Kenly is a weird choice because it is not on I-795 and at population 1491 it is not a major destination. If we need to have a small burg on the sign, Fremont has population 1196 and it actually is on I-795, halfway to Goldsboro.

Let me restate my position a different way.  Instead of Exit 43B being the Kenly exit on I-795, perhaps it should be changed to the Lucama exit (which is much closer).  But it is not like through traffic to southbound US-301 using Exit 43 shouldn't have a destination whatsoever.  Before I-795 was constructed, this exit (whatever exit number it might have had) was posted for Wilson and Kenly, which made more sense back then.

Westbound Exit 43 is marked for US-301 (to I-795) to Wilson and Kenly.  But the opposing eastbound Exit 43B is marked for South US-301 with no destination, because you were supposed to use Exit 43C.  You could also make an argument that you were supposed to get off of US-264 eastbound onto I-95 to get to Kenly (instead of staying on I-795/I-587), but then should NCDOT turn the I-95 southbound exit into the Kenly exit?  The way it is marked right now, the entirety of all of offramps for Exit 43 get posted for both Wilson (northbound destination) and Kenly (southbound destination), plus you get the Control City of Goldsboro posted for I-795.  (Which, by the way, is not shown on westbound Exit 43.  Ouch!).

Sorry for the rant, but when you get lucky enough to end up with a shortcut on a new route, your DOT should be kind enough to sign it as such.

NCDOT awarded a contract to resurface I-587 in Wilson County between NC-58 and the Greene County line. Bridge preservation work is also included in the contract.

Work can begin next month, and is expected to be finished by summer 2024.

I've posted photos I took last month of the new I-587 milepost exit numbers placed along US 264 West between I-95 and US 64, starting with those for US 264 Alt.:

The rest are at: https://malmeroads.net/ncfutints/fut587.html#futsigns

The complete set of photos taken along I-587 east of I-95 is also available at:

It appears NCDOT is getting around to adding I-587 shields to exits in Wilson on I-95. Screen captures of Google Maps Street View images taken in August show a new shield on the 1 mile advance (there was no 1/2 Mile) sign:

and one on the exit sign on I-95 North:

But no change on the C/D ramp signage:

^ I was in Goldsboro and Wilson early last month, and there still wasn't any I-587 shields on the signs along I-795 northbound approaching I-587/US-264.

Noticed at the end of April, there was some work to update signage along 587 near Wilson.

Driving yesterday, I saw some of what that looked like.

Going north on I-795, this is the signage for the interchange with US-301, now updated to include I-587:

Personally I hope DOT can continue to remove the US-264 concurrence once it's compliant West of I-95. The old sign is still visible on Street View.

However, plenty of the other signage still references just 264:

That's so interesting. I never come from the south, but always approach this intersection from I-95 southbound. The old signs are still up on the southbound side, but they've installed the posts for the new signs and just had them there behind the current sign for months. Weird to only update on side like that. 🤷🏻♂️

Updating signage takes time. Eventually, Interstate 587 will be fully signposted, even along the segment west of Interstate 95 (once the US 64 corridor is upgraded to Interstate 87 through the existing 64/264 freeway split).

I didn't even catch that! 🤦🏻♂️ It was correct on the old sign with no direction (since you can access N or S), but it's definitely not East!

The slow sign updates continue. Driving through this weekend, saw that Exit 32 has been updated from just an Alternate US-264 sign to one for US-264 East and US-264 Alt [West] to reflect the rerouting of 264 off of 587 east of the interchange.

Alas, the last few times I've come up I-795, US-301 "East" remains.

Some new signage has been added on I-95 S. You can see a mix of old and new signage approaching Exit 119. Sorry for the less than great quality, but these pictures from dash cam are better than what my phone was able to do...

This is the first sign right after the ramp from 264A. You can see the old sign sans 587 in the foreground and new sign in the distance:

Here is that newer sign:

They even managed to update the overhead signs! Of course both 587 and 795 end at 95, so the 119B signage is correct for now, but eventually 587 will continue west:

Here's a video if you want to see the signs in sequence:

Hopefully I'll drive through with some daylight at some point and get some better images.

No more 301 East!

Although, the "East" is still there if you look hard enough!

Signing US 301 as East/West made as much sense as signing Interstate 587 North/South.

Here's a few pictures from my recent drive through between Greenville and I-95 going westbound.

All of the white directional banners have been fully replaced with the proper blue banners, at least on the mainline. I do not know about the individual approaches.

It looks like all the conversion from US-264 is finally complete. Most of US-264 has been re-routed along the former 2 lane road, and most of the highway is solely signed as I-587. No references to US-264 except around Wilson where it rejoins. I imagine it will be routed back through Wilson once it is complete to US-64 / Future I-87.

My only complaint - no mention of Raleigh at all from Greenville until you reach Wilson. Not even on mileage signs. The control city needs to be changed from Wilson to Raleigh. Raleigh and Greenville are a mere 70 miles apart. Wilson is a city of 48,000 and the Raleigh-Durham region is a metro of 1.5 million, the city of Raleigh 500,000 alone.

problem is that Wilson is the intersection of 587 with 95 and 795. Wilson is playing the part of Benson and will be cemented in NC lore as the control city for 587's midpoint.

You can keep Wilson, that's fine. But at least mention Raleigh heading out of Greenville as well, and on mileage signs.
