Title: what is the longest you held it in while on the road?
Post by: place-saint-henri on January 05, 2015, 01:08:15 PM
 :bigass:

We all know how great it feels to be out on the open road! But what is even better is the feeling of successfully relieving yourself while making great distances while out on the road!

so, road-geeks what is your record for holding off "doing your business" on the road? be sure to specify where!

My top two:

1. New Baltimore Rest Area on the NYS Thruway 2011. I made a three logger clogger (Ill leave it up to your imagination to figure it out) after holding it in since the Tappan Zee Bridge!

2. Maryland House, I-95, 2005. After eating two cinnabuns a few hours earlier at a NJ Turnpike rest stop (Thomas Edison) I had a great need to relieve myself by time I had gotten into Maryland, and well the rest is history!

3. Mallorytown ON-ROUTE, Highway 401 in Mallorytown, Ontario (2010). I think I set a personal record for liquid output at this one. Held it in from leaving Montreal until almost in Kingston.

Bonus points if you hold it in across state or provincial lines!

Fontana, CA to Tucson, AZ and back. I ate Carl's Jr on Saturday morning and it didn't exit my system until Sunday night. I can already see this being a really fucked up thread.

Whoa. Two days??? I assumed bad stuff might happen after not using the bathroom at all for just 1 whole day, but how long is it possible to hold it?? Guess I was wrong, but 2 days can't feel good at all!  :wow:

It's not that bad lol, well for me it wasn't. I only ate once and Idk why but if I'm not home, I never have the urge to use the bathroom.

#1: 2 hours this past October heading to Minneapolis. Forgot about the big I-94 construction
#2: 6 hours, didn't really need to go when we left Chicago for Detroit. I regretted that decision when we reached Canada

No idea, but on the way south for Christmas last month I made a point of eating foods that would not make one have to leave a load in the hopes I wouldn't have to use a fast food/gas station/rest area crapper. Must have done the job because I went a day and a half (the entire drive) without having to sit on the toilet, though coffee and soda did lead to several toilet stops anyway.

I used to get annoyed if I had to stop to take a leak less than 250 miles from home,* but nowadays when we hit the road early I'd rather bring a cup of coffee with me, so sooner or later I'm going to have to make a stop.

The part about "bonus points if you hold it in across state or provincial lines" isn't really all that remarkable if you live where I do....it's six miles to the Maryland state line and, if you continue up I-95 the whole way, it's only 109 miles further to Delaware (and less to Pennsylvania). Neither of those distances are any challenge to make without having to use the john. I've routinely made it from home to Brooklyn without having to stop for any reason other than paying tolls (this was back in the pre—E-ZPass days when there was also less traffic on the road).

*"Had to" denoting that if I stop to eat, say if I leave home early in the morning without breakfast and I stop two hours into the trip to eat something, I will normally make a toilet stop at the same time even if it doesn't feel like I need to go.

A few years ago, I went up to Indianapolis for an event with some friends. We were going to meet up with a person at a restaurant there. On the way up, we stopped at a Wendy's near Cincinnati. I downed a Coke, but I assumed I could hold it in until we got to Indy.

By the time we got to I-465 though, my bladder was beginning to churn. Then, when we got on I-465, traffic was stopped. Completely. And I had to go. Bad. It must have taken an extra hour to get to the restaurant on the north side of town.

When I finally got there, I just darted past the person we were there to meet and rushed to the restroom.

Then later there was the trip to Colorado. On the last day of the trip, through Illinois and Indiana, I had to stop to pee about once every 5 minutes. For no apparent reason. At one stop, I was leaving the restroom, then I needed to pee a second time.

Also, there was a trip a few years ago with my brother in rural Tennessee. We had to use his GPS to find a detour to the nearest gas station, which was miles away. At least once or twice, the gas station had no restrooms - forcing us to find yet another station.

Nowadays, I wouldn't put up with that. When you gotta go, you gotta go.

Also, I have been on week-long trips where I didn't do a Number Two the whole time.

Well, I either don't tend to drink or eat a lot, or I have a great system that allows me to hold it off longer than most people (most days I don't use the bathroom once at university over the 7-8 hours I'm away from home. The university bathrooms stink too much anyway  :D)

But when I was a kid (2006) my family and I took a road trip from Winnipeg to Humboldt Sask to visit some family. I don't believe I managed to use a bathroom until we crossed the Sask-Man border. It's not that big of a deal now, but back then, it was a pretty tough wait.

Sacramento to LA in one sitting. Rolled out of bed, straight into my car and straight to LA. No drinks, no food, just me and the car. Definitely a personal best.

Second best was Saint Louis to Joliet, Il. Ate a big breakfast in STL and then headed out towards Chicago. Got stuck in a traffic jam along I-55 while they were doing bridge repair. Had to relieve myself along a freeway ramp.

I remember seeing someone take a dump along I-8 in Arizona. It was in front of a picnic stop.

Impressive! Brave to do that in front of passerby's. I don't like dumping in a full restroom, let alone on the side of a busy freeway.

The time I was stricken and had to take a dump on the side of the road, I hid as best I could behind a bridge abutment. Bigger problem was having to use various napkins and tissues I was able to scrounge out of the car in lieu of TP since I had none of the latter with me. Napkins and tissues are not so good for wiping up the runs.

Most contrary example of topic:

Helped a friend move from eastern Iowa to New Jersey many years ago.  First day he drove.  He stopped at EVERY rest area, peed and drank another can of pop.  I was about to lose my mind, as all these delays were taking forever.

Second day, I drove, we did not stop at that first rest area, he had no pop, and we did not stop.

He was jonesing for caffeine so bad by the late afternoon I thought he was going to stab me in the throat with a pencil.

Apparently, when I was a really young kid, I made it all the way from CT to outside of Bridgton.  I've made it from my house in CT to Bordentown, NJ as an adult. Worst experience had to be from Dover to Rehoboth Beach, DE.  I swear they put a diuretic in the soda fountains at McDonald's.  Past Milford, no bathrooms for miles on DE 1.  Barely made it to the Rehoboth outlets.  Run to the food court, right past Grotto Pizza to the men's room.  3-4 minutes straight.

Agree, but there are a lot of strange statistics out there; that's why I like this forum.

As far as #2 I usually go 2 or 3 times/day at home but on the road once every day or two.  However, my wife and daughter go days when at home without a good crap so they may be champs on the road.

As far as #1 I know I went 400 miles recently without pain, so about 6hrs, not bad for an old fart.  I am sure when I was young I went much longer. Of course back then I could put a stream across a four lane highway.

When I use public restrooms, I do not touch the johnnypot. Ever. They're filthy.

I sure hope you don't turn off the faucet.  After you wash your hands, you go putting them right back where all those peepee-soiled fingers also touched, never mind the gobs of feces lurking on them.  Leave it running for some other sucker to turn off!

Heh. I've heard women say they "hover" over a public toilet. I've never been any good at trying to do that. I guess it makes sense the women would have more practice at doing that.....

frontal activity?  probably about 4 hours from first urge to relief.  nowadays I'd just stop by the side of the road and get that taken care of.

as for simply not having to go?  I've gone all day without going.  if I sweat enough, I won't need to eliminate my liquids as often in other forms.

with regard to rearal activity: probably several days by virtue of not needing to go.

I've seen the results.  In college, I was a janitor for about a year or so, and had to clean the bathrooms on weekends.  The men's room toilets were usually fairly clean.  The floor under the urinals was a different story.  The women's room toilets had splatter all over them.  Hovering is a horrible idea.  If you're that damn worried, use some toilet paper on the seat.

My longest feat was holding it across the state of Arkansas. I stopped in Alma, AR on the way back home from Fayetteville. I didn't stop to use the restroom again until I got to the east side of Memphis on US 72 at the TN/MS state line.

And as for number two, I don't mind gas stations as long as they have flush valves. I don't want to stop up the toilet. Truck stops are awesome for that, usually.

Heh. The grossest toilet I ever experienced was at the Rasta Bar (also known as Marley's) on Cozumel (it's on the inland side of the road here: https://www.google.com/maps/@20.2936525,-86.9572606,18z ). You go in the men's room and there's a booth with a standard American-style toilet....with no toilet seat. There's a long broomstick hanging from the wall, a big hook on the back of the door, a wastebasket next to the toilet, and a huge rain bucket outside with a pail of water.

The broomstick was for balance while you hovered over the bowl due to the lack of a seat. The hook was for hanging your pants and underwear to avoid splatter. The wastebasket was for disposing of the TP (I felt sorry for the guy who had to empty it after my visit) and the rain bucket was for getting a pail of water to dump down the bowl to flush it (and for rinsing your hands after you had finished up).

I wish I'd taken a picture.

And I have a unique way of opening the door when I leave the restroom. I open it with my pinky finger, and touch only the top part of the handle, which nobody else touches.

When I was little (4th grade), we had a class trip to... some Native American reserve or camp or something to that nature. Regardless, we were there for about 6 hours; the bus ride to-and-from was about an hour. The only restrooms they had were porta-potties, and the stench from those things was enough to dissuade me from using them. During that trip, I had a handful of sodas, and by the time we were about to leave, I really had to go. I thought I would be fine until we got back to the school. On the way back, what happens? We hit freaking traffic. So I had to wait an extra 40 minutes. I did the whole "cover your balls" thing to hold it in, and I held it in somehow until we got back to the school. The moment those doors opened, I ran like all hell into the bathroom and released a 40 seconds-or-so stream.

But that's not even "on the road", that's just the longest I held it in. I don't have long enough trips to actually be forced to use a public rest area.

I'm talking about a Number Two.

When I went to the most recent Oktoberfest in Cincinnati, the portable restrooms were an absolute mess. People always throw things like phone books and pants in the toilets there, but this time, there just weren't enough restrooms.

And after eating those really good pretzels there, I really had to drop a deuce. But the line was too long for the bathrooms, and the bathrooms were so filthy I didn't want to use them anyway for a Number Two. So I traveled 20 minutes all the way back home just to go to the bathroom. By bike. And when you have to drop a deuce that badly, it's extremely difficult to ride a bike.

It turned out to be a logger clogger.

May be another thread but the weirdest for me was in France, we called them bomb sights as you sort of squatted over a hole in the floor. Another in Paris was these sort of shower stall cubicles on the street. A person would go in there and you might say it flowed down the side of the street and into the sewer.  This was in the late 60s so things may have changed.

Then also in the late 60s the Munich beer hall restrooms we just pissed on the wall and it ran down the wall to a tiled ditch. At times while hosing down the wall a frau would come in and clean up right next to you.

In Mexico similar experience as Bandit there were toilets without seats or tanks behind a curtain.  You had to carry a bucket of water in with you to flush the solids but toilet paper, if used, would not flush just stop up the toilet.

A related subject might be toilet paper.  When I lived in Europe the toilet paper was almost like sand paper.  In London it was like wax paper and only one square at a time.  I experienced a blow out so that was fun.  I had to save a piece of this with City of Westminster printed on each square.

All of these stories remind me of my school. The inside the of the toilet is clogged, the paper is everywhere, the walls are literally covered in shit, and it smells like cheap weed. The last one doesn't have to do with this but might as well add it in.

Ugh, I rarely hover over a toilet bowl. More trouble than it's worth. If some asshole left pee on the seat before me, I wipe it up with TP, put some antibacterial sanitizer on some TP and wipe again, then sit down and go.

The one exception was at a bathroom in the NYC subway...that was seriously the dirtiest bathroom I had ever seen. Smelled like piss, had random underwear on the floor...but I really needed to go. I hovered, wiped myself with a napkin out of my purse, used another napkin to flush the toilet. Used hand sanitizer on hands.

That entire day was probably the longest I had held it in continuously because up in NYC, there just aren't many public restrooms. That entire day was...hold as long as possible, oh thank God a McDonalds, hold as long as possible, oh good our lunch spot has a toilet, hold as long as possible, omg diarrhea from the restaurant is setting in, please lord let there be a bathroom somewhere, oh good there's one in brooklyn bridge park, oh crap its on the other side, no don't crap you can't you don't own any other pants, finally thank god I can go for the next forever. Satisfied for now. Hold as long as possible, oh look there's one in the subway station at our stop, dear god no this is disgusting but I must go...hover and run.

Public bathrooms need to be signed at least as well as public parking.

McDonald's usually has good bathrooms (relatively speaking). An exception is the one at Hyde Park Plaza in Cincinnati, where it's just a single seater. I tried using it a couple weeks ago when I went Roads Scholaring, but it was being monopolized.

I actually quite like their restrooms for doing number two. They have good flush valve toilets.

On my last meet, I scouted out places with good restrooms, and McDonalds won out at both break stops.

McDonald's restrooms are mostly terrible for me. Always dirty and tagged up.

Most McDonald's I've been in have only one toilet and two urinals.

Off-topic: am I the only one who pulls up one shorts leg and pees out the bottom?

My father does that. He's the only person I know who does.

So is this when I mention I've shared a porti-potty with my wife, or do I save that for another thread?  Usually people don't pick up on it when we go in.  When we leave...the more drunker the crowd is, the more interesting the responses are. Fun-Fun.

The one restaurant that excels in every area but their bathrooms: Texas Roadhouse - at least in the mens room.  Large restaurant. Always crowded.  And one urinal.  There should always be 2, in case one is broken, or one is in use, which happens often because the restaurant is, again, always crowded.

The cleanest restrooms that no one takes advantage of:  Hotels.  Stop at the front door, which is almost always covered, walk in (they have no idea if you're a guest or not), find bathroom usually somewhere near the lobby, take care of business, then leave.

I hate that McD's. Class warfare central. Both sides guilty.

Yeah I've stopped at a lot of McDs over the years to use the bathroom, and the vast majority have just one stall and either one or two urinals.

They also have those terrible old-school hand dryers. When I'm president my first order of business will be demanding xlerator hand dryers in every public restroom.

If you've ever worked in a loud enough environment to require hearing protection, Xlerator hand dryers should bring you right back.  In restrooms with the right acoustics, they're actually harmfully loud.  Their decibel rating, as far as I can tell, is based on the thing running on its own in a sound-dead room, minus hands.

I know, it's brief, but it seems a little dumb to me that slightly faster hand drying needs to be this loud.  World makes a very effective modern fast dryer that is far quieter.

I like the Dyson AirBlade, but I know it's expensive.

It's quite easy to hear the Xlerator through a closed heavyweight door and walls. Not viable for quiet workplaces, IMO.

The Airblade is a little awkward.  I feel like I'm playing Operation when I use it.

It is, slightly, but I still like it better than the Xlerator. For one thing, I can see the skin on the backs of my hands moving when I use the Xlerator.

But I love that effect! :) The loudness is a bit much, though. However, it can mask the sounds of other folks' bodily functions while in the restroom.

I gotta say the best restrooms I've been in are in In-n-Out, but I have accidentally entered the women's restroom accidentally several times.

OK, so this is a bit off topic, but this statement brought back an enjoyable memory about bathrooms...

On our first cruise, there was a dating game-type show where 3 couples were on stage - a newlywed couple, a couple married 10 years, and a 25 year anniversary couple.

I still remember this one question, and the newlywed's answers.

"Where was the oddest place you made whoopie?".

The guys were on stage.  The women were off in a private room.

The newlywed guy proudly said "The Taco-Bell Bathroom!!"  We, the audience, laugh hysterically.

After the other two men gave more sane answers, the women come back on stage.  The host asks the newlywed chick: "So, where's the oddest place you made whoopee?"

Her face turned so beet red, the room glowed.  She told the host "Oh my goodness - I can't answer that - my parents and my family are here!"

The host turns to the newlywed, puts her hand on her shoulder, and says "That's ok.  THEY ALREADY KNOW".

She very sheepishly says "The Taco-Bell Bathroom".

It was great.  Even better, thru the CCTV system they had on the ship, they played the show over, and over and over again.  Loved it!

I prefer paper towels to electric air-blown hand dryers.

If it isn't the Xcelerator or Dyson ones, then I prefer paper towels. The bacon blow dryers just don't cut it.

Lately I've been pooing each evening at the end of 'CHiPs', because of all the roads in that show. (Thinking of roads induces pooing.)

Good advise.  I will be using it in the future.

As long as it's during the day. Hotel's often have sliding doors that lock after midnight and you need a room key to open it. At the Marriott where I work, if you can't provide the front desk with information as to the room you are staying in, the hotel security escorts you from the premises. There is no security between 7 am and 5 pm, so during those hours, the lobby pisser is fair game.

Hold it?  Why?  Mike Watt made an instructional video 20 years ago, complete with disposal procedure.

The extra shake is important.
