwards: Same deal

Closest freeway of any type: parts of US 34 north of Galesburg/parts of IL 394

Closest town not set foot in: Probably Donahue/Union Mills

Closest town never in at all: Buffalo Prairie, IL/Kouts

Closest 2di never traveled on at all: I-29 for both

Closest 3di never traveled on at all: I-794 Milwaukee for both

Closest numbered state border crossing: US 34 IA-IL/IN-39 and M-239

Closest year-round public transportation: N/A. I haven't used either Davenport's or Valpo's bus systems.

Closest Interstate I have traveled none of: I-794 for both

Closest US route I have traveled none of: US 63/US 141

Closes state route I have traveled none of: IA 70/IN SR-39

Makes sense, I guess. I interpreted it as "what is the closest highway to you that you have not clinched". I have not clinched I-84, and that highway is about a half mile from my house. However, the closest segment of I-84 that I have not clinched (by myself driving) is 12.3 miles away...still very pathetic. That same spot applies for US highways too (US-20, US-26, US-30). Might take a trip out to Twin Falls next weekend though, that would push that out quite a bit.

The closest SEGMENT of each type of road you have not driven on.  Does not matter whether or not you have clinched the entire road.  I asked the question because I'm curious as to how far everyone's circle of full clinching expands.

Location: San Francisco

Interstate: Short 1-exit section of I-580 in Carson City NV. Then, half of Los Angeles. (And, I've never driven to San Diego.)

US Route: Tough one, considering California's position on US routes. US-93 between Ely NV and Twin Falls ID? I really don't remember ever taking US-199, but might have done so like 20 years ago.

State: CA-33 where it parallels I-5 through very boring real estate. Also CA-84 on surface streets through Fremont, but that doesn't count.

Interstate it would be I-39 have not been on it between Portage and Stevens Point.
US Highway either US 18 or US 45 not sure which one is closer. I don't believe I have clinched any US highway.
State Highway would be WI-59 have not been on any of it west of Whitewater. Crossed it at WI-26 and I-39/90 and saw the west end in Monroe. Closest 2 digit interstate never been on would be I-57. Closest 3 digit interstate never been on likely I-196.

From Broward Co FL:

Interstate:  3di, either I-985 or I-575 in GA, whichever is closer.  2di, the newly-opened piece of I-22 between Coalburg Rd and I-65.  Beyond that, either I-71 between Louisville & Cincinnati, or I-45 in Texas, again, whichever is closer.

US Hwy:  US129 between Stockton GA and Ocilla GA, US 82 between Tifton and Waycross GA.

State:  Two stretches of FL 817, between Opa Locka and Pines Blvd, and another from Broward Blvd to the Sawgrass.  There are some other routes in Metro Broward and Miami-Dade that I'm missing but I don't really enjoy driving in urban traffic, particularly down here.  I'll wake up early one morning and pick 'em off then.

OK, closest stretch not visited (instead of never visited any or not clinched completely):

Interstate: I-5 between I-205 and I-580 (75 mi away). Could be true for much of Bay Area; that section of the 5 is for completionists only
US: US 101 north of Willits, CA (179 mi)
State: CA 35 between CA 84 and CA 92 (20 mi) - Skyline Blvd, a scenic route less than 1 hour away, and I've never been there. I'll turn in my roadgeek card now
Title: Re: Closest stretches of road you have NOT clinched

Interstate: I-169 in south Texas. Before two weekends ago, it was the newest segment of I-22 north of Birmingham AL.
US: US 158 in NC, between I-95 and I-85, about 200 miles from home.
State route: Probably VA 230 southwest of Culpeper, about 80 miles from home.

Like 1995hoo, in the last category I'm ignoring Virginia secondary state routes. There are none in my home county of Arlington (which has a deal with VDOT to maintain its own roads not in the I-/US-/VA primary systems), but I'm sure I could find some I haven't driven on the other side of the Fairfax County line less than five miles away.

At one point you wouldn't have had an answer for Interstate IIRC.

I myself struck off the second-closest first-order regional road I had never been on (A-129 East of Alcubierre) a few weeks ago (Still missing the part from Lanaja to A-1213, Google Maps is wrong). If my plans for November come through, I'll change the answers for both national and first-order regional.

All non-Interstate references are in Texas

FM 927 east of FM 56, about 25 miles (I have a feeling I'll be correcting this pretty soon.)
FM 1493, about 30 miles
Spur 580 west of I-820, about 25 miles
US 377 east of I-35W, about 30 miles
SH 10, about 35 miles
President George Bush Turnpike east of Dallas North Tollway (non-state toll road category), about 55 miles
I-45 east of SH 14, about 65 miles

Anti-clinches, using pianocello's idea

Nearest FM I've never traveled any part of: FM 1493, about 30 miles
Spur 347, about 30 miles (it isn't accessible from the south; I use Spur 280 to get to downtown Fort Worth)
SH 10, about 35 miles
Manor Expressway, about 140 miles
US 96, about 180 miles
I-49, about 210 miles

I was going to say I-15 until I realized that I never have taken I-210 from I-5 for whatever reason.  CA 166 is just a "meh" highway for the most part and I haven't really had a ton of interest.  The only part of US 395 I haven't been on is north of Spokane.

Once you get out of the Central Valley, it's quite gorgeous, especially in the spring when the hills are painted with Monolopia. Worth clinching.

US-93 where it heads north from I-15, 260 miles away
I-710 in East Los Angeles, 21 miles away
CA-47 in Compton, 22 miles away

I've clinched 142 of the roughly 243 state/US/interstate routes in CA, but I mostly seek out rural routes while photographing wildflowers and scenery. So there are quite a few stretches in the Los Angeles area I haven't bothered with, because I know they're gonna be just as ugly as the parts I have been on.

I'd clinched all those SR 8xx/9xx roads vaguely 20 years ago in Palm Beach, Broward, Martin, Hendry, much of Miami-Dade. (Still a few more to go in Dade.) But looking back, it was usually on the weekends or at night, so nothing's changed! University Drive is stoplight hell, except in Parkland, it's stop sign heck.

I still need the part of I-59 from AL 68 to I-24, but it would take me a bit out of the way doing so. After that, the newest part of I-840.

I'd have to look it up, but AL 20 northwest of US 43 and US 72 would probably be closest; I haven't traveled north of that point in US 43, either.  Maybe AL 75 northeast of Guntersville.

I have moved (and clinched more highways) since I started this topic so here's my update:

Interstate: I-74 between Normal and Peoria, 127 miles away
US Highway: US 52 between IL 47 and IL 71, 56 miles away
State Highway: IL 47 between I-80 and US 52, 54 miles away

I believe I started a similar thread, asking about the nearest freeway segment you had never driven. But this is a fun one.
State route is tough because the network is so much more extensive, and they're often used for local trips and not as memorable. I think I got it, but subject to confirmation later.

State Route: NY 383 south of NY 252/RIT, ~15 miles away
US Route: US 20 between I-390 and Bloomfield, ~22 miles away
Interstate: I-86 between NY 36 and I-390, 76 miles away

Update, since this thread's been updated:

Interstate: I-795; never traveled; 54 miles away (crow flies)
US: US 522 south of the Potomac River; 29-30 miles away
State Route: PA 416 south of US 30; 6 miles away (I have no reason to use this road, there's faster routes to Mercersburg from my house)

US highway it's US-10. I have Michigan's section clinched but not much else.

State highway it's M-55.

Since it's been 3-4 years since my last post here, my updates:

Interstate: I-59 south of Fort Payne, AL (95 miles away, straight-line distance) (unchanged)
US: US 29 between South Fulton Pkwy and GA 92 near Union City (17 miles away) US 41 at the beginning of the GA 92 concurrency in Acworth (30 miles away)
State: GA 6 inside I-285 (13 miles away) GA 120 west of downtown Marietta (19 miles)

Quote from: 1 on September 29, 2016, 09:58:27 AM
I'll add more categories:

Closest stretch of Interstate in either direction: Not sure, since I don't keep track at that level of detail, but my best guess would be part of northbound I-985 near Gainesville (~40 miles away). Now that I've definitely covered that, I really don't know. Probably northbound I-59 somewhere between Chattanooga and Fort Payne.

Closest exit: I don't think I've ever had occasion to use exit 40 on I-285 (3 miles away). If it's not that, it's I-20's exit 66 (~5 miles). (unchanged)

Closest freeway of any type: The freeway portion of Sugarloaf Pkwy in Lawrenceville (21 miles). Closest state-maintained would be the southwest part of the Athens perimeter (49 miles).

Closest town not set foot in: Clarkston (~3 miles) Pine Lake (5 miles)

Closest town never in at all: Pine Lake (5 miles) (unchanged)

Closest 3di: I-124, if it still exists (105 miles). Otherwise I-385 (133 miles), just barely beating out I-459 (136 miles). (unchanged)

Closest numbered state border crossing: A rough tie between US 78's and GA 166's crossings into Alabama (both 61 miles). (unchanged)

Closest Interstate I have traveled none of: I-124 or I-385 (see above) (unchanged)

Closest US route I have traveled none of: US 378 (91 miles) (unchanged)

Closes state route I have traveled none of: GA 3 Connector in Marietta (17 miles). Closest mainline route is GA 360 (19 miles). (checking mainline routes only) GA 293 (35 miles)

I'll add some new ones of my own.

Closest 2di I have never been on at all: I-22 (146 miles) (unchanged)

Closest 3di I have never been on at all: see above (unchanged)

Interstates in my home state I have never been on at all: None. (unchanged)

Interstates in my home state I have yet to clinch in said state: None. In my previous home state, Maryland, I'm missing just the half-mile or so of I-70 between I-68 and the Pennsylvania line. (unchanged)

Unclinched mainline US route in my home state I am closest to clinching in said state: By raw mileage, it's actually US 378 - I haven't been on it at all, but Georgia's segment is only a little over 20 miles. By percentage, probably US 78 (clinched from Temple to Lexington). US 19 (missing the part north of the Appalachian Trail except for the part that's also US 76, which beats US 378 by about a quarter-mile per TM)

Interesting question ... I'll bite.

Note that these were determined by "eyeballing" maps - possible that I may have missed something closer.

For reference I live in central Maryland, inside the triangle formed by Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington.

Interstate:  I-76 through Philadelphia (airport and north).  Never had a reason to go there.
US Highway:  A piece of US 1 in Baltimore.  Not in a really good neighborhood; avoided for that reason.
State Highway:  MD 206 near Laurel MD.  A new road, it was only recently designated MD 206 in 2014.

State: probably TX-6 near Santa Fe
US: either US 59 near Sugar Land or US 90 Alt near Stafford
Interstate: Same as US answer: US 59/I-69 near Sugar Land

Interstate: I-75 between M-55 (west) and US-127 (as the crow flies, I-43 south of Manitowoc is much closer)
US Highway: US-127 between US-10 and M-55 (as the crow flies, US-10 and US-151 west of Manitowoc are closer)
State: M-72 in southern Leelanau County, followed by M-66 between M-42 and M-72

For me, Interstate, US Route and State Route, as well as freeway overall, remain the same.

National highway: N-230 Northeast of Alcampell (the only section of National road in my province I haven't done yet)
Regional road (1st order): A-137
Regional road (2nd order): A-1202 West of Santa Eulalia de Gallego
Regional road (3rd order): A-2208

Now I realized I didn't include the 3rd order in my first post. At the time it was near-absolute, as it was also the closest road of that kind to me (A-2203), which I had mostly missing. I've since driven that.

Closest 3di I have never been on at all: Already mentioned, I-795 in Maryland.

Interstates in my home state I have never been on at all: I-464 and I-564 near Norfolk and I-381 in Bristol.

Interstates in my home state I have yet to clinch in said state: The aforementioned three plus I-64 (need the westernmost 27 miles), I-77 (need the segment north of I-81), and I-195 (I have just over 1.4 miles left and will knock off most, but probably not all, of it on our Christmas trip down to Meadows of Dan) (missing about 0.7 of a mile where the road branches off to head towards downtown and VA-195).

The Norfolk area is what will almost certainly keep me from getting 100% of the Virginia mileage on those two routes.

....

Gabriel Road and Riverside Blvd.

This is a dead end street that turns into a dirt road before it ends and there are about 7 houses on the Tittabawassee River that are only on the river side of the street.

There is a private property sign just after the entrance to Green Point Nature Center and that's as far as I've ever gone down that street. It bends to the right and I've never gone around that bend.

GSV goes up as far as I've been back there too so the GSV van has done the same thing as me there. You can see the houses on satellite view along the river.

One was for sale one time and I went and looked at the Zillow profile for the house. It didn't look like anything special and more resembled a cottage up north than a house in Saginaw.

Based on fastest driving distance via Google Maps:

2-digit Interstate: I-81 - 307 miles (Scranton, PA) - I'm missing all of I-81 north of Scranton
3-digit Interstate: I-295 - 218 miles (Bronx, NY) - only missing the portion between 695 and 95/278 in the Bronx
US route:  US 5 - 122 miles (Wells River, VT) - missing US 5 between US 302 and US 2
State route: RI 126 - 71 miles (Woonsocket, RI) - I've finished NH and MA, and the nearest roads I haven't driven in VT and ME are 120+ miles away, so Woonsocket, RI is the winner

I imagine some of these might be different if distances are calculated as the crow files rather than via driving, due to the fastest route for me to head west involving heading southeast into Mass first.

I haven't *technically* finished NH, as I haven't driven the Connecticut River bridges on 25A and 26, but I'm calling it close enough as it's less than a mile shy. You can see the state line in both cases.

This has been the case for a few years now. I got NH to this point before finishing MA in 2018.

Keeping this to an Interstate or major highway perspective and within no more than one state over:
I-94 Wisconsin... Never taken it between Milwaukee and Madison, usually I-90 is my route to go that way
I-41 North of Milwaukee... haven't been up that way yet
I-74 West of Indianapolis except for the multiplexed portion in Bloomington/Normal, and between Champaign/Urbana and near Danville, never really had a reason to use the other portions
I-474... same basic reason as I-74
I-155... same basic reason as I-74/474
I-80 short stretch between I-80/74/280 interchange and I-88... always either used I-80 to I-88 to get from Iowa to Chicago or I-280 to I-80
I-180... Basically because this Interstate is useless
IN 912 NW of Gary Airport... Bridge closed, and never traveled it prior to the closure

Digging up an old thread.  I clinched I-27 last week which was the closest stretch of interstate that I hadn't been on.  I figured I'd take a look what my closest opportunities are now to get new interstate mileage.

I-94 in Montana between Billings and MT47: 7 hours 52 minutes
I-40 in Oklahoma City east of I-35: 9 hours 17 minutes
I-110 in Texas: 9 hours 24 minutes
I-240 in Oklahoma City east of I-35: 9 hours 26 minutes
I-10 in Texas just east of the I-20 interchange: 10 hours 51 minutes
I-380 in Iowa north of I-80: 11 hours 1 minute (this is the closest that I haven't been on at all)
I-35W in Texas near Denton: 11 hours 17 minutes
I-820 in Texas near I-35W: 11 hours 23 minutes
I-40 in Arizona west of Williams: 11 hours 27 minutes
I-635 in Texas near DFW: 11 hours 41 minutes
I-35E in Texas south of I-345: 11 hours 51 minutes

Everything else is >12 hours.

From Salt Lake City, leaving out nonpublic institutional state routes:

Interstate - I-15 south of Mesquite, NV
US highway - US 30 at Sage, WY (restricting to Utah: US 191 north of Vernal)
State route - SR 302 past the Rockport SP fee gate

And from Atlanta:

Interstate - I-20 east of Madison
US highway - US 23 on part of Moreland Ave
State route (that isn't also a US highway) - GA 42 Spur on McDonough Blvd

Any significant stretch of MO 58 east of I-49, and now I want to clinch it, because I just found out its eastern end is an RCUT: https://goo.gl/maps/G7dyLSRTce4SfhJMA

Other nearby state routes:

KS 5 west of I-635
MO 9 west of I-635
MO 45
MO 152 between I-435 and I-29

Edit: Also MO 291 south of MO 150 is one I have not driven.

Interstate (from school): I-865. I haven't clinched I-465 yet, but I-865 is closer (to both home and school) than what I've missed on I-465.

Interstate (from home): I-80/90 ITR. I will probably never touch the ITR east of South Bend.

US: US-224 IN. I have not traveled between Decatur and Convoy-Heller Rd/OH-49.

IN: IN-37 Allen County Segment

MS: Had to include due to how much I was down there over the last couple years but I never got MS-475 Airport Rd south of US-80 to I-20.

To update:

I've since clinched the entirety of MD 206 near Laurel.  Looks like the closet state route is now MD 387 south of Annapolis (Spa Road).  It doesn't really go anywhere interesting so I would probably have make a specific trip there to clinch it.

Interstate:  I-76 through Philadelphia (airport and north).  Never had a reason to go there.
US Highway:  A piece of US 1 in Baltimore.  In a pretty bad neighborhood; avoided for that reason.  One of these days I'll get it.
State Highway:  MD 387 near Annapolis MD.  Never had a reason to go there.

I-5.  I've never been on the southernmost bit between San Diego and the Mexican border.  When I was on road trips to Mexico, we always crossed the border farther inland, Mexicali etc.

... this is a fun one.

Interstate: I-86 between NY 36 and I-390, 76 miles away I-481 north of I-90, ~70 miles away

Not much has changed here, other than an answer I had incorrect before.

Adding my answers to some of the other categories:

Closest exit: NY 390 Exit 25 - Vintage Ln (~10 miles)
Closest Interstate exit: I-490 Exit 1 - NY 19 (~25 miles)
Closest freeway of any type: NY 690 north of NY 370 (~55 miles)

Closet 2di segment: My (incorrect) previous overall answer: I-86 between NY 36 and I-390 (~75 miles)
Closest 3di segment: Same as above: I-481 north of I-90 (~70 miles)
Closest overall 2di: Very close race between I-68 (~240 miles) and I-91 (~250 miles)
Closest overall 3di: I-781 NY (~115 miles)

Home state 2di's, never been on: none
Home state 3di's, never been on: I-678, I-781, I-787, I-890, I-295, I-495, I-695
Home state interstates, unclinched: I-84, I-86, I-87, I-88, I-90 (only missing free I-90 in Albany), I-95, I-278, I-678, I-781, I-684, I-787, I-890, I-295, I-495, I-695

Closest overall US Route: US 4 (~190 miles)
Closest overall State Route: Tough, but having recently crossed off NY 246 and NY 262, I think it's NY 90 (~40 miles)
Closest numbered state border crossing: NY 36/PA 249

If you break down all the interstates into individual segments (generally between exits), what is the closest one to you that you have not clinched. Same for US highways and state highways.

State Road: bits of AL 75 northeast of AL 227

I clinched AL 75 last summer, so now it's the section of Tennessee SR 129 that's east of US 431.

QuoteUS Route: US 11 north of Fort Payne near I-59

The section from Hammondville to Sulphur Springs has been closed for bridge repairs for several months, but it recently reopened to traffic. Finishing up US 11 within Alabama is still on the to-do list...

QuoteInterstate: I-269 in Mississippi

Scooped up this one back in March, but my closest is still I-269 in Tennessee north of SR 193.

Interstate: I-80 between Laramie, WY and Big Springs, NE (at I-76).
US Highway: US 85 north of County Road O in Greeley, CO.

I guess clinching highways in the Denver metro hasn't been as high of a priority. Time to take some drives.

Ah yes, places with a bunch of urban arterial state highway mileage. It was a similar story for me in Salt Lake - took me a few drives to clinch all the random urban surface street state highways between Ogden and Provo I hadn’t yet been on otherwise.

Imagine living in a place like Tulsa, where there is almost no nonfreeway state highway mileage. Must be nice.

It's a direction MnDOT has moved in, with pretty much all non-freeway surface mileage inside of 494/694 not numbered MN 55 being on the long-term kill list. Major cities here largely want control over the streets in their cores, with almost all surface mileage being axed in Duluth in 1997 and US 63 being taken out of downtown Rochester in the early 2010s.

I live in Denver but even if I lived here 50 more years, I doubt I'd ever clinch the entirety of E-470.  Unless it becomes free some day.

I've clinched every other section of numbered highway in the Denver Metro.

The nearest state highways I don't have clinched (besides E-470) are: CO-7 (I have it all except Lyons to CO-72), CO-105 (Sedalia to Palmer Lake), and a bunch of the E-W numbered highways north of Longmont (e.g., CO-56, CO-402, CO-60).

The nearest chunks of US Highway I don't have are: US-40 between Granby and Kremmling, and US_24 between Limon and Colorado Springs.

The nearest chunk of interstate I don't have is: I-80 between Kimball, NE and Sidney.

Northwest Parkway was my last one to clinch in the metro.  No need to use it from where I live and obviously being a toll road made me not feel compelled to do it before I actively started clinching.

Those E-W ones were annoying up north, but I just kept zigzagging back and forth when I was coming back from a camping trip up by Red Feather Lakes.

Interstate: I-481 north of I-90, ~70 miles away

OK, I might as well give an update on this.

State route is basically a toss-up:
-NY 15 south of Livonia (25 miles as the crow flies, 32 miles by road)
-NY 237 north of Holley (28 miles as the crow flies, 32 miles by road)

US route is now US 20 west of NY 63 (34 miles as the crow flies, 43 miles by road)

Interstate remains unchanged.

AZ-195 is 162 miles away. NV-160 is 321 miles away. The closest in my home state of California is CA-165, which is 387 miles away. These are all road miles according to Google. This doesn't include lesser roads like numbered forest routes, county routes, or BIA roads, just state, US, and Interstate.

Interstates:
I don't have to go very far for this one. I have yet to drive I-290 between Mannheim Rd and the Circle. I also haven't clinched I-55 from I-294 to the Dan Ryan. I don't know when I'll get to these two given they are useless to my travel patterns and when I'm out clinching, I prefer to go away from the city, not closer to it.

US Routes:
Quite a few, but the closest ones would be US-14 and US-41. Unlikely to clinch these anything soon for the same reasons as above.

State Routes:
Too many to list! IL-43 and IL-50 are both close but again, I don't want to drive through Chicago.

Looks like I've moved a couple times since I first posted in this thread, so I've got an update:

Interstate: I-64 east of I-69

I only recently moved to Evansville, so that's an easy fix the first time I go to Louisville. Same deal with I-69 south(west) of I-169, I'll fix that the first time I head in that direction. The real elusive one for me is I-70 in Illinois, that one's going to take some work to get to since any trip would go at least an hour out of the way for me to use it.

US Route: US 41 south of Henderson. I'll get there eventually, but I'm not in a rush.
State Route: Something in Kentucky. By road, I think the closest is KY 351 but I think 811 and 1078 are closer to my place by straight line.

From 2016:

Quote from: 1 on September 28, 2016, 09:56:15 PM
Interstate: I-293 north of Exit 1
US route: US 1 near MA 97 (I haven't been on US 1 between Danvers and Newburyport, and this section is closest to me)
State route: MA 28 north of MA 110, just a few miles away

Interstate: Still accurate.
US route: The exact spot is still accurate. I've been on some of the Danvers-Newburyport segment of US 1 (namely the segment north of MA 133), but still not where it crosses MA 97.
State route: I have traveled the segment of MA 28 listed now. My new closest is the eastern end of NH 38. While its eastern end is ambiguous, I haven't traveled either branch past the split. (Contrary to my Travel Mapping which shows NH 38 entirely empty, I've traveled the rest of NH 38; it's just that I went to the mall back entrance instead of the front entrance so I didn't get the easternmost portion.)

Seeing this thread with activity reminded me that my response is now several years old and out of date.  Specifics are the different, but distances are similar.

I: I-478 Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, about 185 miles away (unless I was through it as a young child, seems unlikely)
US: US 5 near Deerfield, MA, about 115 miles away
State: NY 396 west of US 9W, still about 40 miles away

BTW, for anyone using TM's Mapview to get an idea what your answers are, setting "Highlight Untraveled" makes it easier to see.

US: either US 59 near Sugar Land or US 90 Alt near Stafford
Interstate: Same as US answer: US 59/I-69 near Sugar Land
Since I am now at college, I should probably add my answers for there, as well as update my original stretches. My closest stretches for the categories mentioned have not changed that much, but I'll expand on them:

From Home:

Interstate: I-45 between NASA Road 1 and TX 6 (actually last time I erroneously said that I-69 was my closest, but this stretch of I-45 is barely closer by less than a mile)
US Route: US 59 between Wharton and Sugar Land
US Business Route: US 59 Business-R in Wharton north of FM 1301
State Route: TX 6 between Santa Fe (FM 646) and Hitchcock (FM 2004)
State Business Route: TX 146 Business in Baytown
State Loop Route: TX Loop 540 north of FM 1875 in Beasley
State Spur Route: TX Spur 419 in Old Ocean
FM Road: FM 2917 south of FM 2403

From College:

Interstate: I-40 between Henrietta and Webbers Falls
US Route: US 64/169 between Memorial Drive and I-44 in SE Tulsa
US Business Route: US 62/64 Business in Muskogee
State Route: OK 364 at just 2 miles away

Today, I clinched WI-156. Up until today, it was the closest numbered highway to my house than I had never driven on. (Less than 20 miles.) So I went from never drivng on the highway at all, to clinching it all on the same day.

Update: The closest in California is now the west end of CA-140, 412 miles away.

The closest interstate I haven't driven is I-19 just south of Tucson, which by road is 396 miles away from my home near San Diego. There are several more in the Bay Area that are a little further away, but those will all probably get clinched over the next year. Maybe I-19, too, in which case the closest would be I-215 south of Salt Lake City (746 miles away).
