Mostly similar rules to the Guess the Bridge, Speed limit and State challenges...
- Someone posts a picture of somewhere on a 2 digit number interstate highway, and the rest of the people try to guess which interstate it is.
- If you guess incorrectly, you have to wait at least 12 hours or when the next image is posted (whichever comes first) before guessing again.
- The person that guesses correctly gets to post the next picture. If that person doesn't post an image within 24 hours after getting the reply that they guessed correctly, anyone can post an image.
- If the pictured highway is concurrent between multiple numbers, only one of the numbers is needed to count. For example, if a image of I-39/90/94 is posted, and someone guesses I-90, they get to post the next picture.
- You can post a concurrency between a 2di and the 3di, but only the 2di number will be up for guesses.
- You don't have to specify which segment for discontinuous interstates. So "I-88" can refer to both the one in Illinois and the one in New York.
- You don't have to guess which state the interstate highway is in (even for discontinuous interstates), and there won't be any reward for doing so.
- If your entry haven't been correctly guessed after 24 hours, you have to reveal which Forum Region (Ohio Valley, Mid South, Pacific Southwest, etc) it is in.
I'll start with a 3di first digit 1-3...
Changelog:
- Changed the required specifications to include the census region the interstate is in. My entry is the only exception to this, as it was done before the change.
- Removed 3dis from eligibility here (as they're mostly all the same looking generic suburban freeways) to make the game flow better, and removed census regions. Mine and Webny99's first entry are the only exceptions to this.
I-271?
It might make the game more interesting to limit it to photos taken by the user, since I'm sure we've all taken a photo of an Interstate at some point.

Nope
I'll play out this game for a bit before adding/relaxing the rules. Regarding limiting the pictures, maybe that could be implemented later, but I think some people (including myself) take far more pictures focused of road signs on an interstate than the road itself, and it would be sort of hard to use those pictures in this game without some of the surroundings, assuming you blur our whatever is on the sign of course.
OK, I-295?
(There's multiple I-295's, so I guess in this case if I'm correct, I would get credit regardless of which I-295 it is?)

Nope
The "Guess the Bridge" thread requires a notable feature on the bridge, and disallows generic overpasses. Would it be too obvious if I require an exit number to be in the photo (like the one below, on the same interstate as the first photo), and possibly reducing the number of ranges to just "2di, 3di 1-4, 3di 5-9" if it makes the game too easy then?

Hmmm. There's already been a few guesses on this one and still tons of options left, so we might need something that narrows it down. What do you think about specifying the state or region, and then 2di or 3di, not which number it starts with?
This one is kind of bothering me now, as I've found several qualifying 3di's with an Exit 32, but none of them have enough lanes. But I suppose there's no harm in trying again... I-270 (considering that OH, MD, and MO all have an Exit 32)?

Yes. It's I-270 in Columbus, between I-670 and the Easton Way exit. The Exit 32 tab I left visible is for the Morse Rd exit a bit north of the image location. So you're next.
As for regions, how about using official Census regions, or is that too broad? And I'll still split the 3di into two, to even it out. The numbering categories would be something like this
2di - 70 options
3di first digit 1-3 - 69 options
3di first digit 4-9 - 79 options

Now that I'm thinking about it, I might remove the 3di ranges, as it's pretty easy to tell that it's NY in the above pic from the gantry and exit tab style, which leaves only 190, 290, 390, 278 and 287 as choices.

Also no. I-290 is one of very few interstates in NY that's entirely six lanes.

Well, I just eliminated 290 and 390, and it's pretty clearly not 278. So that would leave 287 (actually, it's pretty clearly not NY's portion of 287, either) and 190. But rather than wait for those to be guessed, I'll just say it now: this is actually
not in New York.
New York uses extruded sign panels instead of incremental, and you don't usually see that type of construction "cone" in New York.
I will note the fact that there's no exit tabs on the sign in the other direction - that could be a potential clue.
Might make the game flow better (and make the guessing easier) if it was limited to 2dis. Urban 3dis kind of all look about the same, so unless there's a gantry visible or something else that tips off which state it's in, it's kind of a crapshoot. 2dis can have more variety due to their long length.

Allowing only 2dis would still leave 70 choices, which is comparable to the guess the state/province challenge.
I'm fine with whatever is decided, but if we do change to 2di only, just let me know how my entry from above should be handled.

Actually a bit less, as now I realized that the Wikipedia list counts discontinuous interstates with the same number separately, while I'll be counting it as the same, since like with 3di, we're only going with the number here.
You can keep your entry as is until someone guesses the correct answer, then the next one (if it's decided to be 2di only) will follow that rule.
EDIT: made the change disallowing 3di for future entries.

But since there's a bit under 70 options available (compared to about 15 in guess the speed limit), I've been allowing guesses every 12 hours instead of every 24 hours to fill in for all the options, and so far, it seems like no one has taken advantage of that yet.

I kinda figured it was a rural IL tollway because of the dash style, the fact that it was only four lanes (not I-90 or I-94), and the handrail on top of the half-Jersey parapet, which is still common in IL.

I intentionally misled people by posting an image where an onramp joins the freeway. For some reason, the addlane leading into the merge is striped in this portion of the state with skip dashes rather than dotted lines (pka "puppy tracks"). The roadway is 2 lanes per carriageway, not 3 like the picture suggests. :D :pan:

https://goo.gl/maps/nnt2dx8kwtZQqg8R6
My statement of "keep going" came after people guessed I-84 and then I-74, as I hoped people would continue to subtract 10. For some reason, the offramp addlanes that eventually dissipate are separated by regular skip dashes rather than dotted lines. I don't know if it's a quirk of this stretch of Interstate in particular, or it's a thing District 8 does.
US 89 is the next guessmaster.

I personally forget I-64 goes through Illinois, my home state, because the only times I ever use I-64 are when it's in another state. Maybe it's simply my frequent travels between Cincinnati and St Louis that has me not forget that I-64 goes through the state. I've clinched I-64 (and I-70) through Illinois multiple times because of that.

I'll save y'all from the misery lol. It's I-73. I didn't think about before because despite having driven both I-40 and I-85 countless times in the area, I've never actually driven that part of the Loop! Looks like I have something to add to my to-do list.

US 101? That's just a guess.
US 101 gets to break the rules about the number of digit it has. It doesn't get to break the rules about its road classification.

That was a guess of the rule meaning, so it might be out west.

I knew it was either Texas or Louisiana based on the frontage roads and the OP's hint that I had the right region. I vacillated for a while between I-20, I-30, and I-49 before realizing they were fairly hilly (and in I-49's case, too forested). That led me to check I-45. I picked the grassiest spot which just happened to be that image. Kind of misleading, as I-45 is not very flat outside of Houston.

Yes! It is I-45 just north of Madisonville, TX, looking south.
Wow, that's not far at all from where I live, and yet, I still would have guessed I-55 in Arkansas.
I knew it was either Texas or Louisiana based on the frontage roads and the OP's hint that I had the right region. The current rules actually state that you
don't have to specify. I'm fine either way; obviously I wouldn't have gotten this one if I had to specify, but it kind of makes it more fun too. If only one of the I-76's had been guessed, it could have gone on for a very long time before someone thought to guess the other one.
Alright, no takers yet, so I'll keep us going. I will note upfront that this is not a duplicate interstate.

Wow, I must say, those trees are well disguised for being in New England. They look way more like something you'd see in the Mid-Atlantic or maybe even the South... VA, NC, etc.

Here's an overpass to guess:

I was wondering if someone would recognize the state by the little white markers at every bridge.
I was going to guess I-77 in Ohio because of the blue girders on the bridge.
I just knew it was OH because I thought the outer design of the parapets looked familiar. And it wasn't my first guess of I-70 and my instinct was that it has to be an E-W route.
Anyway, here's one of my own from my archive, taken in 2006. Blackout is of the one mile advance BGS for the next exit. I think it mostly looks the same today, but may have updated pavement markings.

Well done! Correct answer, and not too far off...
this is just east of PA 33 (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6458485,-75.2559374,3a,50.5y,40.12h,81.01t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sk4k2N0ilfQGZ6qFCoYWhAw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1). I figured the heavy truck traffic might be a tip off that this was in PA.
The pavement markings tipped me off to PA, but yes the truck traffic specifically clued me in to I-78. (Or I-81, but as that was already eliminated..)

We have a winner!
It's I-85 in Alabama, southbound (heading is more W/SW) between Exits 26 and 22, near the town of Shorter. Up ahead just before Exit 22, off to the left, you can see a parking structure for VictoryLand Casino. It currently only operates as a casino only, as the hotel and restaurants have been closed for a few years (not sure if the greyhound track is still open or not). The State of Alabama had been trying to shut it down for several years, but a judge ordered it back open.

That's I-29 (https://goo.gl/maps/2nMCisvYgoa2j2w1A). Having most of the guesses already used up did help, but I was pretty certain based on the terrain (and the region hint) that this was NW Missouri.
Nice, and you saved me from sharing the link! Yes, I think a lot of people (myself included) associate I-29 with the flat Great Plains terrain, so I chose a hillier and forested spot in Missouri to be tricky. :D
Wow, that really did look like parts of I-81 in NY, although I knew it wasn't NY when I saw the rumble strips!
The current one also looks a bit like NY... but with I-81 already guessed, I'll go elsewhere: I-77?

Ah ok. I could tell it was Mississippi due to the lack of black stripes and the double jersey barrier. It was just a guessing game of 10, 20, 55, and 59 (22 doesn't have enough lanes).

It was indeed the guardrail, in combination with the pavement markings, that clued me in to MD...and then from there, I-68 is the only one of the six 2di's that is that quiet :-D But good work picking the one spot on I-68 that doesn't really feel like the rest of I-68! Strangely I can often tell whether a road is N/S or E/W... I don't know that I can put it in to words exactly, and it's not like I have any "rules" or anything for figuring it out, but N/S roads just have different "vibes" than E/W ones. The direction and angle of the sun is a factor too if you can figure out where it is.
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean anything if it's a road that's running at an angle or in a direction contrary to how it's signed. I guess we'll see if I'm right on this one. :D

I would argue by the sun on that building on the left that it's N/S and this was taken around noon. It looks pretty parallel to the building from this angle, and if you were heading dead east or west, it would never be at that angle unless you were on the Tropic of Cancer, which obviously this picture is not.

From what I've found it looks to be exactly like a tied-arch suspension bridge. But you can correct me if I'm wrong of course.
I never thought of a tied arch being a type of suspension bridge... but I guess it could be.
I've got it now - I-39 over the Illinois River.
I will say, this was a tougher than expected because there are actually a bunch of bridges that look like this, including I-70 in Wheeling (which is what my previous guess was based on).

My original thoughts as well before I found it was I-24 over the Ohio River. Looked at the GSV and verified it wasn't quite the same bridge. Also, the scenery was off, and the bridge had no lampposts.

This one is definitely not I-72, I've been all over this interstate. The Mississippi river bridge on I-72 is a truss bridge, this is a suspension bridge. :-D

Couldn't remember what type of bridge I-72 had over the Mississippi, and I was too lazy to look it up.
And I knew it wasn't I-24 because the barrier wall and parapets are totally different.

Sweet! The thin rumble strips also led me to I-69, but I quickly found out that the thin spots weren't next to any exit, and every exit I looked at that had a straight shot forward was wrong, and the more I looked, the more I didn't see any fences. I'll get one up soon.

I was still planning on waiting 24 hours because I felt like I had been doing too well lately and wanted to give others a chance.

Technically, the rule is 12 hours. I guess I should have mentioned that sooner, because, as you may know...

Darn, and I go the direction mostly wrong too. I thought the sun was more on the side for some reason.
Sweet. I'll post in just a bit.
I thought it was a state that was Illinois-adjacent, but not Illinois, because Illinois doesn't use exit tabs that are that large. I decided to think to go east, since I know Indiana will sometimes use exit tabs that are larger. I should have thought to go north!

Can't find the thread ATM, but
jeffandnicole once described it elsewhere on the forum as "something a PTC official's child came up with for a high school project" (probably not the exact quote, but that was the gist of it) and I got a good laugh out of that :-D I don't think there's any "crazy barrier" remaining on the PA Turnpike now, so that stretch of I-83 between Maryland & York might be the last bit of it hanging on.

You got it! Looking southbound in Mississippi. Your turn.
I got the state right too! The narrow shoulders made me think Mississippi, and the straight shot with little traffic reminded me of I-59. I've only driven I-10, I-55, and I-59 through MS.

South Carolina uses this type of railing in a few places, but at every place that I've seen it, it's going over a highway with >4 lanes. So I'm gonna guess NY and just say I-81.
Incorrect guesses:
81
I'm thinking Pennsylvania, so I will say I-80.
No guess on the 2di in question, but I do love the old school Lead Splice Cases of the telephone lines above the overpass. Probably paper-insulated copper conductors inside those old splices
That said, that was common telephone line outside plant circa 1960, so this has to be an older area - probably one of the "original" interstates. Later into the 60s and onward, plastic-insulated copper (PIC) became the standard, and that does not need pressure-sealed closures and splices, so Lead Sheath went out of style
If the 2di in question is not identified within the next few days, I may cross-post this picture into a Telephone Techs FB group I'm part of, see if anyone has worked on this cable run, or at least knows where it is

I don't drive that segment very often, even tho I live pretty close to it! Reason being, if I'm going north I get on I-57 either in Marion or in West Frankfort, or sometimes even up around Mt Vernon or even Salem if I really want to dodge the Marion-Mt Vernon segment, and if I'm going south, I usually get on south of Anna where SB US 51 merges onto SB I-57
That said, that does look like I-57 south of the I-24 split
For the record, really in this part of Illinois, it is not that flat. Far Southern IL is part of the state that is really not the flattest. Alto Pass isn't too far away from here, neither is the Garden of the Gods, nor is the Litte Grand Canyon...these are not the common Flat Lander features of most of the Prairie State
All that said, onto the next play:

I have driven through that section many times when I drove for an expedited company out of Cincinnati plus this is the way I would travel home in Northern Kentucky from the Syracuse area after visiting my relatives there. I saw the photo and thought that looks like I-90 around the Buffalo area, specifically near the Walden Galleria. I checked on GSV and was correct.
Nice job picking up on those details! I've driven it many times too but I picked the spot because I wasn't sure I could have gotten it myself. This part of I-90 looks very Midwestern to me (and indeed it is by NY standards).

Much of the Thruway from the Montezuma NWR west to the Pennsylvania line does have more of a Midwestern feel than an East Coast feel. I believe I posted this thought in another thread discussing where one feels a section of our country changes from one "feel" to another "feel".

That is correct!
I'm assuming this railroad overpass was part of an older road system... the highway seems to basically touch VA-632 (which I'm guessing used to be US-60) just before it, then widen out significantly to the east.
I-64 between Clifton Forge and Covington certainly shows its age with the narrow median and constrained right of way compared to the much obviously newer segments to the east and west of this. It looks like a limited access upgrade of a previously existing arterial alignment done in the 1950s or 1960s.

Nice connection. I got too hung up on the name Niagara, rather than thinking about waterfalls. (I found a community in Kentucky called Niagara, hence the I-69 guess.)

Of course, American Falls is one of the two main waterfalls at Niagara. Great clue and well done, Corey Samson.

1200 miles from NYC (using that for the 1200 miles off clue from I-87), using Google Maps distance tool, is a little west, or north, or south of Kansas City. 35, 40, 44, 70 have already been guessed in that general area. That does leave a few others in the lower plains area...
New Orleans is also right around 1200 miles. Florida is out, as 1200 miles is between Cuba and Key West
Going north, Fargo is also about 1200 miles from NYC
The 1200 miles from NYC arc is pretty close to the I-29/49 corridor
I'll guess I-29

Depending what point from I-87 we are measuring, that 1200 miles doesn't leave a lot of territory in the SE. New Orleans is still game
Even measuring from 87's northern terminus at the Canadian border, Orlando is in play, arcing up towards Tallahassee then Panama City along the Gulf Coast over towards NOLA
And yes, I completely missed the Region reveal. I was concentrating on the 1200 mile hint
