Routes signed in neighboring countries
« on: May 11, 2023, 09:47:59 AM »

I searched and didn't see a thread about this, so I'm a bit curious about something. How often do localities in one country sign routes that are in a neighboring country?

I'm talking situations like what happens in Quebec where interstates in the U.S. (as well as US 201) appear on signage for the autoroutes that connect to them, or New Brunswick signing I-95 or US 1.

In the 1980s and 90s, "Interstate 81" was signed in all text along ON 137 between the 1000 Islands Bridge and ON 401.  I believe today it's an I-81 marker on the guide signs on ON 401 and overhead signs on ON 137.

Taken in 1998:

I assume lots of border communities in Canada have them.  But further interior would be rarer.

Here's an I-15 shield in Lethbridge. 100 km from the border: https://goo.gl/maps/XFQCS3cDbfuE1ZNo6

At least in 2001 (no GMSV imagery, nor any more recent photos), there was a Yukon route 9 sign at Tetlin Junction AK, where AK 5 splits from AK 2 (Alaska Hwy). Tetlin Jct is more than 100 miles from YT 9.

A-15 is signed in many places along I-87 (but strangely enough, not the interchange where that's the only place I-87 goes).  The furthest south is Lake George.

The last link matches the second.

You caught me trying to debug why Google didn't change the URL in the address bar like it was supposed to.

I've found that the URL continuously updates for about three minutes if I'm using it (don't know whether it's based on usage or time), and then it suddenly stops updating the URL for some reason. This is consistently the case on Safari on my laptop.

The opposite is also true:

And ON signs NY 37 from ON 401... as well as the nonexistent US 37:

Here's an example of NYSDOT signing ON 401 along Interstate 81 in Watertown, N.Y.

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.9934503,-75.9379991,3a,75y,42.88h,85.44t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNzBpgObv6SDwco4az-af0g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

The reverse exists as well: https://goo.gl/maps/xgsJdNxM9MEBKDcR8
There are a series of TO ON 401 trailblazers along I-81 northbound, too.

A very poor quality picture (you try keeping the bugs off your windshield in June in Alaska!), but here's Yukon 9 signed in Alaska way back on June 14, 2001.

There are quite a few between Canada and the US. Ten minutes in Google Earth came up with these:

BC-99 and former US-99, now I-5
BC-97 and US-97
BC-395 and US-395
BC-95 and US-95
BC-93 and US-93
MB-83 and US-83
MB-75 and US-75
MB-89 and MN-89
MB-310 and MN-310
ON-11 and MN-11
ON-71 and US-71
ON-61 and MN-61
QC-225 and VT-225
QC-235 and VT-235
QC-139 and VT-139
QC-243 and VT-243
QC-141 and VT-141
NB-95 and I-95

I've been over the first three crossings.

Before MB 75 was rebuilt a few years ago, you could find this I-29 shield on the old route that led to US 75 before that border crossing was closed.

I remember that Lake George, NY used to sign Autoroute 15 for I-87 on US 9.

There are a couple of I-5 shields on the overhead signage near the San Ysidro crossing.
