Title: Abandoned bridge finds
Post by: FLRoads on June 01, 2010, 06:56:20 PM
A couple of long ago abandoned truss bridges in southeastern Mississippi:

Old truss bridge on what was probably the first alignment of U.S. 45 south of Quitman. One has to walk through some woods to get to this bridge. Photo taken 01/10/10.

A full-on view looking towards the north at the old bridge. The bridge ends just north of the truss section. Photo taken 01/10/10.

A view of an old truss bridge that once linked the original alignment of U.S. 49 with the small community of Brooklyn. The second bridge (now carrying MS 149 - also former U.S. 49) is just to the west of this abandoned bridge. Photo taken 05/15/10.

Another view of the once used truss bridge that carried U.S. 49 traffic. Photo taken 05/15/10.

what's with Mississippi having the huge quantity of abandoned bridges?

that is about 50 feet to the side of current US-11.

where is the one in Vicksburg?  I've never seen that one, though I've been there a couple of times.  The US-80 bridge across the Mississippi river is recently abandoned, with the I-20 bridge serving both routes.  I don't have a photo of it online currently.

It's on Fairground St, off old US 61. Goes over the railroad yard.

Well, I do suppose that they are a bit harder to find when they're covered with kudzu!

One day I was goofing around on Terraserver one day (this was pre-Google Maps) and found this suspicious looking structure crossing the river:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi167.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu126%2Fbugo348%2Fbigelowbridge.jpg%3Ft%3D1275452011&hash=ad4b7b856efd2b61e7fdb43552cf314347fbcadc)

I was in Conway for a historic bridge exhibit at UCA so I decided to drive to Bigelow to check out the suspected bridge.  I drove about a mile down an abandoned road on top of a levee until I couldn't drive any further, then I got out and walked.  Here's what I found:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4013%2F4661848673_96158268fb_o.jpg&hash=06d93bfbb20383e9e68d1e9ce6f65ec813d7ba1a)

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4068%2F4662470336_bee0b2bf26_o.jpg&hash=9eff81995deef22a8c44236c329f1b2ed2960fce)

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm2.static.flickr.com%2F1294%2F4661848521_b17d3586bb_o.jpg&hash=d01305f811cca96f6d64917fbca181f296d0b6fd)

This is the Bigelow Bridge in Bigelow, AR.  It once carried a railroad and later was retrofitted for road traffic.  At one time it was part of AR 113 Spur.  Before I found the bridge, there were no pictures on the internet of this bridge and a Google search found no mentions of the bridge.  Now there are pictures by several photographers available on Bridgehunter that started showing up soon after I posted my pictures.  I like to think that I "discovered" the bridge.  Most truss bridges are known by the bridgehunting community so it's exciting to find one that was previously unknown.

One good sized flood might just wash it away.

On a 2007 UP vacation, I took some shots of a couple of old bridges on a former alignment of US 41/M28 in Baraga County.  The highway has reverted to an overgrown, two track gravel road that functions as a snowmobile trail in winter.
Location:
http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=46.56618,-88.31905&z=15&t=S&marker0=46.54133%2C-88.53708%2Ccovington\%2C%20mi (http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=46.56618,-88.31905&z=15&t=S&marker0=46.54133%2C-88.53708%2Ccovington%5C%2C%20mi)

First one is over the Tioga River:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn208%2Ftriplemultiplex%2FUS%252053%2520Oct%252005%2FUP%252007%2FUP044.jpg%3Ft%3D1275689836&hash=a600ab8f9265be0e35c1f9176b44e7288f644c66)

Second one was partially collapsed and smaller, prefab steel bridge with a wooden deck had been placed on top of it.  It crosses Lateral Creek.
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi113.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn208%2Ftriplemultiplex%2FUS%252053%2520Oct%252005%2FUP%252007%2FUP046.jpg%3Ft%3D1275690071&hash=3f588056055ed9106cc496c98c7090940969e1e7)

Even cooler was this spot a mile or two west of the bridges where the old highway crossed an equally long abandoned railroad.  The fact that the rails and ties are still in place after all these decades makes it pretty unique for this part of the country.

Judging by the age of the vegetation in the path of whatever logging road used this bridge and the decay of the planks, it has be at least 50 years since it last saw a vehicle.  It might even predate WWII. I'm usually good at picking out old road grades and skid trails in the woods but in this case I could not tell where the old road went.  What a cool find.  I like how part of the fence/guard rail is still intact.

The rail bridge?

Or the Mill Dam Road bridge, which I don't think I've seen, even though I grew up in Smithtown.

Two bridge abutments (one I have yet to photograph)

The first is the Point Pleasant-Byram Bridge over the Delaware River. The bridge, considered a money loser, was demolished (the truss portion) in Hurricane Diane in 1955.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3214%2F3069790018_da7c3d7879.jpg&hash=0d9b159477c447f19946d3d1ee3bbd1567e7be3b)

The second is the old Changewater Truss Bridge in Changewater, New Jersey. The truss bridge served the Hampton Branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad was dismantled in 1958, but not yet without death. Someone fell to his death from the bridge, which lasted high above Changewater. The truss bridge's large piers stand on Changewater Road, they are definitely something to see. (No photos yet)

No, it's north of the rail bridge, but south of the bridge that currently serves Routes 25-25A. The Mill Dam Road bridge you're thinking of is on a private road(I almost though you were talking about the one in Centerport). This looks like it might've been Old Jericho Turnpike 75-100 years ago, and could still serve as a pedestrian crossing if Suffolk County Department of Parks & Recreation would clean up the brush blocking the old ROW.

Aw, dammit! I could've taken a pic of one that runs parallel to New York State Route 25-25A over the Nissequogue River!

Grabbed a picture of said bridge yesterday, and it's currently still on my camera.  It is a small pony truss bridge, but I'm not sure if it's the old bridge for NY 25/NY 25A, since it's so very narrow.

Still there in the 1954 historic aerial next to the modern road.  Could have been the original 1920's or earlier bridge on the original road, is all I can guess.

Late to the party here, but here's my favorite abandoned bridge in Indiana, a concrete arch that carried US 40 just west of Plainfield, Indiana, until the 1930s.  Deck:

Abandoned, never used bridge on US 50 west of Carlyle, IL.  There are several of these in an area where US 50 was planned to be an expressway but it never materialized.

This isn't much of a picture of this (I thought) abandoned bridge on Old SR 37 in Indiana near Martinsville, but it's noteworthy because it's less abandoned and more private property, which I learned when the police officer came to chase me away.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Is the map online, or do I have wait for another return trip to New York to find it in a library's historic archives?

This is what I like about the United States. You wouldn't find much abandoned stuff in Europe, especially not the Netherlands which tend to be compulsively neat to perfect everything.

This is an old thread, but I have to revive it. I found something very interesting while doing some research on the old Newark City Subway. East of the Orange Street station is a four-lane divided highway bridge over the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Main Line between Orange Street and I-280. What was that supposed to be?

Here's one down at Ditto Landing in Huntsville, AL. There's also a "Road Work Ahead" sign facing the bridge that's left over from when they were building a new bridge on US 231 over the Tennessee River.

According to that site it is used as a walkway for a fishing pier, and USGS river survey equipment in the middle of the river.

Not really a 'find', but there's always the Beesley's Point Bridge just south of Somers Point, NJ (former/about to be former US9).

When are they getting around to permanently signing US9 over the Garden State Parkway bridge?

If you look at street view at the east end (https://www.google.com/maps/place/41%C2%B024%2737.5%22N+73%C2%B037%2720.6%22W/@41.409366,-73.620355,3a,15y,285.6h,80.12t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sjo9-Psua-a8gpj09gW-ZLw!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0), the image is from August 2012 and construction signage says the bridge is closed "July 21 until further notice". The road does appear slightly overgrown, though, so that sign could be a couple years old in that image.

I would guess that this bridge probably was deemed unfit for traffic after a safety inspection and is now sitting in limbo waiting for the town of Southeast to either find the money to replace it or decide to permanently remove it.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.410415,-73.622388&ll=41.410423,-73.622355&spn=0.000802,0.002064&num=1&t=h&z=20
Damn! If that road were still open, you could go from the Harlem Line towards the Beacon Line almost in a straight line!

Notice the strange triple guardrail with red stripes. There's one in Denton, Tx; and since it's incorrect, I didn't expect to see another one.

There was originally a standard wood type 3 barricade here. It was replaced when it rotted and fell down.

The US277 bridge across the Canadian River at Newcastle, OK in November 2011, about 6 months before the tornado tore it up.  Built in 1929, it was abandoned upon completion of the "new" US62 bridge just to the east of it.

Not sure if abandoned bridges that are usually underwater count, but here is the Great Crossings Bridge (built in 1818) that carried the National Road over the Youghiogheny River in Somerfield, PA.  The bridge (and Somerfield) were submerged in the 1940s when the Youghiogheny Dam was built downstream.  Periodically (during periods of lake drawdown or severe droughts), the bridge and the foundations of Somerfield will be visible.  The bridge has held together very well for being 198 years old and having been submerged for almost 70 of them.

There are a number of neat old abandoned bridges in Ohio. This one is near the town of Zoar, not too far south of Canton. The "new" bridge which carries Tuscarawas County Rd 82 was built in the early-to-mid 1960's, I believe.

I just found an old truss bridge near Inola, Oklahoma. It is a rather large humpback through truss bridge that is about 175' long that is sitting over a small creek. It is not listed on bridgehunter.com and I don't think anybody in the road community knows about it. I'm going to go check it out in a couple of days.

Since so much time I travel the ON-401, I saw that bridge for the first time when I came from North Carolina last Saturday.  Didn't have time to take pictures, so I'll have to rely on Google Maps to let you see. It's over the Hoople Creek, just after exit 770 EB on ON-401, close to Ingleside, Ontario, Canada.

With Google Street View, this time.  Hard to see, with the sun's reflect.

I believe the old bridge that connected West Prestonsburg, KY to Prestonsburg, KY is still there (Bridge Street).  My aunt and uncle used to live right near the west end of it.  Always wondered how it fell out of use, even with the newer bridge connecting to now KY-114 (Old US 23/460).

Don't know when I will be back down there to take a picture.

It is kinda neat, checking it out from the ground in the park below it

Further South...

The New Harmony, IN bridge to IL across the Wabash has not been mentioned, either. I believe it used to carry US 460, before being Decommissioned in IL and IN

And parallel and to the North of I-64, crossing the Wabash between IL and IN, is an abandoned rail bridge

US 129 is being widened between Talmo and Gainesville, GA, and I stopped to get some photos of the existing 1940 bridge over Allen Creek, which clearly won't survive the widening. To my delighted surprise, I found the 1940 bridge's precursor hiding in the brush less than 300 feet away. I'm too lazy to post photos unless someone asks real nice, but here it is, barely visible on Streetview (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.1939011,-83.7193457,3a,15y,245.89h,86.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sGGqpJBvRTtZyP6hqzMLzpg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656). The weird thing about it was that it was very similar in design to the 1940 bridge, as though it had been constructed less than twenty years earlier. Apparently the state's idea of how important that highway was changed decisively sometime in the '30's.

Here's a tiny bridge in Polk County, Arkansas that once carried US 270 over a tributary of the Ouachita River. It was hard to get a good picture of the entire structure because of brush.

Here's a bench mark that is embedded in the bridge, if you're into that kind of thing.

This is what I like about the United States. You wouldn't find much abandoned stuff in Europe, especially not the Netherlands which tend to be compulsively neat to perfect everything.

You'd love Oklahoma. The state is full of truss bridges, even on major state highways. Often, they will abandon an old bridge in place instead of removing it. So there are dozens of trusses in Oklahoma that are just sitting there. There are also quite a few abandoned highways. I doubt the Dutch would have much patience for such things.

This is another abandoned bridge next US 270, along its concurrency with US 71 just east of Acorn, Arkansas. It was on a former alignment of US 71-270.

Here's a view of a not-really-abandoned bridge, in Chateauguay, QC, along the chemin St-Bernard (St. Bernard road). Images are from Google Earth.

In the 1970's, plenty of highway projects were flourishing in province of Quebec.  Among them, there was A-30 extension from south shore of Montreal to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, then to the US border close to NY-30 at Trout River. The original ROW was along the QC-132, from the A-15, across Candiac, Ste-Catherine and St-Constant, then in Kahnawake First Nation, still along the 132 to Mercier Bridge approaches, then along the 138 to the Blind Lady's Hll Road, connecting to Old Chateauguay Road, then chemin St-Bernard, in Chateauguay, and becoming boulevard de Léry afterwards, (the actual QC-132 in Léry).  Some investments were already done when the project was definitely killed, like a double bridge along Chemin St-Bernard, built for the two carriageways of the future A-30. Registered as P-01720, the northwest bridge actually holds a bike path while chemin St-Bernard still use the southeast bridge.

You don't "find" bridges on Bridgehunter. I love Bridgehunter, but it is sort of like cheating. The bridges I posted above were not on Bridgehunter until I discovered them via satellite photography and I visited the bridge sites and took pictures of the structures. Before Bridgehunter and satellite photography, finding bridges was an adventure. I used county maps and looked for possible truss bridges and drove to the sites. There was no way to verify if the bridge was still there or if there ever was an interesting bridge there until you visit the site in the field. Another tactic that occasionally paid off was stopping at a local gas station and asking the clerk if they knew of any old bridges in the area. There was a lot of letdown and heartbreak but when I did discover a bridge, it was a rush like no other. Visiting the two bridges I posted above was the closest thing to that feeling that I've had since Bridgehunter and Google Maps and its contemporaries. It was an amazing feeling when you were on a road you had never been on and you round a curve and a truss that you didn't know was there appears out of nowhere or you visited a site in the field and found a truss. I drove many miles and down many county roads and state highways looking for bridges. I came home empty handed many times and I visited many potential sites just to be let down by an ugly modern bridge. It was trial and error.

On the other hand, I lived in a metropolitan area in 2001 and 2002. When Bridgehunter came online, I saw pictures of many bridges in the metro that I had no idea were there. If Bridgehunter had existed in its current form then, I would have visited and photographed dozens of bridges, many which have been torn down since I moved away. The modern internet has been a double edged sword and whether the hobby is better now or then is all opinion. I think it has been both good and bad. Since I am older and don't have as much time to visit possible bridge sites, having the resources has been invaluable. I'm glad Bridgehunter and satellite photography are there today but I'm also glad that I got to experience the pre-internet era when you had to gamble and drive long miles in the hopes of finding an old truss from the 1800s.

The internet has changed the game completely.

Close to ten years ago, I did many entries on my blog about a bridge located on a small road that was open until the 1970's, and then was replaced by the Gerin Road, a more modern one.  That old road connected two villages in the Mauricie region, St. Justin, and Ste. Ursule.  The blog entries are in French, sorry about that.  But the pictures are in the language you want.

Here are the links; once there, just click on the pictures for larger views.

You don't "find" bridges on Bridgehunter. I love Bridgehunter, but it is sort of like cheating.

Apparently danthecatrafficlightfan "finds" them on Google, though...

Abandoned bridges were a lot more fun when we were posting stuff we'd find out on the roads, this google image stuff has gotten long in the tooth.

You mean to tell me that going out and actually seeing abandoned bridges (or, failing that, at least seeing good pictures someone else took) is way more interesting? No way! ;-)

For what it's worth I plan on posting my photos from this last weekend of the 1850s Bidwell Bar Bridge which was on the Middle Fork Feather River...hopefully that puts us back on track.

Had a look at the 1856 Bidwell Bar Suspension Bridge which used to span the Middle Fork Feather River before it was moved in 1966 during the creation of Lake Oroville.  Bidwell Bar Bridge was apparently opened to vehicle traffic until the mid-1950s before it was taken out of service.  I'm fairly certain this was first suspension bridge in California and is it kind of amazing to me that it survived the floods in the 1860s.  Now it's sitting about Lake Oroville at Bidwill Canyon Marina:

Suffice to say the replacement Bidwell Bridge on CA 162 is quite the looker:

This is not the only abandoned truss bridge with missing spans in Oklahoma. There is truss span near I-44 southwest of OKC that was destroyed by a tornado with only one extant span. This one is near Bernice. I don't get it either. It doesn't make sense to me. Things like this make me shake my head and say "It's Oklahoma." There are so many things in Oklahoma that make zero sense, but I've found it futile to try to understand and make rational observations of strange things about the state. Oklahoma is strange...in some ways this is an awesome strange but a bad strange in others. If I've learned anything in the dozen years or so I've lived in Oklahoma is that there are no hard rules and some things don't make sense.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190222/62aac93b3898825988c0ae104d7aaad1.jpg)

Is that a missing section of it laying in the water? I found it on GSV and on GSV it has the first two sections in tact probably not very safely though and the third section is missing and that's all of the bridge that's in GSV.

Not much of a "find", since it's obvious to anyone driving Alaska's McCarthy Road to visit the old Kennecott mine in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. But here's an old railroad trestle parallel to the road (rail line abandoned 1938, with the road later built on or along the old trackbed):

looks like it could collapse at any moment

Looks rickety. But until 1938, it carried heavy ore trains with no issues. Now, it only has to support its own weight.

The National Park Service lets pedestrians walk under the trestle, but not on it.

and using all lowercase letters is just annoying and it is hard to read.

I sometimes posted in all lowercase letters for about the first month I was online and I quickly grew out of it.

Not sure if this fits, but I've never seen something like this before:

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7880/47171311091_b1235f7643.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2eSnin6)

Although not navigable, I would think the Corps would insist this be cleaned up.
Is that a missing section of it laying in the water? I found it on GSV and on GSV it has the first two sections in tact probably not very safely though and the third section is missing and that's all of the bridge that's in GSV.

http://www.newson6.com/story/30856546/flooding-wipes-out-part-of-iconic-mayes-county-bridge

So the answer is the span got swept off the piers in the 2015 flood, landed downstream, and they are going to leave it there.

Here's a nice old concrete bridge at St. George's Newfoundland. It was along the original highway.....still under construction down the west coast of the island to the ferry terminal at Port-aux-Basques when this map was issued in 1949....the year Newfoundland became part of Canada.

An adjacent two lane bridge replaced this one and the Trans Canada Highway has long bypassed this section of road.

I guess since they moved the bridge, they probably didn't make new anchorages, hence the supports at the bottom. Should be cool to see it fre-standing, as it did whilst it was in its original place.

^^^

My assumption was that it probably way cheaper to stabilize the structure that way than to build new anchorages.

Here's one. It used to be some railroad bridge that carried freight trains from Tarboro to Farmville. It's ironic of how this structure is still standing.

This bridge is half abandoned before a new interchange was built with I-74 in 2008. I wonder what will happen to this bridge when it gets replaced!

It would be a lot cooler if you actually went out and took a photo..just sayin.
Don't go out that much, I only go out occasionally. But yeah, if I took a photo it would be a lot nicer!

Does it really count as a find if you aren't going out to confirm the Google Image?  At minimum it isn't all exciting viewing a bunch of Google Images.
I guess so? Although it's better than nothing.

I think nothing is better than spamming North Carolina Google Images on so many boards.
Alright, if you say so, I was just asking questions.

Yes, and I'm just telling you how annoying it is to see so many worthless North Carolina Google Maps posts.  Try contributing something meaning for once, it is way more fun.
Will do.

I sure hope, you don't seem to get it when people give you critical feedback.  You sure ruined this thread when others actually put serious contributions into it.  Sometimes letting a thread stay dormant is far better than wasting everyone's time with fluff.
I try to not create so many threads when asking stuff. I search for existing threads and find where my ideas fit the best in before creating another one.

Again, if you don't have anything worthwhile to add perhaps you should refrain from posting.  I can assure you the majority of us interested in abandoned bridges would be far more appreciative of someone actually going out to document them.  We get enough of this Google Image crap on Facebook groups like Roadgeekery and Freewayjim.  I know this is blunt feedback, but it almost feels like you're in denial and making excuses to just post fluff.

Two abandoned bridges I found at the bottom of Lake Kaweah to put this thread back on track.

Pre-1933 Legislative Route Number 10 at Horse Creek:

Post-1933 Legislative Route Number 10 and early CA 198 at Horse Creek:

Tolbs, this how you should be doing threads like this.  Do us a favor and save your Google Map images.

Another notable that I found in Hawaii, the 1932 Pali Road Bridge (a viaduct) which now is partially incorporated into an overlook:

Someone made a makeshift Streetview (https://www.google.com/maps/@49.3629746,-123.2602477,3a,89y,116.06h,91.05t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipM3XcKrhbZN4LJ81w6hcs5nnVP-whOOoZbrxFkW!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipM3XcKrhbZN4LJ81w6hcs5nnVP-whOOoZbrxFkW%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya236.54263-ro0-fo100!7i8704!8i4352) of this bridge that used to be part of the Upper Levels Highway (BC-99) in West Vancouver until it was re-routed and upgraded in the 1970s. It is currently used as part of a walking trail and for a pipeline of some sort. You can see the new bridge (https://www.google.com/maps/@49.3616486,-123.2600933,3a,44.1y,285.19h,86.33t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sYF1lvo5SgeaNOfYBDZtETw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) in the background.
