Title: Jacksonville Road Meet-February 26, 2022
Post by: kevinb1994 on September 01, 2018, 02:44:57 AM
Meet lunch location-slated for the Ď60s-Ď70s era Blue Boy Sandwich Shop location at 6514 Norwood Avenue (SR 117), Jacksonville, FL 32208 at 11:30 A.M.

Post-meet dinner location-slated for the original (1949) Bonoís Pit Bar-B-Q location at 4907 Beach Boulevard (US 90), Jacksonville, FL 32207 (exact time TBD).

Beach Boulevard was built westward from Shetter Avenue and Third Street (aka Pre-1945 FL 140, which was renumbered as SR 1 during the 1945 renumbering, only to be renumbered again the following year as SR A1A in order to avoid confusion with US 1) in Jacksonville Beach to the old post-Civil War Hogan Road (which ran from Hendricks Point in South Jacksonville towards Saint Augustine) between 1937 and 1949 (construction was suspended between fall 1941 and 1945 due to World War II), was originally legislated as SR 376, was built on the right-of-way of the Florida East Coast Railwayís Mayport Branch (also known as, and originally built as, the Jacksonville and Atlantic Railroad) to relieve traffic on parallel Atlantic Boulevard (originally legislated as SR 140), and was finally dedicated on December 17, 1949, along with the original B.B. McCormick Bridge (which was a four-lane drawbridge, replaced in 2009 by a two-span, six-lane fixed bridge) over the Intracoastal Waterway.

Stop #2: Race Track Road Connector and Interchange at SR 9B (I-795) (this connector is actually called Peyton Parkway, presumably named after the same Peyton family that founded Gate Petroleum in 1960, and will eventually connect with a massive development area off of CR 210 and Race Track Road to the west of US 1-FL 5-Philips Highway)

Stop #3: Saint Johnís Parkway stub-end south of CR 210 (current plans call for Saint Johnís Parkway to extend all the way down to CR 208 to the west of the Saint Augustine (Premium) Outlets, with a spur/connector to SR 16 and SR 16A)

On the way from Stop #3 towards Stop #4, there is a (at least partially) graded ROW north of the CR 210 intersection with Greenbriar Road; this is where CR 210 turns to the south in order to head towards the intersection with SR 16A and Longleaf Pine Parkway. The ROW heads north from this intersection towards the intersection of Longleaf Pine Parkway and Veterans Parkway (this ROW may/may not still be planned as part of Veterans Parkway, but I couldnít find anything pertaining to this ROW, so the project may very well be dead in the water now).

Stop #4: SR 16 1963 Shands Bridge and 1929 Shands Bridge Piers (current plans call for a replacement bridge in order for the SR 23 First Coast Expressway to cross the Saint Johnís River without a major bottleneck and connect with I-95 at or near SR 9B aka I-795 in Saint Johnís County; this construction won't happen until 2023, which could mean another area road meet or mini meet-stay tuned)-there are historical information marker signs on both sides of the SR 16 1963 Shands Bridge, with at least one of them detailing about naturalist William Bartram, son of naturalist John Bartram of Bartramís Garden (1728, Kingsessing, Philadelphia) fame, who explored the Saint Johnís River in 1774 (after failing as a planter at Picolata, a former fort location at the intersection of CR 13 and CR 208, seven years earlier in 1767) after initially landing at Amelia Island. In case yíall were wondering who Shands was, his name was William Augustine Shands, was born somewhere in Alachua County in 1889, served as a Democratic member of the Florida Senate from 1940 to 1958 where he advocated for the establishment of a state medical college and teaching hospital, and died down in Gainesville in 1973. (Note: Hurricane Matthew destroyed a portion of the 1929 Shands Bridge Pier on the Clay County/Green Cove Springs side of the Saint Johnís River during the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season)

Optional: Depending on whether or not the entire initial stretch of the SR 23 First Coast Expressway toll road is open by the time of the mini meet, we will attempt to drive it (this toll road will eventually cross the Saint Johnís River on a replacement of the SR 16 Shands Bridge and connect with I-95 at or near SR 9B aka I-795 in Saint Johnís County; there is also discussion of another extension serving the Northside of Jacksonville and Nassau County). If it isnít completely open by then, I will drop it from the iteniary. Also, we may check out construction of the second stretch between SR 21 Blanding Boulevard and the SR 16 Shands Bridge if FDOT has started construction on it before the road meet is held (which is somewhat likely).

Stop #7: US 1-US 90-SR 5-SR 10 1941 Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville (we will park under the bridge on the Downtown-Northbank side next to the Jacksonville Landing festival marketplace, where there was a notorious mass shooting on August 26, 2018 at approximately 1:30 p.m EDT-current plans call for the Jacksonville Landing to be eventually torn down and replaced with a massive city riverfront-waterfront park)

This road meet will be held on February 23rd 2019. Facebook event is up and running: https://www.facebook.com/events/286403948879827/?ti=icl

A rough draft of the iteniary can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-4tiXlI4CebKzowIXKbTcz9tPf6podhIxH_NzufS6oY

As a ďsiteĒ for a meet Iíd be up for anything in Florida in the winter months. BTW no old Camp Johnston Brick Road off of US 17 in Yukon...itís right near the Ortega River Drawbridge.

I would be game for anything in the Jacksonville area.  I am planning to go to Marco Island in March, but I have some PTO to use before the end of January.

I was in Jacksonville for my cousin's wedding earlier this year and really enjoyed it - it's definitely a city with lots of potential for a meet, and I'd love to explore it further someday.  That said, I'm not sure if a return to Florida in the next year or two is where I'd direct my travels.  It's a 2-3 day drive (depending on what I want to clinch on the way - especially since any return to the peninsula will likely include a run through Orlando and Tampa, those being the only places in the peninsula save for I-10 where I have unclinched interstate mileage) for me each way, much of it on mileage I've already clinched, so I think I'd rather explore other areas in the meantime and revisit Florida later.

I'd be very interested in a Jacksonville meet if the timing is right for me. However, there are a lot of other ideas that are being discussed for road meets and I know I can't attend all of them. LOL

I have to consider this a low probability despite the fact that JAX is the location of my remaining Interstate mileage (I-10 to Lake City (I-75)), the beltway and the future spur).  I just spent a week in Florida this year and nabbed all the other Interstates + the Overseas Hwy.

Looks like this road meet will be hosted on February 26th 2022. As for a place to meet for dinner, I have decided on the original location of Bonoís Pit Bar-B-Q, 4907 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville.

Looks like this road meet will be hosted in January or February. As of a place to meet for lunch, thereís multiple Metro Diner locations in the area, in addition to the Deerwood Diner.

Pick one you like and think is unique to Jacksonville.  Part of a road meet is introducing people to something local if you can.

I’ve decided on the Maple Street Biscuit Company location at Point Meadows Drive off Baymeadows Road. It’s right down the road from my house and AFAIK we’ve eaten there and taken home food from there once. Safe Harbor Seafood Restaurant’s Jacksonville Beach location is located on 2nd Ave N off Beach Boulevard, but it is so popular that lines are frequent and it can get crowded/noisy.

Ever consider Joseph's Pizza (http://josephspizza.com/) (old name was Joseph's Italian Restaurant when I last visited Jax)?  Was also going to suggest Nero’s Italian Cafe in Arlington, but I just discovered they are no more.  Always liked their all-you-could-eat Spaghetti special when I was in town. :/

Weíve never had Josephís Pizza (didnít know it has been around since 1956, making it the oldest pizza joint in the area), as we have a NY-style pizza place down the road from our house, TonyDís New York Pizza & Restaurant, in addition to a Marcoís Pizza location opening soon also down the road from our house. Across from TonyDís is Rennaís Pizza which we tried once but havenít tried since. Too bad about Neroís being closed since August 30th, 2016, though.

Yeah, I'd recommend trying out Joseph's, especially their lunch specials.  If you go to the Main Street location, it's a little cramped, but it's the original location, and usually is the better of the two.

Thanks for the suggestion. Anyway, Iíve decided to move the road meet dinner location to the original location of Bonoís Pit Bar-B-Q, 4907 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville. We will likely have the meet group photo taken at the SR 202 Butler Boulevard/JTB Kernan Boulevard exit, where Kernan has a stub end directly south of the interchange (current plans call for it to connect with Baymeadows Road East and Gate Parkway).

I don't see February 30th.

I don't travel much on weekends nor go to roadmeets (weekends are for my family), but I can vouch for MOJOs...a great choice!

I've been to the Gainesville and Ocala locations, and it's great food and service. Try the burnt ends!

I will keep the poll open for another week or so as only one person voted in the updated poll. The first Saturday in February may work out, but weíll see. Also, the dinner location has been changed once again to the original location of Bonoís Pit Bar-B-Q, open since 1949. Weíve been to the Saint Johnís Town Center location on Gate Parkway, the original location is on Beach Boulevard near the Hart Bridge Expressway interchange (which obviously wasnít there when the restaurant opened back in the day).

Looks like we have a tied poll again; I will eliminate the 23rd of February from the poll if no one ends up voting for it by tomorrow at the latest. EDIT: we have a three-way tie for the poll again! I guess I will leave the poll open for now until we have a tie-breaker. How does Sunday sound for having the poll end/close?

Sundays are usually pretty bad days for a meet due to people's travel plans.

I'm for sure out in Florida January the 13th to the 19th if anyone happens to be in the area or wants to do something adhoc.  I'm looking at focusing on some road related stuff primarily in Tampa and Orlando but I'll probably swing up to Jacksonville for a day.

What's the difference between a "meet" and a "mini meet"?

Always felt a mini meet was much more spontaneous and geared more toward people already local to the meet area, which this would not fall under.

Good.  I just invited a fuckload of people on Facebook.  Thinking about making the trip myself as I haven't been to Jacksonville but once, and then just passing through.
Title: Re: Jacksonville Mini Meet-February 23rd 2019
Post by: Alps on October 28, 2018, 12:37:19 AM
A "mini meet" tends to focus on one particular site, maybe two at most, and is less formal, less organized, etc. The last mini meet I held was years ago, to walk on the then-unopened US 1/9 Truck overpass when it was already snow covered. Obviously that's not the foundation for a great meet, but several people came out just to share lunch and check it out in person. The whole thing took 4 hours, meal included. Nowadays, you can't really predict what happens - one St. Louis meet became huge while they were typically annual or biennial affairs with modest participation otherwise.

Just an FYI that lunch is now scheduled to be held at the Blue Boy Sandwich Shop on SR 117-Norwood Avenue due to its proximity to I-95. Dinner will now be scheduled to be held at the former lunch location (the original Bonoís Pit Bar-B-Q location on US 90-Beach Boulevard).

Also an FYI that the meet group photo site has been moved to the Jacksonville Landing in honor of the mass shooting that took place there earlier this year. Current plans call for the facility to be torn down and replaced with a riverfront-waterfront park, a much-needed addition to a downtown that doesnít really have much park space, if at all.

So weíre almost about a month away from this meet, but thereís just one confirmed attendee so far (other than me, being the host, of course ;)), and this has been of concern for me and my dad, whoís been sort of trying to help out as this is the first meet iíve tried to arrange. I will give a little more time (one more week, on the 23rd), until I should decide whether or not to call this meet off for now (until next year, maybe) and replace it with a different meet I have in the pipeline.

I probably won't know until a week or two before. Leaning towards Yes, but have to see how the finances fall.

The first meet I ever attended had only three participants. The last meet I hosted only had five people, including me.

As for me, I'd love to be able to come. It would give me the chance to pick up new counties in Georgia and possibly clinch I-75 there (we took I-475 on a family trip when I was a kid), but finances, leave time issues, and vehicle worries all preclude my being able to come. Maybe some of the Florida or southeastern US contingent will commit in the next little bit.

Thatís pretty much what Gene V. (who just said within the past day or two that heís officially gotten the time to attend my meet next month) said in his comment/reply post on the FB event page for this meet.

I got jwolfer interested in my meet, tried inviting him and event sent him a friend request on FB but havenít heard back from him on whether or not heíll be there. Someone who was previously interested forgot about my meet until it was too late to take off time for my meet, so heís no longer able to attend my meet.

Gene only had 3 people at his meet the first day (me, him, "Alternate 71") and just two the second day. The timing just didn't work for a lot of people.

Yeah but since I have no prior meet hosting exprerience I donít have anything to base it off of.

Plus my dad had a recent work-related accident and heís better now but still recovering from it. Also, my mom and sister just came back from a trip to Taiwan and Korea via Houstonís George Bush Intercontinental Airport which is where they met up and later split up on the way to and from EWR and JAX.

Yeah, I was part of one in very wet conditions, Port Huron 2012.  I think we sheltered under a porch canopy while looking at the Blue Water Bridges.

Grade school?  Your age shows up as 24.  You'd have been 18 and a senior in high school, maybe just after graduation, I would think.

Well, it would depend on when in 2012 the Port Huron Meet was held, but the 202 Parkway Meet wasn't held until late 2012 (December), and I had turned 18 a couple months or so prior (October 11th) during my senior year of high school (Class of Ď13, but I didnít get my real diploma until the 2015-2016 school year was over due to being in a post-secondary program with community college and job-related options). I was actually held back a year in the first grade due to reasons I donít really recall all that well, other than it not being a good fit overall at first.

Yeah I know, but cancelling this meet wouldnít sit well with me or those traveling to the now-postponed meet, and theyíd best to sit tight and not complain too much about it. Family, health, personal, scientific, and travel/vacation reasons came into play when deciding to postpone this meet. My dad had recently suffered a workplace-related injury and is better now but could use the extra time. My mom and sister just came back from Taiwan and Korea via Houstonís George Bush Intercontinental Airport where they met up and later split up on the way to and from EWR and JAX. Currently the weather forecast for this Saturday are not really favorable for this meet to be held in rainy and wet conditions.

I know weíre now less than a week away from the meet now, but unfortunately the weather forecast looks less than favorable now. Gonna postpone the meet until later this year instead of canceling it outright.

What's your weather forecast telling you? Weather Channel has this Saturday as partly cloudy, 20% chance of precipitation, highs in the low 80s. If that's not good enough, when will it ever be?

As far as your other difficulties, we had a meet go on as scheduled even when the host couldn't make it due to his own serious medical problems. People who wanted to attend on the original date did so, with alternate hosting arrangements (I didn't attend, so I don't remember what the plan B was). When the host was once more up to hosting, he set a second meet date.

As someone with some experience with organizing beach trips, one thing you learn quickly is to consult multiple weather forecasts, including the most official ones (like NOAA), before making any schedule change decisions. And also that when rescheduling an event to chase better weather, your new date will often as not end up worse than the old one.

I have multiple schedule conflicts for this Saturday, so I wasn't set on attending the meet as originally scheduled.

Well I donít always rely on multiple weather forecasts as they tend to dig too far into the future. I like a handful (five-day) of days in a weather forecast. Plus itís not real science. Sometimes I go by gut instinct(s).

Yeah Iím not surprised, as other roadgeeks werenít able to attend either.

FWIW, I consult multiple sources since there is some margin of error with each one.  One forecast is calling for sleet/freezing rain here tomorrow. Another says simply rain. To me at least, it means keep an eye on things. If both said freezing rain, I'd be running for the bread and milk.  YMMV.

Yeah thatís what oscar just mentioned. To be honest I donít really watch TV much nor keep any weather apps on my tablet. The latter just drains my battery life and Iím not much of a TV person besides what goes on behind the scenes at television stations and who owns and operates them. Iíve decided to post a new poll for this meet; this time I need to know if this fall is a good time to postpone it to or further back until early 2021 or early 2022.

Isn't your late October/early November window within Florida's hurricane season?

I remember a meet we had in Birmingham in early October 2016 was indirectly affected by evacuations from a hurricane that hit the coast in Florida and points north. Hotels even as far inland as northern Alabama were jammed with evacuees, so people who hadn't booked in advance had trouble finding rooms.

Yes, which is why I decided to punt the meet into Early 2022.

Respectfully, work on your earliest meet first and get a feel for how it works. Then you can work on subsequent meets as they occur. I know you want everything just right, but this far in advance, you're going to drive yourself crazy.

That's probably a reference to my New River Gorge meet a couple of years ago. I actually didn't do another meet there; but I had published the itinerary far enough in advance that everyone who was coming knew the routing and could plan accordingly. Plus, I knew a few days in advance that I wasn't going to be able to make it. I have, however, attended meets where the host bailed the day of the meet, and attendees and a last-minute-substitute host had to scramble to make things go somewhat as planned.

As far as weather goes, Froggie hosted a meet in Slidell, La., with a hurricane headed for the Gulf coast. Since the landfall wasn't going to be for a couple of days after the meet, it went on as scheduled. I remember he floated the idea of canceling, but I was already en route when he did so and said I didn't mind coming on down since I already had the trip planned.

Cody's Chattanooga meet was indeed on a rainy day. One of the Columbus meets about 15 or so years ago was marked by really strong thunderstorms.

I'm not sure I understand why the "my relatives split up in Houston on their return trip" factor would play a role in canceling the meet.

That sounded like the Dayton Road Meet in 2012, Sandor ended up leading that one

Yes that was hands down the wettest road meet I was ever at

As for my meet hosting experience, my April 2016 road meet went well despite a surprise mid April snow storm that did cause one meet attendee to back out but overall, it cleared up and was just cloudy the rest of the day (and cold for mid April) as for my up and coming Memphis meet, giving the time of the year in the mid south, who knows we could be storm chasing while on our tour for all I know, you just have to watch the weather closely but don't "panic" if the weather changes just slightly, just go with the flow and hope for the best

Yeah, that was a good meet, if a bit chilly.  The unmarked electric cow fences on the other hand...

Thatís just something I included in my explanation as that was in the last part of their trip. Not a major factor, but still something I had in mind when canceling the meet.

I feel bad for Gene who made all the arrangements to travel from multiple states away to attend this meet and it ended up getting cancelled at almost the last minute. I'm just concerned that people will be leery to commit to attending a meet that you might host in the future based on this last-minute cancellation. The farther that attendees are coming from, the more arrangements they have to make in terms of booking hotel rooms, putting in time-off requests from work, and so on. Just something to think about for the future.  :spin:

My parents suggested that I cancel this meet primarily due to the fact that I hadnít readied the iteniary in time for the meet.

I will be honest, I feel bad for him too, I already have one person committed for my meet who is flying in from the northeast and a handful that are driving 8+ hours so in my case the show is going on weather it is beautiful sunny weather or we could be dodging tornadic storms (it is the mid south in mid April) as for itinerary I have a "rough" itinerary set up but plan to have a more concrete one in the next couple weeks after I do some scouting. Just giving you some advise Kev  ;-)

I kept having to make edits to the itinerary so that it would be as interesting as possible but I didnít get to finish it in time.
