Figure we should have a general rolling thread for all earthquakes.
Today's entry: a 6.5 event northeast of Boise, Idaho. Epicenter is coincidentally near "Shake Creek".
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us70008jr5/executive
Note that this is less than two weeks after a 5.7 earthquake in Salt Lake City (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/uu60363602/executive). Although that one was smaller in terms of magnitude, it produced more damage overall because it occurred much closer to populated areas, and the shaking intensity was equivalent because the geology of the Salt Lake Valley is more favorable for earthquake wave transmission.
We're still getting aftershocks from that, by the way. The vast majority of them are too small to feel, but every few days now there's a slightly stronger one that's felt close to the epicenter. In fact, we had some light shaking from the Idaho earthquake today and most people assumed it was just another aftershock.
This is the website I look at twice daily to get a forewarning (maybe) for the Cascadia Subduction Zone megaquake:
https://pnsn.org/earthquakes/recent
Earlier I read that when the Big One hits the PNW, it has a 30% chance of triggering the San Andreas Fault. If you think the coronavirus pandemic is a big deal, just wait until you lose a million or more people and the entire productivity of the West Coast.
After reading about the big hits to Boise and Salt Lake City, how about this to make everything else look very small: Supervolcano eruption at Yellowstone. This would be right on the cusp of a human species extinction event.
Want to really finish us off? After seeing all the above happen, there goes any space monitoring for small celestial bodies which could collide with the Earth. Along one comes just at the right/wrong time. Watch it land right on top of Wuhan...LOL!
If this stuff wasn't so serious, it would be fun to see someone make the biggest string of disasters movie one could create. Do it "Airplane" style!

5.1 magnitude here in North Carolina this morning. First time I've ever felt a quake. Honestly, it was kind of startling at first. First I felt a jolt in my legs, I heard kind of a thud, then I noticed the shaking, both saw it and felt it. Stuff on my desk was shaking, I could feel it in my legs, and it knocked a can of bug spray off my desk. Strongest quake for NC in 104 years. It was done and over with in like 10 seconds but I'll be damned if it wasn't something.

I felt it, but nothing was knocked over or flew off the shelves. I assumed it was just a big truck going by my house and didn't think anything of it. I wouldn't have known it was a quake if I hadn't read the news.
The first earthquake I ever felt was the one that hit the East Coast in 2011. I was living in Farmville, VA at the time. I damn sure didn't need to see the news to know what that shaking and boom was!

Felt by many in eastern Kentucky as well.
Supposedly yesterday's quake was felt around here, but I didn't notice it. I believe it was just after 8:00 AM. I had been out of bed for less than five minutes at that point and I doubt I was fully awake yet. I didn't notice the 2011 Virginia earthquake either. I was driving my RX-7 on the Beltway with the top down when it happened and I just didn't notice; moreover, if I had noticed anything, I'm sure I'd have discounted it as the car's suspension or buffeting from a passing truck. First I knew of the 2011 quake was when I got a text message from my brother about it.
I'm about 60 miles from this one and I slept right through it. I guess the mountains acted as shock-absorbers!
Despite living on the Ring of Fire, I have still yet to feel an actual earthquake. I slept through our last minor earthquake and was too young to remember the Nisqually earthquake in 2001 (M 6.7)
Only earthquake I ever felt was the July 1981 event with an epicenter near Sharpsburg, Ky. I was taking a shower when it happened and just felt one big "thump" or "thud." Like someone had dropped something heavy. My mom came in the bathroom to see if I had slipped and fallen. Her next step was to go downstairs to see if my brother had blown something up. :-D
Only later, when television news broke in with the story, did we realize what happened.
Several years later, there was a quake near Clays Ferry, where there's a known fault (think about that one the next time you drive across the I-75 Kentucky River bridge there). My brother was going to college in Richmond and he felt it. I'm only about 40 miles or less as the crow flies from there, but didn't feel it. He called to ask if we'd felt anything, and my dad and I both said no. Then on the news at 11 p.m., they confirmed a minor quake.
Earthquakes I've experienced:
--1982? Pioneer Valley, western MA. Just a little shaker
--1997, San Francisco -- another little shaker, but I was eating in a Korean hot pot restaurant at the time -- jiggled the building slightly. Learned later on that a female co-worker from Utah in a different part of the city tried to take a picture of it.
--A few years ago, Capital District, NY. A minor earthquake sent a few of my co-workers running out of our building.
I think that's it.
I was awoken in the middle of the night in my Juneau hotel room in 2014 by a nice little 5.9 about 90 miles west. One of those deals where by the time you realize what's going on, it's over. I often wonder if I would have just slept right through if I wasn't on the 5th floor.
I remember the only damage was to the internet. The quake took out some underwater cable in the region and main ISP was offline. It even affected cell tower data. Would have sucked if we weren't leaving the next morning for Ketchikan. No internet on the ferries anyway, so no big deal.

Fortunately for New Zealand, this one didn't occur under them but several hundred miles north.
It did cause a tsunami watch for Hawaii, but fortunately, it wasn't big enough to cause anything noticeable. I think I read the buoy system detected a 3 cm wave.
Those underwater quakes can be tricky. Usually you need a mid to upper 8 or larger for there to be enough movement to cause a tsunami. Unless the quake triggers an underwater landslide, in which case the threshold of earthquake magnitude to worry about a tsunami is a lot lower.

All the tremors have been located 5 km underground, and all within a half-mile of Charles and David Koch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_family)'s property. So, as I figure it, Charles Koch must be digging a hole to the center of the earth. It's the only explanation.

Cumbre Vieja in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) has started erupting earlier today. This was preceded by an earthquake swarm over the last few days, as it's usual with volcanoes that are about to erupt. Don't worry, there's no risk of part of that island collapsing into the ocean and triggering a mega-tsunami that would destroy most of the East Coast (that is impossible to happen).

It would be a very 2021 thing if it happened, though. ;)
Undersea quakes, volcanoes and landslides are all about displacement of water. If it's a slip fault that goes, the displacement will be minimal. If it's a thrust fault like off Indonesia in 2004, that's a heap of trouble. Landslide tsunamis tend to be localized but can cause great damage.
After a few months of quiescence, Kilauea is burping up more lava again. It's all within the main crater so it ain't going anywhere, but still interesting because it shows how restless that volcano is. It's been erupting for the vast majority of my life with only two breaks in the action.

I didn't realize until reading up moments ago about all the contradictory modeling about the effect of a tsunami around the Atlantic coastline if the collapse of the volcano were to occur.
I guess the east coast of the US is safe from a mega-tsunami, but a 1-2m tsunami along the entire coast would still cost billions in damage. I think it was quite overlooked that you had 1 death and $100M in damage in California from the tsunami from the 2011 Japan quake.
Hopefully none of us will live thru the answer as to what will possibly happen. Meanwhile I'll take solace in my 170' ASL and 25 miles inland location.

That La Cumbre Vieja eruption mentioned upthread lasted 86 days and did a ton of damage to the western flank of the island, but also added land to La Palma. It's the longest eruption in recorded history for the island dating back like a thousand years. Since no one got killed or hurt and the lava moved slow enough for everyone to get their shit out of harm's way, it was about as good as it gets for a billion dollar disaster.

The eruption was captured by satellites and basically decimated its island (not a populated one, mind you):
https://twitter.com/US_Stormwatch/status/1482229220415721475
The tsunami made its way across the Pacific and killed 2 people in Peru and forced a few rescues in the U.S. People didn't take the hours of advance warning seriously.
Here is an update on the Tonga Volcano.
This was a fascinating eruption. Not only was the erupted ash visible on satellite, but so was the shockwave that was sent out in all directions (and was heard as far away as Alaska). The pressure wave was observed on barometers around the world - in many cases twice over, the second time from the opposite direction.
Pending further analysis, this was likely the largest eruption this planet has seen this century, and could be the biggest since Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991. Although the tsunami generated was not particularly large in most cases, it is probably the most significant volcanic tsunami in over 100 years (most tsunamis are generated by large earthquakes).

Looks like there was some minor damage to the old (built in 1911) Fernbridge over the Eel River.

I seriously don't know how the Fernbridge has managed to survive this long between all the floods and earthquakes it has been through. Probably the only reason it was retained after the 1964 Christmas Floods was that it was repairable when so many other structures (like the Douglas Memorial Bridge) were not.

I believe that was the last time it has been rehabilitated. Quite the achievement getting a fair or satisfactory rating out of a structure as old as the Fernbridge.

Colombia urges evacuation near volcano.
https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230429-colombia-urges-evacuation-near-volcano
QuoteThe Disaster Risk Management Office said it was moving to evacuate communities that are located within 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the main crater of three that make up the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in the Colombian Andes.
Seismic activity has increased at the volcano, which killed 25,000 people in an eruption in 1985.
That blast was the worst natural disaster in Colombian history and one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century.
There has recently been a "significant increase in seismic activity," the ministry of mines said in a statement while Colombia's SGC geological service warned of a "probable eruption within days or weeks."
The 5,300-meter (17,400-foot) colossus in western Colombia is one of the many volcanoes along the Ring of Fire, a path around the Pacific basin characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
Good to point out that most of the deaths were from a massive lahar unleashed by the eruption that extended will beyond the pyroclastic flows. Thousands were buried by the mix of melted glacier, ash and rock because it hit their homes at night.
Emergency planners learned some harsh lessons.
So I can understand the caution.

Woah if this is correct a 5.6 quake and a death of 154 then again it calls into question how the building codes are even considered leading up to this in Nepal.
If a modest sized earthquake kills hundreds or thousands of people, that's how you can tell your human development index is pretty low.
Of course I say that living in a place where sustainable forestry is an easy reality. Lumber is gonna be way more expensive when practically one's entire country is above the timberline, so they're stuck with masonry for most structures.

QuoteHUALIEN, Taiwan, April 3 (Reuters) - Taiwan's biggest earthquake in at least 25 years killed nine people on Wednesday and injured more than 900, while 50 workers travelling in minibuses to a hotel in a national park were missing. Some buildings tilted at precarious angles in the mountainous, sparsely populated county of Hualien, near the epicentre of the 7.2 magnitude quake, which struck just offshore at about 8 a. m. (0000 GMT) and triggered massive landslides. Linda Chen, 48, said her apartment in downtown Hualien city had been so badly damaged in an earlier earthquake in 2018 that they had to move house. But her new apartment block was damaged too in the latest earthquake. "We worry the house could collapse anytime. We thought we had already experienced it once in Hualien and it would not hit us again, because God has to be fair," she said.

Speaking of the Taiwan earthquake, I did not feel it here in Okinawa, though we did have to evacuate away from the coast because of a tsunami warning (the main arteries became one-way for a bit). QuoteMANADO, Indonesia (AP) — More than 2,100 people living near an erupting on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island were evacuated Friday due to the dangers of spreading ash, falling rocks, hot volcanic clouds and the possibility of a tsunami.
Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation recorded at least three eruptions since Friday afternoon, with the maximum height of the eruption column reaching 1,200 meters (3,900 feet).
An international airport in Manado city, less than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the erupting Mount Ruang, is still temporarily closed as volcanic ash was spewed into the air.
Satellite imagery from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency shows the ash has spread to the west, northwest, northeast and southeast, covering Manado and North Minahasa, according to a statement from Indonesia's Transportation Ministry
