NE Wisconsin Spin Gathering?

This makes me think of a road meet having a stop at a local playground so the attendees can stretch their legs and get on the merry-go-round for a while.

(When I was a kid, the merry-go-round at the playground had an octagonal piece of metal in the center of it. For some reason, five-year-old me was convinced it was a face-down stop sign bolted there for some reason. I guess I didn't see many other kinds of octagonal things at that point in my life.)

I wonder if it covered up an octagon-shaped gap in the middle.  When I was a kid, the merry-go-round in the grade school playground didn't have a floor in the middle (I can't remember if it was hexagonal or octagonal).  So one of us would climb down into the middle and push from right near the pivot, rather than pushing from the outside.  This allowed the merry-go-round to be spun so fast that the rest of us (those like me who were brave enough, anyway) could hold onto one of the outside bars with our hands while centrifugal force flung the rest of our bodies up in the air.  If anyone else got too close, they were getting a fast-moving pair of shoes to the gut.  And if we lost our grip, we'd go skidding on our bellies across the playground–which was asphalt.
