It makes sense. The road doesn't carry THAT much traffic, and extra lanes work against the purpose of ripping out I-375 to begin with. It sounds like MDOT is genuinely trying to not steamroll its will over that of the locals, which is a positive step forward.


How many wide boulevards are already radiating out of downtown Detroit already (Michigan Ave, Grand River, Woodward,...)?   Turning the former I-375 from a freeway to a 4-lane boulevard into town should be fine if they just keep parking and bus stops off the actual Boulevard in order to maintain clear-flowing traffic while keeping the lights synched for limited stop and go traffic.

If someone is in such a hurry to leave town from Jefferson Avenue @ the Tunnel.  The Lodge is still available...

The only pluses I see is that traffic will not have to exit to stay on Interstate 75 both northbound and southbound, and the probably-unneeded connector to Gratiot Ave. will be removed. I hope they don't eventually do the same to M-10 south of Interstate 75. That connection may still be needed in the future.

I normally don't support freeway removals but this one, i-81, and the inner loop were good ideas. they all never should have been built in the first place in my opinion because traffic never justified it in the first place.

I think the Gratiot connector is one of the main ways to get to and from Ford Field and Comerica stadiums & parking. They should leave the connector for sure.

The Gratiot connector doesn't do much for stadium traffic. Fans usually park anywhere downtown and either walk or take the People Mover. All the Gratiot connector really does is gives I-75 an exit for Gratiot which with the removal of I-375 it really doesn't need. I-375's existence came from a re-route of I-75. The Lodge could easily be tunneled as far back as Michigan Avenue.

The part that goes past the old Tiger Stadium and up to the Gratiot connector would be Vernor Highway. The part that goes south of I-94 would be Hastings Street.

Assuming keeping the existing freeways, demolishing underutilized exit ramps. Maybe removing the M-10 / Lodge Frwy's interchanges with both 75 and 94, or allowing them to be incomplete interchanges and elsewhere within those 6.

That stretch of I-75 gets very busy so not having a freeway there would probably not be a good thing though. I-75 should be in a tunnel between Brush and Grand River.

I-94 in inadequate for the traffic it has now - and there are many reasons that it hasn't been expanded for years. Adding I-75 traffic to it would be horrendous.

I-94 in inadequate for the traffic it has now - and there are many reasons that it hasn't been expanded for years. Adding I-75 traffic to it would be horrendous.

Not today it wouldn't work but back in the 1950's and 60's it might have. I-94 needs to be widened pretty much throughout the entire state and is well under capacity in the city of Detroit so yep adding I-75 to it would not be good but back when they were building the freeways they could have done something like that. Every freeway in Detroit should be at least 5 lanes in each direction, I-94 isn't the only one undersized.

And another thing is you'd need another freeway besides the Lodge to go into downtown. If you're putting all the traffic on the Lodge that would be awful.

This is the reason I am a fan.  The current intersection is just stupid, especially the NB I-75 to NB I-75 section.

I could care less about righting past sins, narrative.  Tearing down a freeway that isn't necessary doesn't right anything.  But honestly I can't bring myself to care much about a freeway that's really just a mile long connector to Jefferson.

That sounds good in theory, but until the I-94 rebuild is finished in 30 years the overkill is needed.  Ramps at the I-94/M-10 and I-94/I-75 interchanges are regularly closed for whatever little bit of I-94 is being worked on.  Hell, for the most recent bridge replacement (Cass Avenue), nbd and sbd M-10 to ebd I-94, and wbd I-94 to sbd and nbd M-10, were closed for a year and a half.  Watching the perpetually-repeating cycle of barrels being put out and then being picked up is pathetically ridiculous.  I would swear that MDOT could save money in the long run by installing mechanically-operated gates at the interchange ramps (like the ones used on reversible freeway express lanes) instead of paying for subcontractors to deal with barrels on every individual project.

The way MDOT operates, yeah, they'll probably close down the entire freeway, detour it on to the other freeway and then close that freeway down too!  Then they'll send traffic to Canada or Lansing and call it a super detour.

Yeah like yesterday at about 2:00 in the afternoon traffic was backed up going northbound all because of the 25 mph curve. It seems like anytime there's a curve in a freeway everyone slams on their brakes, like the curve further up just before the Davison Freeway, that curve will bring traffic to a stand still anytime of the day.

And here comes another example of a partial freeway closing for the next 2 years...This time it's the I-275/I-96/M-14 interchange and approaches.

The likely detours/alternate routes will be:

I-96 using 696/Lodge/Southfield, while Detroit to Ann Arbor traffic using I-94 to avoid the project.

Thru I-275 traffic looks to be the leat affected.

That sounds good in theory, but until the I-94 rebuild is finished in 30 years the overkill is needed.  Ramps at the I-94/M-10 and I-94/I-75 interchanges are regularly closed for whatever little bit of I-94 is being worked on.  Hell, for the most recent bridge replacement (Cass Avenue), nbd and sbd M-10 to ebd I-94, and wbd I-94 to sbd and nbd M-10, were closed for a year and a half.  Watching the perpetually-repeating cycle of barrels being put out and then being picked up is pathetically ridiculous.  I would swear that MDOT could save money in the long run by installing mechanically-operated gates at the interchange ramps (like the ones used on reversible freeway express lanes) instead of paying for subcontractors to deal with barrels on every individual project.

And the one thing MDOT like to do is to close entire stretches of freeway and detour traffic via the surrounding freeways.

I'm sure when they rebuild the I-75 curve at I-375, I-75 thru traffic will be rerouted up I-96 or M-10 to I-94 to I-75.

And likely the reverse when they someday rebuild I-94 between I-75 and I-96.

By closing an entire stretch (or direction) of freeway, work gets done quicker -- in theory...

And here comes another example of a partial freeway closing for the next 2 years...This time it's the I-275/I-96/M-14 interchange and approaches.

The likely detours/alternate routes will be:

I-96 using 696/Lodge/Southfield, while Detroit to Ann Arbor traffic using I-94 to avoid the project.

Thru I-275 traffic looks to be the leat affected.
That's fine I'll either avoid the area or I'll use Newburgh to Six Mile and vice versa.
