Ohio - weird marker assemblies - 1970s/1980s

I remember Ohio having some very strange marker assemblies sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, but they didn't last long at all.

For one thing, the 7 was straighter, and the arrows were tapered. You still see a few old signs that have this, but there were other weird things too.

I remember some JCT assemblies that actually had the arrow plate. You'd see JCT for a route, and the arrow would be below the marker, just as it was at the intersection.

Here's something else weird that I don't know if I can describe. Sometimes at the intersection, the direction and arrow would be together on a square sign the same size as the marker, posted next to the marker. There were some of these in downtown Cincinnati. I don't think this lasted very long at all.

Anyone else remember these?

I miss the old tapered arrows.  They were always a tell tale sign that I was in Ohio.  Not sure if any other states regularly used these in the same time period.

I thought I had seen some tapered arrows back in my early roadgeeking days (35-40 years ago) but I don't have any photos.

On the other hand, still plenty of JCT assemblies with arrow tabs/plates in northwest Ohio.  If this is what you're talking about:

I remember the tapered Ohio arrows, the N-EAST/S-EAST/N-WEST/S-WEST directional plates, and (still in use in some places) a not-quite-as-tall-as-those-shown-above JCT plate.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Is this an example of a tapered arrow?

Yes, that's like what Ohio had.

They also used tapered arrows on wayfinder signs near major intersections (still do?)

Here's a good one still standing in Cincinnati - https://maps.app.goo.gl/VruHSZvj7d73FUgFA

Your last sign description made me think of these...is this what you are referring to?

Yes, that's what I meant.

I may have actually seen that sign assembly when I visited Athens, but I just don't remember it.

Eastern Ohio still has these scattered about.  I don't get to western Ohio enough to know...

FWIW, two Canadian provinces still use the practices referenced here. ON has the combination arrow/direction signs, while QC uses the (slightly) tapered up arrow at autoroute junctions.
