Title: Arcade video games
Post by: inkyatari on November 22, 2016, 10:47:17 AM
I'm co-host of an arcade videogame podcast, The Pie Factory (http://"http://www.fab4it.com/piefactory/#/"), and we talk about two arcade games per episode, with a sepcial episode roughly every 10th.

I was wondering, those who were into the arcade scene of the 80's and early 90's, what were your favorite games?

We've yet to cover Bosconian.  I love the game.  There's a great similar game for the PC and Linux called Kobo Deluxe that's worth a look.

Beat'em ups; Ninja Turtles Arcade, Final Fight, Double Dragon, and the Simpsons game just to name a few.  Fighting games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat were better in the arcade also.

Bingo!

For a classic video game, I always did like Defender even though I did not do well at it.  Those smart bombs clearing the screen were so cool!

Heh.  Last year, about this time, the Galloping Ghost arcade had a Narc Developer's night, and all the guys from Williams / Midway from around then were there..

Anyway, so was developer Eugene Jarvis, developer of Robotron, Stargate, Blaster, Narc, Smash TV, and of course, Defender.

I was watching him play Defender.  He literally only lasted like 3 minutes.  I have a photo of him somewhere hwen he lost his last life.

Played many during that time frame. Guantlet was easily my all time favorite. Played Turbo, Rastan, Spy Hunter and Super Off-Road quite a bit too. Later on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Xmen arcade game became staples at the bowling alley or Christiana Mall arcade.

I thought a version did come out for it?

At any rate, now there's a homebrew clone for the 8Bits called Beef Drop

The sit-down Out Run
Ms. Pac-Man
Bump n Jump
Monaco GP
Turbo

I loved the Intellivision version of Burger Time but never played it in the arcade. My brother still has our Intellivision and says it still works. Maybe I'll have to borrow it sometime (or just buy an emulator at Toys R Us near our neighborhood, if that thing includes Burger Time).

They had one in the burger joint in my hometown growing up and the 8 bit sound effects are burned into my brain.

I don't think it does, but there are Intellivision emulators for the PC, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi (which I'm setting up,) that would run it.

Don't think that ever made it to the arcades.  Plus that game gets shit on way too much for being difficult, it's really nowhere near as bad as advertised.

For classic arcade games, I'd say Gauntlet, Tempest, Space Invaders, Galaxians, Centipede and Asteroids.

Also, I forget what it was called, but I also remember a tabletop football game where two opponents face each other playing 'X's v 'O's, selecting plays and formations and then moving the action on the screen by spinning cue balls that are set into its top.  It was loads of fun.

Atari Football is the name of that one.  I'm not much for sports games, especially football, but that game is a blast.

Peter Gunn.  Classic.

If anyone's interested, Pie Factory has a couple videos on youtube.  First, here's us playing the Beavis and Butt-Head prototype game at the Galloping Ghost arcade, Brookfield IL (largest arcade in the world, according to Guiness.)  I'm wearing the camera in all these.

Secondly, here's an unfortunate glitch...

Finally, here's us playing Xenophobe with the game's creator, Brian COlin

Remember a video game called Rally X? They had this at a local arcade. One time, I was playing it at the arcade, and my brother and I got in a big argument about something, and we got kicked out.

I own an Intellivision emulator...it doesn't have their version of Burgertime. I didn't even know they had a version of it. I liked playing Burgertime in the arcade.

Are you talking the Intellivision Flashback?  If so, it's probably a rights issue, asto why its not on there.

George Plimpton's biggest claim to fame was appearing in the commercials for Intellivision.

Also, Will Lee - who played Mr. Hooper on 'Sesame Street' - appeared in a commersh for the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man.

Jack Black was on a commercial for 2600 Pitfall!

At the arcade my 80's favorites were Asteroids, Space Invaders, Defender, Pole Position and Hard Drivin' (loved that force feedback steering wheel and manual transmission with a clutch!).

Oh and I almost forgot: Red Baron. I must have wasted hundreds of dollars of tokens in that game back in the early 80's.

At home it was Asteroids, Defender (and a similar game by Activision called Chopper Command) and a boatload of other Atari 2600 games.

Secret area? Nope I guess not. I remember there were two "choices" of routes at a split and the one to the right went to an area that had a vertical loop that was crazy, and I want to say the left split had a monster jump where it was real easy to lose control on landing. I could be wrong, but it's been 26 years since I have even seen the game

At the very beginning, turn your car right around. You don't have to drive very far, and there's a road off toyour right.  Drive straight down this, and there's a tower in the midle of a parking lot surrounded by signs.  No idea why its there. If you look carefully on the map screen, it's actually on it.

I wonder if the FPS category got on. I haven't had much luck trying to find Duke Nukem arcade machines (1991/1993/1996).

The platformers were about as good as you were going to get on the PC.  For whatever really they couldn't really ever replicate the smooth side-scrolling of the console systems.  I remember being actually surprised reading about how Duke Nukem was going to get a Doom Clone style game, more surprised when I found out how the sense of humor in the game was.  :-D Things got so much better when emulators started popping up in the late 1990s.

That last one was a toughie - I think it was also the first arcade game with a gear shifter which was more than just a 2-position HI-LO lever (Pole Position, Turbo, Outrun, et al). I recall it took me all afternoon to finish a lap, compared to Pole Position I/II. I also played the heck out of Final Lap, Super Monaco GP (it was probably the first that had paddle shifting), Outrun, and a few others.

I think Space Invaders was the first coin-op I'd played; I still recall a few times that half the arcade games were pinball machines and vaguely half of the coin-op consoles still had black-and-white screens. Also enjoyed Galaga, Joust, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Bump & Jump, and Tempest; I'll still wander over to those in some of the retro arcades out there, especially the first two.

If you like pinball and are in the Law Vegas area, they have a Pinball Museum of sorts on Tropicana Ave where you can go and play the very first pinball machine ever made, which didn't include flippers, to the most recent models out there!
