Oh, by the way, great and relatively new "KY 68" route marker on KY 36 westbound approaching 68 heading out of Carlisle toward Millersburg. (Yes, I got a photo).

Kentucky and Indiana are working together to get the US 41 southbound Twin Bridge resurfaced, possibly in '16:

It's a needed repair job, as the deck is spotted with holes and patches ... and holes in patches ... and patches of patches.  Makes for a rough ride!!

KY is not alone, we have 4 digit SR#'s in NC too, we just don't sign them, per se. The difference is ours work more like county roads in that the numbers are reused in other counties on other roads. There are a few that do continue on from one county to another (SR-1004 is Brices Creek Rd in Craven County and becomes Island Creek Rd in Jones County, for example).

I've also seen them in Pennsylvania. They appear on the mile marker signs, in the same way the true signed routes do.
North Dakota uses 4 digit routes too.
So does Louisiana.

drove over it tonight going back home to Atlanta from central IL, i think the longest stretch without a patch is maybe 40 feet.

Wow, I've never heard of a modern rest area catching fire. They're all block and tile.

Arson is suspected. The state police arson unit and the state fire marshal's office are investigating.

What was odd is that about 12 hours later someone in Nashville climbed on top of a BGS on I-65 near Rosa Parks. It almost makes you wonder if those incidents are related.

Is there any timeline on extending the Cumberland Parkway east of US 27 in Somerset?

seicer

New 2016 plan is out: http://transportation.ky.gov/Program-Management/Documents/2016RecommendedProjectListing.pdf

--

The Interstate 66 project now being rebranded as a Hal Rogers Parkway extension around Somerset? It's become clear that the interstate won't be completed between Somerset and London, so it's interesting to see Hal Rogers Parkway pop up in Somerset, quite a ways west of London.

--

Completion of the Georgetown bypass is now set for 2020.

--

Finally, access management for US 31E between Louisville and Bardstown.

--

Interchange at US 62 (current southern end of bypass) at Maysville by 2020 and the extension of the bypass to KY 11/AA. It looks like this may be fully controlled with just interchanges.

--

  • There are also a lot of updates to the Mountain Parkway expansion project and the US 460 relocation project not snipped.
  • It also looks like there is planning studies to be funded for a Paducah bypass and a Bardstown western bypass.
  • Widening of Interstate 64 east from Winchester to US 60.
  • KY 40 relocation from Inez to Warfield - is this four lanes?
  • Completion of KY 52 from Wallace Mill Road to Interstate 75 at Duncannon Road.
  • Widening of KY 192, London's southern bypass, and addressing access management issues, from KY 1006 (Interstate 75 basically) to US 25.
  • Access management and widening on US 25E in Laurel and Knox counties. There are plans online somewhere at KYTC's site - it's pretty significant and removes a lot of the intrusions along the road.
  • Construction of the eastern Nicholasville bypass for US 27.
  • Construction of the US 62 bypass of Cynthia from US 27 east to US 62.
  • Completion of the US 68 Millersburg bypass in 2018.
  • Widening of US 60 in Boyd County to four lanes from KY 180 to Interstate 64.

The state named KY 80 as an extension of the Hal Rogers Parkway several months ago. Little green signs went up immediately and big green signs were installed by December.

Greenup pursues parkway expansion

"Greenup County is lobbying the state of Kentucky to fund an expansion of the Industrial Parkway corridor in light of the announcement by Braidy Industries to locate a major aluminum mill in the EastPark Industrial Center."

[...]

"Traffic counts provided by the Kentucky Department of Highways based on most recent available data show 6,226 vehicles per day on average run between I-64 and EastPark Drive, 25 percent being commercial trucks (counted 2014), 5,088 per day on average halfway between I-64 and U.S. 23 (counted 2015), and 4,373 on average on the parkway between U.S. 23 and Ky. 207 (counted 2016)."

bandit957

I'm guessing the aluminum mill won't last long. Most of Kentucky isn't growing these days. I actually read that Kentucky will probably lose an electoral vote after the 2020 census.
Might as well face it, pooing is cool

Central

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • Rebuilding of the congested two-lane SR 627 bridge over I-75 at Exit 95 (C 2021).

  • Rebuilding of the congested two-lane SR 627 bridge over I-75 at Exit 95 (C 2021).
  • New context-sensitive US 460 roadway (built upon the existing road, essentially) from Russell Cave Road east to the Paris bypass (C 2021).
  • Demolition of the Broadway Bridge (former US 421) over the Kentucky River in Frankfort (C 2019).
  • Rebuild SR 146 from New Castle at US 421 to Pendleton at SR 153 (C 2022).
  • Build the east Nicholasville bypass from KY 39 to KY 169 - phase 1A (C 2024).
  • Realign SR 52 from Wallace Mill Road to I-75 at Duncannon Road (C 2024).
  • Widen SR 53 to four-lanes from I-64 to US 60 in Shelbyville (C 2020).

  • Build a new south Campbellsville bypass as part of the SR 555/Heartland Parkway from SR 55 to SR 70 (C 2022).
  • Extend the Campbellsville bypass (SR 555/Heartland Parkway) to US 68 east of the city (U 2019).
  • Improve upon SR 55/Heartland Parkway from Campbellsville south to Taylor/Adair County (C 2020).

Lexington Area

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • Widen I-75 (and I-64) from the Brighton Rail Trail/former C&O Railroad just south of Man-o-War Blvd. north to the northern split of I-64 (C 2022).
  • Widen SR 4/New Circle Road in Lexington from US 421/Leestown Road to US 25/Georgetown Road (C 2024).
  • Widen SR 4/New Circle Road from US 25/Georgetown Road to Boardwalk, including interchange reconstruction at SR 922/Newtown Pike (C 2018).
  • Widen SR 4/New Circle Road from Trade Center Drive (end of existing six-lane near US 60/Winchester Road) to Woodhill Drive (the start of the freeway by US 25/Richmond Road) (D 2024).
  • Widen SR 4/New Circle Road from US 68/Harrodsburg Road to US 60/Versailles Road (D 2024).

Other

  • Widen SR 922/Newtown Pike from SR 4/New Circle Road to I-64/75 to six lanes (C 2020).
  • Widen Clays Mill Road from U68/Harrodsburg Road to SR 4/New Circle Road (C 2019).
  • Complete Polo Club Blvd. to SR 1927/Todds Road (C 2018) - aerial.
  • Widen SR 1927/Liberty Road from Grafton Mill Lane to SR 4/New Circle Road - completing the widening to three to five lanes between New Circle and Man-o-War (C 2024).
  • Rebuild US 150 from Bardstown north to Springfield (D 2020).

Louisville Area

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • Widen I-64 west to I-264 west ramp to two lanes and address weaving issues at the merge (C 2019).
  • Rebuild the I-64 and I-265 interchange (C 2020).
  • Widening of I-65 to eight lanes from SR 61 in Lebanon Junction to I-265 (D 2022).
  • Major work to improve the I-65 and I-264 interchange (D 2021).
  • Major work to improve the I-65 and I-265 interchange (P 2021).
  • Planning study for an outer-outer loop of Louisville from I-65 in Bullitt County to I-64 in Shelby County to I-71 in Oldham County. Seriously I-265 is still four-lanes in places, and the existing interchanges at the interstates could use some serious improvements that have been long delayed.
  • Add auxiliary lanes to I-71 from I-64 to Zorn Ave/Exit 2 - essentially becoming six lanes (C 2022).
  • Widen I-71 from Zorn Avenue/Exit 2 to I-265 (D 2022-23).
  • Widen I-71 to six lanes from I-265 to SR 329/Exit 14 (C 2019).
  • Widen I-71 to six lanes from SR 329/Exit 14 to SR 393/Exit 18 (C 2024)
  • Widen I-71 to six lanes from SR 393/Exit 18 to SR 53/Exit 22 (D 2023).
  • Widen I-71 to six lanes from SR 53/Exit 22 to SR 153/Exit 28 (D 2023).
  • Construct new I-71 interchange between SR 393 and SR 53 (C 2020).
  • Add collector/distributor lanes to ton south I-71 to I-265 (C 2019). I assume this means just squeezing the two through lanes into the median and making an extra lane to use as a C/D lane.
  • Widen I-264 to six lanes from Westport Road/SR 1447 to I-71, and rebuild the US 42/Exit 22 interchange as a SPUI (C 2024).
  • Widen I-265 from I-65 to US 31E/Exit 17 (D 2023).
  • Widen I-275 from US 31E to SR 155/Taylorsville Road (D 2023).
  • Widen I-265 between Taylorsville Road/SR 155/Exit 23 and I-71 - 11 miles (C 2022).

Other

  • Converting many downtown Louisville streets to two-way (C 2018).

Northern

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • New outer auxiliary lane on I-71/75 from SR 536 north to U42 (C 2024).
  • New interchange at I-275 and Graves Road - future Exit 7 (C 2022).
  • Study new bypass of I-275 from I-71 in Gallatin County to the AA Highway in Campbell County (P 2019).

Other

  • Widen US 25 from Winning Colors Drive in Richwood north to the NS Railroad crossing at SR 1829/Industrial Road in Devon (D 2023).
  • New road from SR 237 east to SR 842 and then to the Mall Road/I-75 interchange (D 2023). I suspect this will involve some considerable home demolitions as the path is getting built up.
  • Replace the SR 8 Licking River Bridge in Newport and Covington (C 2024).
  • Improve US 27 from SR 177 at Butler north to SR 154 at Fairlane (C 2020). The cost estimate of this makes me think this will be an improvement of the existing two-lane instead of a widening to four lanes.

Eastern

  • Rebuild the SR 244 viaduct in Russell to bridge over US 23 at the new Russell-Ironton Ohio River Bridge and connect to SR 750 and US 23 (C 2018).
  • Rebuild SR 207 from the SR 67/Industrial Parkway to SR 693 in Flatwoods (D 2024).
  • SR 67/Industrial Parkway improvements relating to the Braidy Industries aluminum plant at East Park (C 2021). Seeing as this is programmed for $19 million in construction dollars, this is probably the dualization of the road to four lanes from I-64 north for several miles and a bridge over the parkway at Braidy Industries.
  • Widen of US 60 to four- and five-lanes from I-64 at Rush/Exit 181 to SR 180 in Cannonsburg (C 2020).
  • Replacement of two 100-year-old truss bridges on SR 773 south of Grayson (C 2019). These were built for the Eastern Kentucky Railroad.
  • Relocate SR 7 from Sandy Hook north to Wrigley (D 2023).
  • Continue improvements on SR 82 in Estill County with the rebuilding of 4 miles from SR 89 to Hudson Mill Road (D 2023).
  • Continue improvements on SR 89 in Estill County going north from SR 1889 to the Clark County line/Red River (D 2021).
  • Finish the relocation of SR 680 at Grethel to Minnie - making for a nice east-west route between KY 80 and US 23 (C 2022).
  • Major upgrades to SR 15 fro Morton Blvd. (site of a lot of new development and the ARC Hospital) south to the SR 15 bypass of Hazard (C 2018). $48 million means perhaps an interchange at Morton or the bypass?
  • Rebuild SR 377 from SR 32 to SR 799 near Morehead (C 2024).

Western

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • Build a double crossover diamond interchange at I-24 and US 60 in Paducah (C 2019).
  • Rebuild Natcher Parkway and SR 69 interchange (Exit 50) (C 2021).
  • Sign the Natcher Parkway from I-65 in Bowling Green to Owensboro as a I-65 spur in 2019. $2.1 million to resign!
  • Improve the Purchase Parkway from Tennessee to Cardinal Road near Mayfield - including the SR 339 interchange in Wingo, as part of the I-69 project (P 2023-24).
  • Develop I-69 alignment from Henderson to Evansville (U 2022).
  • Modernizing the Natcher Parkway from I-65 in Bowling Green north to Owensboro.
  • Improve the US 231 interchange (Exit 36) with the Natcher Parkway (C 2021).

Other

  • Paint US 41 bridges over the Ohio River - and address other repairs (C 2022).
  • New Cairo Bridge for US 51/60 over the Ohio River (C 2023-24). This looks like it will be a $100 million+ project.
  • Widening of US 60 to four-lanes from Kevil west to the western reaches of La Center (P 2024).
  • Relocate US 60 east of the Tennessee River Bridge to Rudd-Spees Road - basically a bypass of Ledbetter east of Paducah (U 2021).
  • Widening of US 641 from Tennessee north to Murray, a distance of 7 miles (C 2018).
  • Build the Mayfield southern bypass (SR 80) from SR 303 to the Purchase Parkway (C 2022). This means it will tie into the original southern end of the US 45 bypass of Mayfield at the Purchase Parkway's Exit 22.
  • Widen to four lanes US 641 from US 62 at Eddyville to the new segment at Fredonia (C 2022).

Southern

Interstates, Expressways & Parkways

  • Widen I-75 to six-lanes from mile 55.6 to mile 60 at Mt. Vernon - nearly completing another gap - unless there is work ongoing north of Mt. Vernon (C 2018).
  • Widen I-75 from US 25E to Little Laurel River - essentially widening to six lanes from Corbin north to the weigh stations (C 2020).
  • Widen I-75 from SR 80 at London to KY 909 (C 2022) - completing a gap in a widened interstate.
  • Widen I-75 to EIGHT-lanes from mile 20 to US25E north of Corbin (C 2023).
  • Widen the Daniel Boo... Hal Rogers Parkway to four lanes from SR 30 to SR 192 in London (C 2024).
  • Rebuild the Daniel Boo... Hal Rogers Parkway to interstate standards from SR 192 to Clay County (D 2024).
  • Add a new interchange at the Cumberland Parkway and SR 910 at Windsor (Exit 70) (C 2018).

Other

  • Widen US 27 from SR 70 at Eubank to Education Way - not sure where is this (U 2022).
  • Relocation of US 127 from SR 3063/Old US 127 north to SR 1730/Mantown, a distance of 25 miles in Clinton and Russell counties. This is essentially the relocation of US127 from KY 90 Jamestown and includes a new bridge over Cumberland Lake - taking it off of the Wolf Creek Dam (C 2023). The bridge is a separate project (C 2919).
  • Widening of SR 461 from Buck Creek south to SR 80 - including a long needed interchange at SR 80 (C 2024).
  • Widen SR 461 from U150 to US 25 around Mt. Vernon (U 2023). There shouldn't have been intersections - especially with traffic lights, on those long grades.
  • Rebuild SR 30 from US 421 at Tyner to the Jackson County line (C 2019).
  • Rebuild SR 92 from SR 592 to the Whitley/McCreary County line - completing a modern route between US 27 and I-75 (C 2019).
  • "Surfacing only" for the east Tompkinsville bypass (C 2020).

I hope they address the existing interchange at 80/550 and 15.  When you travel north and in the right lane, lots of people end up stopping to make a sharp(?) right to get down to 80/550.  Can't tell you how many near misses I've had.  Maybe a longer turn lane would help...

Was supposed to go to bid yesterday. It was bid in December but the bids were rejected for being over estimates.

It will include both a grade-separated interchange at Morton Boulevard and a rebuild of the 80/550 interchange.

Nice - I am assuming a diamond interchange at Morton and a full four lanes on KY 15 with a much larger folded diamond at SR 550?

I'm not sure about the design for the 80/550 exit, but the interchange at Morton isn't a diamond. It's been awhile since I've seen the plans, but I'm pretty sure it's not a traditional diamond.

With regard to the cost of re-signing the Natcher as I-165, it's time for most of the signage to get replaced anyway, aside from some spot replacements that have been done in the last few years.  I need to get night pictures of some of the BGSes and the "Parkway Ends" sign at the Owensboro end. The oldest ones are getting to be in pretty sad shape.

Plus ... the exit numbers are likely to go back to what they were before the extension from 65 to 231 opened a few years ago.

Not necessarily -- I-165 could be a "double ended" spur like I-181 was in TN before replacement by I-26, which would keep the exit numbers as is.

Are there any plans to extend the Louie B. Nunn Cumberland Parkway east of US 27?

seicer

Nothing in the six-year program, although there are plans in the program for an interchange at SR 461 and a parkway-to-interstate conversion study from London to Manchester on the Daniel Boone Parkway. There was a study completed on an Interstate 66 alignment between Somerset and London, which I highly disagreed with - partly because much of it would be on new alignment through very ecologically sensitive areas.

hbelkins

They need to at least finish the northern Somerset bypass around to KY 80 on the east side of town.
